INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE
Engineering Manager, Big Ass Lighting.: Lexington KY 2012-Recent
Engineering Manager tasked with creating an LED Lighting organization within Big Ass Solutions
• Within 6 months had our first Industrial LED lighting product and formed Big Ass Lights with $70M revenue
in lighting. Team consisting of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, program manager.
• LED products include 2000 lumen tunable light, 10000 to 96000 lumen single unit high bay, 30000 lumen
portable IP67 Pedestal/5000 lumen hand held wand
• Developed in house expertise in lumen simulation, reliability/life analysis, correlated thermal simulations,
occupancy sensor designs and wireless controls
• With the LED Engineering team firmly established, focused my energies on Technology Development.
Areas of focus include:
o High Efficiency Lighting Designs (210 lumens per watt at > 80 CRI)
o Design for high reliability and redundant systems operation
o Tunable lighting and effect on alertness/health/Circadian rhythms
2. o High CRI designs using spectral tuning
o Lighting roadmap
o Horticultural LED designs
o Visual Light Communications and Flicker measurement/mitigation
o IOT/Wireless controls/Adaptive lighting
o Optical materials (optical grade silicone, acrylics, polycarbonates), edge lighting
Founder/CEO of Phoenix Global Designs, Inc.: Lexington KY and Atlanta GA 2002-2015
Startup initially involved with contract services to engineering firms and growing to a product driven company.
• LED lighting for horticultural applications
• Consulting services to legal firms and analog simulation services for video transmission
• Contracted to design a Pan/Tilt/Zoom camera controller. Comprised of stepper motor controllers, serial
controllers, and integration of communications protocols
• Worked with Nottingham County, England, government/ police force to resolve laptop theft in schools. This
involved the design and delivery of a system based on high precision sensors and alerting systems which
successfully stopped theft. Several newspaper articles (front page) were written on the company as a result
of the success the system achieved.
• Developed a wireless, mesh networked Real Time Location System for use in hospitals in England to track
medical equipment using graphical user database interfaces on a local computer or remotely over the
internet. System can easily be adapted for emergency personnel enhancing safety through real time
location at a remote site. This involved high speed design, RF, firmware, software, web software, and
business skills (marketing, sales etc.)
• Awarded the “5 Across” winner for most promising entrepreneur in 2011 as chosen by a panel of business
leaders and academic leaders for innovation and business acumen. This was later followed by receiving a
Kentucky Science and Technology Center government grant given to the most promising startups in
Kentucky. This was in relation to an Asset Tracking Mesh Networked Wireless Technology.
Lexmark International: Lexington KY 2005-2012
Multinational corporation involved in development of printers and print services.
Engineer, High end Color Laser. Responsible for interfacing with customer on high visibility issues and resolving
manufacturing issues with production in China.
• On site customer visits to resolve design issues specific to customer applications.
• Regulatory compliance for Safety and FCC compliance.
• Spearheaded a usability group to understand customer interactions with laser printers so as to incorporate
any findings back into the engineering design group to create a best in class design for user experience
AVC Global: Atlanta, GA 2004-2005
Contract installation services for Fiber Optic Telecommunication Equipment.
Director Business Development
3. Responsible for the selling of services to local telecommunications companies in the Atlanta Area (Movaz
and Bell South). This effort included sales calls, detailed quotations, resource allocation, logistical and
program management.
Movaz: Atlanta, GA 2000-2004
Venture capital funded startup involved in the design and manufacturing of Metro Optical Networks
transmitting data services over fiber optic networks over a metropolitan area.
VP of Engineering/Director of Customer Engineering,
As a founding member of this startup, helped define and successfully deliver a metro optic 320x320 wavelength fiber
optic telecommunications hub. This consisted of a 7 foot bay with state of the art switching and terminating telecom
services. The company grew from several engineers to 330 people.
• Involved hiring of engineering teams and managing the Electrical Design Team, Mechanical Design Team,
and Compliance. This includes scheduling, budgeting and process development. The RF compliance was
especially critical as the system comprised of 320 lines operating at 2.4Ghz over wire before being
converted to optical all this over a 7 foot bay of telecom equipment.
• Worked with cross functional teams to integrate requirements from Marketing, Systems Engineering,
Software and Custom ASIC teams into the design of the product under my ownership. One of my main
tasks was the System Engineering for the Metro Optic Hub consisting of a 7 foot bay with optical
terminations, opto-electric conversion, switching and telecom termination equipment.
• Involved pricing negotiations with vendors and evaluation of cutting edge technology
• Worked with contract manufacturers for engineering builds
• Setup complete MRP system and Inventory system for engineering builds of high cost hardware
• Setup a New Product Introduction process adapted for a small, growing company which rivaled systems
used by more established multi-national corporations
• Customer Engineering Director involved with contract negotiations with contractors and customers with
regards to designing and installing their metro optic networks.
• Successfully setup processes which reduced quote turnaround time from days to minutes.
• Defined new business relationships which eliminated the needs for quotations for contract
awarding thus eliminating the added cost burden of quote preparation by doing a complete and
exhaustive process analysis and costing
Nortel/Bell Northern Research/ SRTelecom: Montreal/ Ottawa/Atlanta 1982-2005
Multinational corporation and world renown research facility based in Canada involved in voice and data
communications (US equivalent is Bell Labs and Lucent).
4. Engineering Manager/Design Engineer, Involved in leading edge voice, DSL technology, video, and
introduction into production of designs.
• Design of an Encryption system for South Korean Military and development of the company's first custom
ASIC.
• Analog simulations using sensitivity analysis and Monte-Carlo analysis
• Full scale test automation infrastructure for development reducing test times from weeks to hours complete
with automated test documentation generation. This involved communicating with intelligent equipment
over HP-IB as well as the design of custom hardware. This effort was showcased through the company for
innovation and process improvement.
• Compliance testing and new technology introduction using chip and wire on ceramic substrate
• My department was considered as "best in Class” for voice technology at Nortel with my being classified as
a Critical Resource to the success of Nortel.
Military Contracting: Securiplex: Montreal, 1989 -6 months
Medium size company (~200 people) involved in design of damage control systems for use in Canadian
Military.
Engineering Manager
• Design of a Damage Control System for the Canadian Patrol Frigate. This involved coordinating the
systems, hardware and software teams to deliver to the military's specifications (negotiations) and timeline.
Major contribution involved getting the software, hardware and system teams to work together for product
delivery. This was a critical issue prior to my having joined.
