It is time for everyone in education to really do something to address the well-known and much used comments around “kids have changed”. Because they have changed, or should I say, some of the way they live their lives have changed. We are living in a connected age and access to information; to views on any given topic, are only a click away. In the digital age, more than ever before, we need to inspire young people, fire their imaginations, immerse, excite, challenge and motivate them. The technology at the teacher’s disposal in the digital age, when mixed with the analogue, holds such potential for inspiration. Learning to teach in this age is a journey all educators must embark on regardless of the stage they think they are currently at. This keynote will provide an in-depth overview of techniques and tools, practices and environments that will inspire educators to make changes to the way they view teaching with technology and their classroom practice.

Using smart devices in educational settings as learning and community building tools can promote interpersonal communication and encourage young people to positively express their individuality and build their student-to-student, student-to-educator relationships. The activities that will be presented and experienced during this workshop use the technology that young people use - cell phones, social networking sites, laptops, blogs, and digital cameras. These activities focus upon and build diversity and cultural sensitivity, teamwork and problem solving, self-reflection and self-exploration, and communication and self-expression (adapted from Wolfe & Sparkman, 2009).
Creating a classroom website
There are many free online tools available for creating a classroom website, as highlighted in this presentation. A few of the tools mentioned are Google Sites, Weebly, Schoolnotes, Blogger, WordPress, PB Works, Wikispaces, Facebook, Edmodo, Schoology, Collaborize Classroom, and Ning.
Outdoor activities with mobile devices
This document provides examples of outdoor activities that students can do using mobile devices. Some of the activities described include using apps to:
1) Take pictures of objects in nature and write descriptions of their features.
2) Play a game of mobile hide and seek where one student takes a picture and the others try to find the hidden object.
3) Imagine clouds are animals or objects and create stories combining pictures and imaginings.

Singapore likely existed as a trading port before 1819 based on three sources of evidence:
1) The Malay Annals from the 16th century describe Singapore as a thriving trading center under Sang Utama.
2) A 14th century Chinese account mentions Longyamen (Dragon’s Teeth Gate) and Dan-ma-xi (Temasek) which were exotic trading ports.
3) Archaeological discoveries from sites like Fort Canning Hill provide evidence of commercial and religious activities dating back to the 14th century, indicating Singapore was an important trading city. However, the evidence is scanty and its interpretation is open to debate.

Reinventing Education for the 21st Century (Designing School 2.0)
As Thomas Friedman persuasively argued in this book "The World is Flat," we live in a very different and rapidly changing economic and cultural environment. Schools need to change to prepare students for the dynamic opportunities of the 21st century workforce. Collaboration in most of our schools today is still called "cheating." Our factory model of transmission-based education must be transformed into one where learners regularly collaborate, access and "remix" digital information, and extend their learning beyond the traditional bell schedule. One to one laptop initiatives, where every student and teacher have wireless computing devices; schools and libraries becoming community learning hubs offering public wireless and wired connectivity to the Internet; and the deregulation of education which frees learners to spend time in real-world, problem-based and project-based learning need to become hallmarks of education in the 21st century. This presentation shares this vision for reinventing education: Designing School 2.0, and offers suggestions for how civic leaders can move toward this vision at local levels.
Leveraging the Potential of Social Media for School Public Relations
Social media technologies offer excellent opportunities for school public relations officials as well as teachers, administrators, librarians and others to communicate with parents and other community constituents. In this session we'll explore how educators and students are using Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, as well as a variety of wiki and blog platforms to "tell their story" about the wonderful learning experiences and opportunities available in their schools. We'll address legal issues including confidentiality, CIPA, FERPA, and liability concerns, as well as practical issues like how to moderate community comments as well as student-created text and media postings. School officials should proactively embrace opportunities to use social media technologies in smart and effective ways to safely communicate with constituents on the global stage which is the Internet.* This session will showcase current examples of educational leaders who are doing this successfully, as well as share ideas for how school leaders can get started.

Julian Prior and Sam Taylor, learning technologists at Southampton Solent University, presented on open digital badges to the Hampshire Branch of the British Computer Society on October 20, 2014. Open badges can recognize skills, motivate goal achievement, and indicate quality. Badges are digital images with attached metadata like issuer, criteria, and expiration date. They can reward transferable skills, give learners control of their data, use an open framework, and recognize skills along a learner's path. Khan Academy, Chicago Summer of Learning, and DigitalMe are some examples of badge issuers. The presenters discussed potential issues with badges and had attendees brainstorm and design their own badge ideas.

Exploring Gamification Techniques for Classroom Management

Student prep letter

8) It gives good ‘direction’ on to many degree courses
9) But equally into jobs as well
10) So, maybe studying Computing can lead to access to the finer things…
