MEDIA STUDIES A2 EVALUATION By Kristian Siddall
How do my products use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My albums cover to say the least is quite the conventional album cover, however, I consider it unconventional to its genre. Bon Jovi a very well known group famous for there earlier music as a glam rock band however this song shows a different side to the band… so I decided why not use this to my advantage to create a new image around the sound… I wanted it to be as straight forward and simple as possible so I took the bands heart and knife logo and edited the colours to suit what I needed to do this because I think that the darker colours suggest a side to them no often seen something unfamiliar but along with the heart takes the audience into that comfort zone with the music. I used a tree as my image because I wanted to bring the feel of family into it, home is usually where family is so I linked this to family tree quite a loose link… but I think it works well all the same.
Poster With my poster I went with an unconventional approach to the tour poster using it to not only advertise the tour but a the album as well this kind of sends the message to the viewer that they should get the album, rater than plaster it across a poster have it sitting in a corner just hinting, the other conventional thing about this tour poster is that I chose to make it landscape I did this because I felt that the band and CD cover needed more room to be displayed than the tour dates. Why? Well bon jovi do no end of tours and this sound is new ad the whole image that follows is new, so I chose to show it off more than it being “just another bon jovi tour” as for the image I used, I used this image as it clearly displayed what i wanted it to.
As for my video it really does follow music video conventions as it follows certain rules, for example the video has a main character and what is mentioned in the lyrics in some parts happens in the video the video also features the main subject playing the song on his guitar and singing it as if he is speaking in the third person this is to make the viewer believe that what is mentioned in the lyrics is what is happening to this young man I think this also provides easier viewing as the audience aren't confused by the clash in video and the lyrics the subject for my video was a young man as the lyrics quote you the the home from the BOY, not the BOY from his home, so to start with the subject had to be male and quite young however being out on the street is nothing for the youth so I chose a youth who looked old enough and capable enough of looking after himself on the street. MUSIC VIDEO These are examples of the long shots and close ups I used in my video
Using Andrew Goodwins theory of music video analysis is it easy to see that my music video complies with many of his concepts? Theory 1. the video should demonstrate genre characteristics. This particular task would have been difficult for me as the genre labeled for my chosen song is actually country and western and as I don’t really own a house in the country and my video is all about coming home, my video would have been very difficult to shoot without trespassing or braking the law so unfortunately my video does not really display genre characteristics as per however the song is played on acoustic guitars so I guess my only link to genre would be there as in the video I am seen playing the acoustic guitar. Theory 2. there should be a relation between the lyrics and the visuals. This rule I have a abided by a good example would be when the line “ if you’re a million miles away or just a mile up the road ” is sung I make a cut from a youth walking from a clear distance to quite close this is to represent the difference in the two distances mentioned so yes I do believe that I have followed this rule. Theory 3. there should be a link between the music and the visuals. Well prior to this on this slide I have mentioned that you do see me playing an acoustic guitar in the video and this is what the song was written and recorded on so yes the visuals and the music have been linked together Theory 4. conventions used by the record label, do they appear ? The convention in most of bon jovis videos with the exceptions of “have a nice day & sleep when I'm dead” the band is usually seen playing at some point in the video however I don’t have access to them so to try and follow the convention I replaced the band with myself not quite the same but an attempt at following the convention non the less. As far the conventional music video goes I believe I have made a pretty good attempt at recreating one following some conventions and challenging others
What have you learned from the feedback you have received from your audience? After gaining feedback from my audience i found that my products seemed to work really well apart from my music video didn’t really match my other products as I shot my music video in the day and my other two product were a completeloter time of day, after looking at this I did agree and If I were to do this again I would probably shoot more of my video during the night.
