Martial law was declared in the Philippines in 1972 by President Marcos amid rising unrest and threats from communist insurgents. Crime rates dropped after a curfew was implemented. Marcos envisioned reforms in various areas including land, education, labor and the economy under his "New Society" program. While some economic gains were made in the 1970s, corruption was rampant and billions were plundered by Marcos and his cronies. Dissatisfaction grew until the People Power Revolution ousted Marcos in 1986.
