nations-are-the-last-subculture
Teenagers have always been a tricky lot,
expressing themselves through the counter-
culture, be that clothes, hair, sex, music or drugs.
But these figures reveal something truly shocking:
today's teenagers are square.
That's right: square. They enjoy school, love
spending time with their families, live healthy,
productive lifestyles. There has been a marked
decline in risky behaviour, such as alcohol and
cigarette consumption. At the same time, however,
more of them report 'mainly spending time by
themselves'. Many say they never go out. Nearly
half of girls — 47 per cent — and 30 per cent of
boys reported using social networking or instant
messaging sites 'throughout the day'.

HOW HAS THE INTERNET
CHANGED IDENTITY?

The power of anonymity and the ability to present different
aspects of yourself.
HENRY JENKINS
Digital Media – Online – Participatory culture – empowers
young people.
“Decisions are being made in corporate boardrooms and teenage
bedrooms”
Convergent culture – All media is becoming one. – The Internet is
merging media forms together. And bringing people together (with
different interests) online.
BUCKINGHAM &
GAUNTLETT
Buckingham – The rise of online identity has changed
traditional existing identites and subcultures. (Agrees with
his notion identity is constantly changing, complex, and
negotiated)
Gauntlett – The internet allows us to create our own identity
and Web2.0 etc. allow us all to participate.
Making is connecting.
ARE ONLINE IDENTITIES USING
‘NEW MEDIA’ DIFFERENT FROM
TRADITIONAL MEDIA IDENTITIES?

“Children and Youth are a distinct social group and want to be
treated as such. A successful example of this is the TV Channel
Nickelodeon where it’s all about kids; their views, interests, not
being adults, about being fun and innovative. It gives children a
sense of empowerment. But we must remember that adults
have sold this empowerment to them. So this idea of
independence is not true it is more about enabling children
to be independent consumers but masquerading it as social
rights.”
- David Buckingham
THOUGHTS TO
CONCLUDE ON
• Does the internet empower young people and allow ‘bedrooms’ to
become as important as ‘boardrooms’ as Jenkins states?
• Does new media and new media platforms allow us to converge, or
further alienate young people and adults?
• Does new media and new media platforms allow the mediation of
identity by outsiders to be challenged?
• Does the internet and new media bring us together or make us more
alone?
• Does the internet and new media destroy traditional collective
identities, create new ones, or both?

VICEhttps://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/neknomi nations-are-the-last-subculture Teenagers have always been a tricky lot, expressing themselves through the counter- culture, be that clothes, hair, sex, music or drugs. But these figures reveal something truly shocking: today's teenagers are square. That's right: square. They enjoy school, love spending time with their families, live healthy, productive lifestyles. There has been a marked decline in risky behaviour, such as alcohol and cigarette consumption. At the same time, however, more of them report 'mainly spending time by themselves'. Many say they never go out. Nearly half of girls — 47 per cent — and 30 per cent of boys reported using social networking or instant messaging sites 'throughout the day'. • 12. IS ONLINE REALLY THAT DIFFERENT AND FREE?
  • 13. IS THE FUTURE REALLY THAT DIFFERENT AND FREE “Children and Youth are a distinct social group and want to be treated as such. A successful example of this is the TV Channel Nickelodeon where it’s all about kids; their views, interests, not being adults, about being fun and innovative. It gives children a sense of empowerment. But we must remember that adults have sold this empowerment to them. So this idea of independence is not true it is more about enabling children to be independent consumers but masquerading it as social rights.” - David Buckingham
