Op elfjarige leeftijd ging De Ruyter naar zee. Uiteindelijk doorliep hij de meeste functies aan boord van koopvaardij- en kaperschepen en maakte hij daarna de overstap naar de marine.
De Ruyter had hart voor zijn personeel. Niet voor niets kreeg hij de koosnaam Bestevaer, dat wil zeggen grootvader. Hij kende de noden van zijn scheepsvolk. Hij had immers zelf jarenlang ‘voor de mast’ gevaren. Als een van de eerste erkende De Ruyter ook het primaat van de politiek. Aan de politieke partijschappen van die tijd, Oranjegezinden versus Staatsgezinden, nam hij weinig deel.
In dit college komen drie ‘portretten’ van De Ruyter aan de orde: de militair en vakman uit de praktijk, de people manager en de dienaar die het primaat van de politiek volgde.
Adri P. van vliet (1956) is sinds 2005 als hoofd van de afdeling Publieksinformatie en Collecties en plaatsvervangend directeur verbonden aan het Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie (Den Haag). Hiervoor was hij directeur van het Instituut voor Maritieme Historie van de Koninklijke Marine (Den Haag) en hoofd Externe Dienstverlening bij het toenmalige Rijksarchief in Noord-Brabant (’s-Hertogenbosch).
In 1994 promoveerde hij aan de Universiteit Leiden op de monografie Vissers en kapers. De zeevisserij vanuit het Maasmondgebied en de Duinkerker kapers (ca. 1580–1648). Hij publiceerde over archivistische en maritiem-historische onderwerpen, waaronder Marinekapiteins uit de achttiende eeuw. Een Zeeuws elftal (2000),’Operatie Watersnood’. De hulpverlening door de Koninklijke Marine en de Watersnoodramp van 1953 (2003), Vissers in oorlogstijd. De Zeeuwse zeevisserij in de jaren 1568–1648 (2003) en ‘Een vriendelijcke groetenisse’. Brieven van het thuisfront aan de vloot van De Ruyter (1664 / 1665) (2007).
