MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT
GOALS (MDGS)
 In September 2000, leaders of 191 countries gathered at the United Nations
headquarters and signed the historic Millennium Declaration, in which they
committed to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental
degradation, and discrimination against women. The MDGs are derived from
this Declaration, and all have specific targets and indicators.
 The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are commonly described as a
“roadmap for world development by 2015”. Goal to be completed by 2015
GOALS TO ACHIEVE
TILL 2015
8 goals are as per below :-
 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
 Achieve universal primary education
 Promote gender equality and empower women
 Reduce child mortality
 Improve maternal health
 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
 Ensure environmental sustainability
 Develop a Global Partnership for Development
ACHIEVEMENTS AND
FAILURE
Encouragements
Four of the encouraging results are that:-
 Extreme poverty has more than halved, falling from almost half the developing world
population in 1990 to around 14% today
 Previous disparities between boys’ and girls’ enrolment in primary education no longer
exist, on average, for the developing world
 Between 2000 and 2013, tuberculosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment interventions
saved an estimated 37 million lives.
 More than two and a half billion people gained access to clean drinking water since 1990
Disappointments
Sadly, two of the disappointing ones are that:-
× The global maternal mortality rate fell far short of the target and, with the present rate of
progress, the MDG will not be reached even by 2030
× Giving people access to an improved sanitation facility also fell far short
KEY PLAYERS IN MDGS
ACHIEVEMENTS
 Nations that played a major role in MDGs achievements were both
India and China.
 The major successful countries include “China- Brought nearly 178
million people out of poverty” and “India- 271 were out of poverty
from 2005-2015”. The World Bank estimated that MDG 1A [halving the
proportion of people living on less than $1 a day] was achieved in
2008 mainly due to the results from these two countries alone, Nepal
and Bangladesh were right behind in the very list of country
achievements.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
GOALS (SDGS)
 The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and
more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face,
including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental
degradation, peace and justice. The 17 Goals are all interconnected, and in order
to leave no one behind, it is important to be achieved them all by 2030.
 SDGs is the successor of MDGs continued from 2016 till 2030, currently 193
countries in the world (193 officially recognised by UN, rest 4 countries out of 197
are observer nations. In total 215 is unofficial country count) are a part of SDGs
project.
