Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
3. Magazine header- I used the Kerrang style header above the
masthead to add more information as Kerrang uses it to add any
competitions or any exclusive information for the double page
spread that doesn't fit below. I decided to use it to add any offers
from my magazine and to mention the 'Warped Tour' which is a big
event for the alternative artists and audience so the header not only
adds more information to the front cover but also interest the
audience as it mentions information that they want to hear about.
Layout- I used the idea to have a main image at the centre of my front
cover and a smaller picture to the side like the Kerrang magazine because it
draws focus to the featured article which my audience would be most
interested in but also includes pictures of other artists that are supposed to
be well known and easily recognised so that those smaller pictures also
attract an audience if the main image is not enough.
Colour- From studying the Kerrang magazine I determined the best colours for my
genre of alternative rock would be black and white and one brighter colour. Once
looking at other cover pages I saw that the most used colours are red, blue, yellow
and green. After having a choice of these colours I used an audience questionnaire to
find out the colours the audience wanted which turned out to be red like in the
Kerrang magazine above which is where I got the use of red, black and white colours
from.
4. Second picture: I have used the idea of having a second
picture along with my main image of another artist just
like NME. The idea to have a border around the picture
helps it to stand out which I achieved using an outer glow
of the black rectangle background.
Headline: Following NME I decided to place
the main headline across the main image and
to place the smaller headings off to the side of
the main image
Colour: With the smaller headings I used the idea of alternating
the colours of the headings from NME. I used the colours my
audience feedback wanted for the genre which where red, black
and white but seeing as the background was black the colours
used would then be red and white.
5. Main image: I used the idea of having the top half of my contents
page being the main image as I like the style and look it gives the
page.
Header: I used the idea to have the header in between the
image and the contents as I thought it could act as a divider
between the two.
Columns: I liked the idea of having a thin line between the
columns as it is like a divider and it helped me to size my
columns and how much I needed to write
Looking at the kerrang magazine for ideas I decided to use the
idea of having a smaller picture underneath the heading of one
of the contents to show that he is the artists featured in that
article.
6. Image: I used the idea to have the main image covering most of the page from this kerrang article as I like
the idea that the picture is there are the size draws the audiences attention and they will be interested to
read the article.
Colour: I used the idea to have the interview and response in different colours because it helps to distinguish
between the two. I used the colours from my magazine colour theme of red and white as the background is
black.
8. Headline: I have developed the heading by using a colour gradient in my heading than just one block
colour like the Kerrang magazine has as the gradient looks more appealing.
Barcode moved to the right
with date and issue
number above.
9. Headings: I have developed the headings on Kerrang by keeping th black box as
it fits my colour scheme nbut having white splatter paint to make the black box
more original and give a worn look. I also made the text in the headings red to
contrast the black box and white splatter paint.
10. Article: I have developed the article from the NME article by having the
article on the side of the picture instead of underneath and by having
alternating colours that follow my colour scheme to help the article stand
out.
12. Pose: The pose of my model is one I have not seen on an alternative
rock magazine as the poses seem to just be a mid-shot of the
models' face so to have the hand o=in a peace positions looks new
to me.
13. I have challenged the idea of having the editors profile on the contents page as I wanted
to have more space for more contents and the editors' profile gets in the way of that and
can be positioned at the back of my magazine instead of the contents page which I've
found quite common.
14. I have challenged the idea of having a quote on my double page spread opting instead for the heading I
used for the front cover and a description at the top left corner. I wanted that to draw in the audience
with the gradient heading instead of just a quote with no heading to imply who the article is about as I
think the picture and heading would be enough to draw in fans.
