What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and Why?
Publishers The most popular way of distributing a media magazine is through a major publisher. However, some people choose to distribute their magazine through smaller independent publishers. This is mainly due to smaller budgets and smaller distribution networks. Magazines distributed by independent publishers tend to be less sophisticated and available in fewer outlet stores. Compared to major publishers who distribute their magazines to high street shops and supermarkets, independent publishers seem to be involved in a smaller business.  My magazine would need to be distributed through a major publisher. This is because it is very mainstream compared to independent publishers who usually tend to work with unknown artists who are striving to become famous. As I have used big music names such as “Lily Allen” and “Chase & Status” this immediately directs me towards a major distributor.
IPC & EMAP IPC IPC is one of the UK’s leading consumer magazine and digital publishers with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year. It was originally formed as a international publishing company in 1963. In 1968 IPC bought the Daily Mirror and became the IPC-Mirror Group. IPC is one of the main magazine distributors. I would distribute my magazine with this company as it is international and owns magazines such as Q and NME. EMAP EMAP is a British Limited company, specializing in the production of business-to business magazines. This particular distributor deals with more formal magazines and papers which is why I feel that it would not suit my music magazine.
Making A Profit Major magazine distributors only publish magazines that they feel will up their revenue. This means that there has to be something significant about the magazine, and it has to be popular within the industry at the time. I have found that Independent distributors tend to publish magazines that feature unknown artists. These types of magazines attract audiences that are interested in music and the cycle continues. Major distributors only publish artists that are already famous to ensure that the magazine will sell when it is released.  It seems as though the core message of magazines published by major distributors shows that the industry is going to stay the same, and that it is very hard to become famous as an unknown artist. The benefits of having an independent publisher is that you can ensure that they care more about the music than the publishing and fame. The types of artist’s that request independent publishers are those than feel strongly about their music.
