MERS-CoV, a novel coronavirus identified in the Middle East, causes severe respiratory disease with a high mortality rate and has the potential for human-to-human transmission. As of May 2014, there have been 701 confirmed cases, resulting in 249 deaths, with no sustained community transmission yet confirmed. Efforts in vaccine and drug development are underway but remain at early stages due to the relatively low number of infections and the high costs associated with such research.
