The evolution and changing role of the music video from 1900, and its likely
development
For years now artists have been reliant on music videos to publicise their music
and gain a reputation, however the concept of a music video has changed from
the past until today as well as continuous changes that are yet to come.
The Jazz Singer produced in 1927 the first sound film ever made has given artists
today an opportunity to produce music videos themselves. For example in 1983
one of the most famous music videos produced ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson
established a reputation for him slowly leading to more music videos being
produced.
MTV began as a music channel where you could view the latest music videos
however today it is known for more than just music such as reality TV shows. This
is no longer the primary place where people access music videos because of the
recent YouTube website. You tube has become a place which caters to peoples
specific needs unlike MTV, I believe in the future this will continue to be the case
as people who enjoy specific music will only be targeted to their specific needs
and not music that they have no interest in. This is where MTV fell down on
because they didn’t cater to those specific needs.
Future consumption in my opinion will be mostly on the web such as through You
Tube, although this will affect the music channels shown on television. On the
other hand this will benefit those who want feedback as people are able to
comment and write their own opinions. You Tube currently runs a system where
suggestions come up which people may be interested in based on their previous
search, leading to more specifically based music search engines.
Today we are able to produce and distribute music videos for less. In the past
music videos cost a significant amount more than they do today however the
quality these videos were produced at were worth the cost of them.

Iphones, IPad’s, mobile phones and digital cameras have made it possible to
produce a fairly good music video, although this method lacked the quality of the
overall video. This could suggest that the upcoming music videos could be more
simplistic and cheap but will lack the quality they used to have. The original
method of producing a music video via a record company then slowly gaining a
reputation has almost come to an end. Upcoming artists such as Ed Sherran have
gained their reputation through producing simple and cheap videos which seems
to be the most successful way of promoting yourself now and in the upcoming
future.
Music videos when first produced used only natural sounds either in a studio or
on a live stage this was the basic way however it has changed to more enhanced
sounds or sounds produced not naturally(For example drum and bass). AS well as
the sound changing the content today is shown to be based around celebrities
rather than the quality of the music. In my opinion this will continue to happen
and promote their video through a branding image.
In the upcoming future overall I feel that most music videos will become simpler,
cheaper and be promoted through a brand image such as what they are now. In
the near future we will access music videos through individual means for example
through the artist’s home page or even have their own website set up just for
peoples specific needs. More people will receive reputation through internet
videos rather than going through record contracts which I feel will eventually die
off.
