This document discusses the installation of Strongwell's SAFRAILTM fiberglass handrail system at the Stonecutter's Island Sewage Treatment Works in Hong Kong in 1996. Over 7,000 meters of the corrosion and UV resistant handrail were installed around flocculation and sedimentation tanks at the plant, which operates in an extremely corrosive environment. Square handrails were used and fabricated to meet fiberglass handrail specifications, and were easily installed with epoxy adhesive at connections between horizontal and vertical rail sections within the plant's internal areas.

As part of the Hong Kong Government Strategic Sewage
Disposal Scheme (SSDS), Stonecutters Island Sewage
Treatment Works was built to handle sewage contains high level
of toxicity before discharged into the sea.
The plant has been operating in an extremely corrosive
environment and thus materials installed in the plant must
therefore be corrosion resistant, structurally strong and UV
resistant, with minimum maintenance to be required. Being able
to meet these stringent requirements, some 7000m of
Strongwell's SAFRAILTM fiberglass handrail were then installed
around the plant's flocculation and sedimentation tanks.
Square handrails were used in this project. The fabrication must
follow the fiberglass handrail specifications. Installation was
easy with recommended epoxy adhesive applied to connectors
and the inside surfaces of the tubes at each connections of
horizontal and vertical handrails, internal floor area for building
users.
