Corruption has been a serious issue in India for centuries. During the colonial era in the 17th century, the British Parliament witnessed debates on bribery and corruption in the East India Company. Corruption increased in many transition countries after the fall of communism and adoption of democracy. While democratic countries are less corrupt than non-democracies, corruption remains pervasive across India according to Transparency International data from 2005. Numerous political scandals and scams have plagued India such as the 2G spectrum scam, Commonwealth Games scam, and Bofors scam. Corruption is also prevalent in politics and the police service.
