An introduction to some of the natural toys and games of the Jenu Kuruba children. This indigenous community has been displaced from their traditional settlements within the forests in H.D.Kote, near Mysore, Karnataka, following the creation of the national park.
This presentation was made at the 'Towards a Higher Education of Inclusion, Collaboration and Community Engagement' workshop by D. Narasimhan from the Dept. of Botany, Madras Christian College, Chennai. Professor Narasimhan pointed out that agriculture is the single most impactful shift upon the environment in human history. Settled cultivation wiped out huge swathes of forest and is far more destructive than the much-maligned shifting cultivation, also described as slash-and-burn cultivation. This shift in human practice is integral to cultures and indigenous medicines though. Food has become globalised much before markets ever did - with fruits and vegetables indigenous to locations across the globe become central to Indian cuisine. Sacred groves are praised as examples of culture protecting ecology but are vulnerable to the decisions of hard economics with land needs for agriculture or other purposes shrinking their boundaries. Again, a sacred grove could hold certain species alone as totemic objects while others could be destroyed.
This presentation describes games played by children of the Narikuravar - a nomadic community - settled at Ashakulam in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu. The presentation is an outcome of a workshop conducted at the settlement at the Digital Community Archive that the National Folklore Support Centre is setting up there.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. RajkumarSudhendra - renowned Chhau dancer “When I put on the mask I become impersonal. It is easier to slip into the body of another character. Expression does not follow from my face to my body, but its transmitted from my body to my face”
5. The dark clay used for making the mask is found on the banks of the river Kharkai
6. The clay model of the character is fixed on a small wodden plank and cooled for 2-3 days to harden it.
7. The clay model is covered with the wet cloth after moulding.
8. The nose and eyes are fashioned by sharp steel instruments like ‘ChotaKarni’, ‘Badhni’, ‘topi’, and nongly)
9. Each mask is first visualised by studying the character it is to represent, and then given shape and substance
10. The ash powder called ‘Rakh/rakhi’ is sprinkled on it so that the actual mask doesn’t stick to the mould
11. A layer of paper(in bits) is pasted over the mould covering it completely
12. Next a thin layer of clothes(in bits) is applied on to the previous layer
13. This process of ‘clothes on paper on clothes’ is repeated number of times according to the required thickness of the mask
14. The clay is pounded, strained, dissolved in water and made as thick paste to apply on the layers
15. After the model is dry, the clay is scooped out from the hollow of the mask, by the ‘Karni’
16. The mask is scrubbed, polished, and painted with ‘Tuli’ (brush).
17. The stylized contours of the eye-brows, eyes and mouth are painstakingly painted to bring in the distinctive character with which a particular mask is associated
18. Almost all the masks are made with flat pastel shades that gives them a naïve quality of frankness, simplicity and boldness
19. The whole technique of Seraikella Chhau dance has evolved and taken shape around the special feature of the mask. The dance will certainly loose its effectiveness, beauty and originality without masks
21. ‘Shilpakushal’ Prasanna Kumar Mahapatra, renowned mask maker The art of mask making is highly skillful job, confined to a few, often handed down from father to son
