PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
OUTBACK POWER – ARLINGTON, WA 2011 - PRESENT
Senior Applications Engineer for Renewable Energy Product Manufacturer
System design, configuration, sizing and troubleshooting of power conversion products for renewable energy
systems. Develop and deliver training programs for solar system installers. Train technical support staff for
OutBack sales channel partners. Write application notes and white papers for publication on OutBack’s website,
trade publications as well as delivery via webinars and industry conference programs. Develop designs for
OutBack training and lab facilities, new products and custom integrated solutions.
 Developed the initial design for a Backup Power System (BPS) used for backup power on solar array
tracking systems used on utility scale solar sites. Also took over sales role with departure of the sales
rep responsible for the account. My successful proposal meeting both technical and financial
requirements resulted over $2M in sales for 63 systems. Developed factory test procedures,
commissioning plan and led commissioning effort at first of two solar generation sites.
 Developed a simple, cost-effective way to retrofit OutBack battery based backup inverters to grid tied
PV inverters using a method called AC Coupling. Inovative use of a remote operated circuit breaker and
some inexpensive relays and relay logic produced an end to end UL 1741 solution without any external
devices or time consuming and expensive regulatory testing. Solution has been very well received in the
market place with the application note I wrote being reprinted in both Engineering Design News and
Mark Mays Page 2 mark@mays108.rg
Solar Power World publications. Delivered the AC Coupling webinar through several OutBack
distributors as well as OutBack’s own network with very positive feedback and excitement about the
solution.
 Developed the design for OutBack’s Arlington training center and technology lab with much praise from
OutBack senior management. Generated elevation and single line drawings for permitting and
contractor installation. Also developed a similar design for OutBack’s Phoenix training center and was
recognized for success under some diverse circumstances.
 Made numerous single line diagrams for photovoltaic (PV) system designers needing design help, some
of which are published on OutBack’s website. Have devoted significant time to system designers
reviewing and consulting with their designs, system sizing and configuration recommendations including
system setup.
 Quite often get the most difficult problems to troubleshoot both from OutBack Technical Support as well
as other applications engineers. Troubleshooting power distribution systems has been a speciality of
mine since my days at Fluke doing power quality surveys and power quality seminars with N. American
utilities.
 Consistently receive positive feedback from senior management and both OutBack and industry peers.
FORE ENERGY – EDMONDS, WA 2003 - 2010
Manufacturer’s Representative
Obtained independent sales agreements from foreign renewable energy equipment companies. Cold called
C-level managers and won acceptance for multi-million dollar renewable energy systems. Networked within the
energy industry for partnerships that filled in the missing pieces for energy project developers. Developed
financial models for determining ROI of renewable energy projects for biodiesel production and power grid
arbitrage opportunities using ultra high capacity storage (flow) batteries. Developed technical presentations to
process engineers to gain acceptance on manufacturer’s technology.
 Secured preference for FORE Energy products against less expensive American competitors.
 Developed partnerships with investors, raw material suppliers, commodities brokers, and production off-
take purchasers that allowed FORE Energy clients to advance their energy projects to the final stage of
equity financing.
FLUKE CORP – EVERETT, WA 1984-2003

implemented marketing and promotional programs, negotiated sales agreements, added/removed distributors
as necessary, trained and motivated distribution sales force, made joint sales calls, produced and delivered end-
user seminars, handled all aspects of tradeshow selection, setup, promotions including presentation of technical
papers.

programs with sales channel partners.
 Increased year-over-year sales of high-end product lines 25% through the creation and delivery of
Power Quality and Motor Drives Troubleshooting technical courses with state CEU accreditation that led
to sell-out workshops of engineers and electricians.

as 2
nd
in regional sales performance to quota while my vacant territory continued accelerating in
performance to number one in the country for 6 months after leaving Fluke.
