The Ferro Alloy Plant at Joda was commissioned in 1958 and is in continuous operation since. It currently produces 50,000 MTPA of HC Ferro Manganese in two Submerged Arc Furnaces.
Gas Cleaning Plant (GCP) slurry generated in wet venture scrubbers is collected in slurry pits inside the plant for drying and subsequent disposal. Because of space constraints, and in order to recycle the water used in the wet venture scrubbers, Tata Steel is upgrading its GCP slurry handling process by the installation of a GCP slurry dewatering plant.
Construction of large structures within an operating plant, without affecting operations is always a challenge. The job is even more challenging, since the plant is 58 years old, with many unmarked structures, pipes, and cables lying underneath.
This paper discusses how new and unexpected challenges are tackled during the construction of the Slurry Dewatering Plant without compromising on safe working.

Acrylamide polymers are frequently used as friction reducers (FRs) in slick water fracturing.
Although these FRs are effective at curtailing turbulent flow, the resultant formation damage is a major concern. This issue becomes worse when high-salinity water is encountered. Attempts are made to utilize breakers to reduce the extent of damage. However, the results are mostly subpar in nature. In this paper, we describe a breaker-free, non-damaging nano-composited friction reducer, namely FR-2, that is applicable under essentially all-brine situations. The extents of friction
reduction and rates of hydration are characterized with flow loop. Formation damages are assessed with using synthetic quartz cores. Various conventional friction reducers are compared with FR-2 regarding core damage, friction reduction under various brines and rate of hydration. The results
show that whereas these conventional FRs led to a core damage as high as 99.5%, that by FR-2 was essentially zero. On the other hand, although these conventional FRs perform well in terms of friction reduction in fresh water or even in KCl, their performances deteriorate substantially in the presence CaCl 2 . Most strikingly, when FeCl 3 is present, the FRs in comparison lost their effects entirely. In contrast, FR-2 remains consistently robust in reducing friction regardless of the brines.
FR-2 hydrates in 10–20 sec, whereas some of the tested FRs require longer than 2 min to achieve the same results. Field trials corroborate the effectiveness of using FR-2 for well clean out and hydraulic fracturing. To our best knowledge, this is the first report on a breaker-free, non-damaging friction reducer for slick water fracturing. The novelty also lies on the fact that the performance of this FR demonstrates independency upon brine variation. These aspects are expected to enhance
oil and gas production and to render peace of mind during fracking operations.

LaserBond™ achieves a welded or metallurgical bond with minimal, precisely controlled heat input provided by an optimized laser beam. Temperature sensitive components and materials, such as hardened shafts, gears etc, can be repaired with minimal risk of distortion or other undesirable heat effects. The metallurgical bond allows LaserBond™ applied layers to be used in high impact, heavily loaded/stressed situations with no risk of spalling or separation of the overlay. The controlled energy minimizes the undesirable thermal decomposition of hard phases such as carbides, resulting in optimum wear resistance. Due to the extremely low dilution with the substrate, high specification materials can be applied in a thin layer with corrosion and wear resistant surfaces as thin as 0.3mm possible. Thick overlays for significant repairs of up to 20mm can also be applied in multiple passes. Heat affected zones are minimized and the stress related cracking inherent in welded or PTA applied hard facing is generally eliminated. Standard LaserBond™ overlay options include Tungsten Carbide, Stainless Steels, Nickel alloys such as Inconel, and Cobalt alloys such as Stellite1. Other materials can be applied on request.

Bonding performances are always a combination of multiple
factors, such as mechanical, chemical or electrostatic
interactions. Bonding is a matter of interface, as the adhesive
has to adhere well to the substrates to be bonded. Therefore,
the surface conditions of the parts to be bonded are a critical
factor in achieving a dependable quality bond.
Huntsman industrial adhesives are high performance
adhesives which adhere firmly to most materials. High
strength bonds can be obtained after removal of grease and
loose particles, e.g. rust, from the surfaces to be joined.
However, when maximum strength and long-term durability
are required, a more thorough mechanical or a chemical
surface pretreatment is highly recommended.
The type of surface preparation to be carried out prior to
bonding depends on the expected performances (Figures
18, 19 and 20), the service conditions of the assembly and

2. CENTRIFUGE SEPARATORS: The extraction of bitumen and
oil from sand using hot or warm water processes produces a
slurry waste that is hydraulically transported and stored
within surface tailings ponds. One of the major operational
and environmental challenges facing oil sands mining is the
separation of water from the fine tailings to strengthen the
deposits so they can be reclaimed.
Centrifuges are mechanical devices with moving parts that
rotate at high speeds, creating high gravitational forces.
These high g-forces pull apart the Sea
water/solids/hydrocarbon emulsions, leaving behind a
relatively clean diluted bitumen product. Due to their
rotating mechanical parts, centrifuges are susceptible to a
lot of wear and tear.

Typical Application of SAP Mechanical Face

Mechanical Face Seal-Cross Section
SAP Parts™ proposed unique Super Duplex grade have a ferritic-
austenitic microstructure, with a phase balance of approximately
50% ferrite and 50% austenite. Duplex grades combine many of the
beneficial properties of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels. The
duplex microstructure contributes to the high strength and high
resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
Other characteristic properties of duplex grades include good
abrasion and erosion resistance, good fatigue resistance, high-energy
absorption and low thermal expansion.
The high mechanical strength of duplex grades is a result of
the duplex microstructure and the alloying with nitrogen. This high
strength gives opportunities for reducing both weight and cost as a
thinner material can be used.
Being highly alloyed and have a corrosion resistance comparable to
high performance austenitic steels, the typical applications for SAP
Parts™ super duplex steel can be in desalination plants, Oil Sand
separators, seawater systems, flue-gas cleaning, storage tanks and
pressure vessels.
