Whenever I get asked what my favorite book is, I always reply The Pirates Dilemma.
The book tells the story of punk, disco, hip-hop, graffiti, and how modern technology has made the ideas and innovations of youth culture increasingly intimate and increasingly global at the same time.
It’s truly fascinating.
And when you look back, you can see the origins of the current social media revolution can be traced as far back as the 70’s (if not even further).
Back in the 70’s punk was the start of a revolution. Now, the only things that have changed are the platforms and the ease at which we can connect and create.

Presentation for UTS Library Research Week 2011 on how academic researchers can make use of various social technologies and networks.
My thanks to a colleague, Sally Scholfield for her assistance with this.
I have not described the social technologies, tools and articles referred to or linked within this presentation. Short descriptions can be found on the Diigo list that brings it all together here:

3. Social Network It is a social structure made up of individuals (or organizations) called “nodes” Its applications are uncountable However, some of them are widely used and known such as MySpace, Facebook and twitter.
4.
5. Q1:What was the idea behind the creation of MySpace? Both of them have unique features and not a cliché starting business. The goal was to establish a network that was very visceral. The visuals on MySpace are stunning and the options are endless. Presently, MySpace includes features that host video, visual, audio, and almost all other types.
6. The autonomy of MySpace leaves the choice up to the user. It all depends on what they like. My space is a social network that connects people Myspace has a Groups feature. In addition, since the first day Myspace was created, they wanted to gain profit and compete with other social networks such as Facebook and twitter.
7.
8. Q2: How is Facebook different from MySpace? They differ greatly. MySpace is mainly about communicating with friends/family and discovering new cultures, people, and content (professional video, music). According to Richard MacManus, Facebook and MySpace are at opposite ends of the spectrum where: Facebook is viewed as "real identity” MySpace as "fantasized identity” MySpace is about the improvement of user’s public profile, and enhancement of the image displayed to the public. On the other hand, Facebook is basically about self promotion.
9.
10. Q3: Have you used MySpace or Facebook, and if so, how often? What was your experience Our generation has used Facebook more frequently MySpace. It is a great social network that allows us to be in contact with our friends, relatives and colleges. It helped us find long lost childhood friends. Others use Facebook as tool to contacted many people with the same interest such as the same taste in music, poetry, books and much more. To us, Facebook made people closer to each other and helped many others in getting to know new people, and to share their thoughts and interests with others.
11.
12. Q4: Do you think Twitter will overtake Facebook as the most popular social networking platform in the UAE? Explain? We believe that Twitter will overtake Facebook in the near future (Egyptian revolution). University students became more aware of social networks such as Twitter where they can share their toughs and concerns. Companies on the other hand use Twitter so they can start conversations about their products and services that is not limited to their fans. Twitter is a social platform where people can share their information with everyone, as opposed to Facebook where people choose whom to be friends with, and whose information they choose to receive.
13. Twitter is the social platform individuals as well as companies and organizations use to find all their information. According to the a metaphor cited from article by Colette Martinto on the Online Social Media website “Twitter is much like Times Square on New Year’s Eve, it’s noisy and open to all. Facebook on the other hand is more like a party invitation with an RSVP.”
