Number sense refers to an intuitive understanding of numbers, their properties, and relationships. Research shows that early number sense predicts later math achievement and correlates with math test scores through high school. Number sense involves more than just counting, knowing basic facts, computational fluency, and place value - it includes comparing, composing, decomposing numbers, and reasoning about quantities. Developing number sense will be the focus of math instruction.
