3) Top of the Pops Jan-Feb 2011 Selena Gomez edition uses bright colors and images of popular bands to attract younger readers and directs them to articles.
Kerrang magazine was originally focused on new wave of British heavy metal in the 1980s and 1990s but lost popularity by shifting to cover newer trends like grunge. It has been published weekly since 1981. NME also targets rock fans and has a similar audience to Kerrang. MOJO magazine was first published in 1993 to cater to the growing interest in classic rock. It covers both newer and older, less mainstream artists. All three magazines use color schemes and layouts to draw readers in and highlight key information like cover artists and included bonuses like CDs.
The document discusses key elements of a music magazine cover design including the masthead, price, date, central image, and additional images. The masthead needs to stand out to catch readers' attention. The price and date provide important information to readers. The central image should be striking and complement other design elements. Additional celebrity images further entice readers to purchase the issue.
The document analyzes the covers and contents pages of various magazines to understand their target audiences and marketing techniques. Some key points:
1) Magazine covers prominently feature famous celebrities to attract readers and boost sales.
2) Mastheads are large and colorful to clearly identify the magazine brand.
3) Main stories are highlighted in bold, large text to draw the eye.
4) Additional articles and sections are summarized to entice readers to explore the full issue. Colorful and engaging designs keep content interesting.
The document discusses the layout and design elements of magazine covers. Key elements include the logo, masthead, skyline, cover lines, barcode, price, and main image. The logo and masthead identify the magazine brand for readers. Cover lines are used to promote stories inside and attract audiences. Imagery and text are tailored to the target genre and audience. Pricing and barcode information is placed strategically to not interfere with the overall design.

From the first glance of this front cover it grabs my attention as there is a red, white and black colour scheme, these shows
very strongly as the main image model is also representing the colour scheme by wearing black and red lipstick. This magazine
has dark colours which show that it is not a pop magazine. Also Cheryl has gone for a more rebel pose to ensure she portrays
the genre of this particular music magazine.
For this magazine the target audience is rock fans because artists that are in this magazine such as ‘the white stripes’ are
artists of rock & roll, ages between teens and late 25’s. Q magazine is a mainstream magazine.

This content pages is very detailed and organised as the text are in order, the colours used are red, white and black which I
think are the main colours of a ‘Q’ magazine. The information provided on the content page would appeal to the target
audience of rock & roll music, also the image shown gives us a clue that the magazine features them and may also be based
on them. The background stays with the white, red and black. The page is busier because it has more text rather than more
images.
At the bottom of the page there is a Q review, this shows that it is important because it is the only test that may be more
important and it also suggests that the magazine wants people to read it.
The Q contents pages is quite bland and as only two images are included on the contents page. A review is on the contents
page, I don’t like this idea as that could be something included in the magazine and the space used for this review could be
brightened up with some images which will attract the audience more. All page numbers are highlighted in red which I think
is a cool trendy idea.

In order to create a professional-looking double page spread within my magazine, I had to research the double page
spreads of current music magazines. This one from 'Q the music' magazine features Cheryl Cole. There are many striking
features on this double page spread, for instance the large red 'C' which overlaps the text on the left hand page,
emphasising the fact that these two pages are all about Cheryl Cole. The use of the red for the 'C' and the white for the
background ties in with the reoccurring theme running through the whole of 'Q!' magazine. The large ‘C’ placed underneath
the text is used to represent the first letter of Cheryl’s name; this is also another convention that is popular within Q
magazine. Within Q magazine one of their conventions is on the double page spread is to always dedicate one page to an
image of the main artist featured in the magazine. This convention attracts large amounts of the audience due to the fact
that this artist was the main image of the cover. The main image on the facing page is very eye catching and the fact that it
take up a whole page with no overlapping of text promotes the feisty image of Cheryl Cole, how she cannot be pushed out
of the limelight. The colour scheme of black, red and white is followed throughout the magazine. The white background
behind the image makes the main image stand out more as what Cheryl is wearing is black and they are opposite colours.
The use of large red text at the bottom of the page is there to highlight a key quote that Cheryl herself has said in the
interview, and the reader may read this first, because the eye is drawn to it, and then will be drawn in and want to read
more because it is an interesting, un-explained quote. The font of the spread is quite simple, showing how it is not fancy
fonts and lettering that will sell the feature, but the content itself; all the information and the story on Cheryl Cole.
By involving the page number and date it reassures the reader what their reading is up-to-date. The page number also
helps to navigate the reader around the magazine; it will gratify the customer needs of information.
