X-rays are generated by an X-ray tube and are used to detect broken bones, while radioactive isotopes are used in smoke detectors, food irradiation, medical treatments, pest control, archaeology, and radiation therapy uses ionizing radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors with external beams of x-rays, gamma rays, electrons or heavy ions. Isotopes have the same number of protons and electrons but different numbers of neutrons.
