The mass media have an important role in modern democratic societies as the main source of information for the population and the basis on which they form opinions and make voting decisions. Competition for readers and viewers has increased as media organizations fight for attention, with their survival dependent on advertising revenue which relies on audience size. Printed media struggle to compete with electronic media for news, forcing them to turn to entertainment, scandals, and fear-mongering while spending less on serious reporting. The production of news goes through many steps from sources to publication, and selection and distortion can occur at each stage due to the influences of sources, journalists, audiences, owners, advertisers and politics.
