Mark Barbash is an experienced economic development trainer who has taught courses across the United States for over 30 years on topics including business financing, entrepreneurship, and brownfield redevelopment. He has developed curriculum and instructed courses for numerous economic development organizations. Some of the groups he has regularly taught for include the Ohio Economic Development Association, International Economic Development Council, and National Development Council.

Mark Barbash is a nationally-recognized economic development practitioner and trainer, having developed and taught a wide
range of professional development courses, including business and real estate financing, entrepreneurship, and brownfield
redevelopment for such organizations as the National Development Council, the International Economic Development Council,
National Association of Development Organizations, many state-based economic development associations, and the U.S. Small
Business Administration.
In addition to presenting at hundreds of seminars and conferences across the country, Mark Barbash has also developed new
courses and been an instructor in a wide variety of economic development training seminars and professional development courses.
Following is a partial list of Mark’s speaking and training experience:
 Current: Ohio Basic Economic Development Course: 1999-2016: Ohio Economic Development Association: Developed and
taught Economic Development Financing & Community Development Courses for the entry level course for certification for
Economic Development professionals.
 Current: Developed and teaches on the Basics of Economic Development for a wide range of economic development and
regional groups in Columbus, Cincinnati, and for, the Ohio Planning Conference, the Ohio Association of Community
Development Corporation, Buckeye Power/Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives and more.
 Current: Ohio CDC Association: The Association represents non-profit neighborhood and community based CDCs. Mark has
developed and currently teaches three courses to increase the professional skills of CDCs. including a 2-day course in Vacant
Structure Redevelopment, and 1 day courses in Neighborhood Real Estate Dealmaking, Collaboration, and Community
Economic Development.
 Current: International Economic Development Council (IEDC): IEDC is the association for economic development
professionals. IEDC provides a series of training courses to develop and enhance the skills of its members. Mark has taught
(and continues to teach) the Brownfield Revitalization, Real Estate Development Courses and the Neighborhood
Development of IEDC for seven years.
 Current: State Basic Economic Development Courses: IEDC certifies state courses for economic development professionals.
Each year, more than 30 state associations sponsor one-week basic courses are taught Mark Barbash has served as an
instructor in business financing and community development for the basic courses in the States of Colorado, Ohio,
Wisconsin, Indiana, Washington, Oklahoma, Michigan, Colorado and Kentucky. Mark has taught Finance and Community
Development at the Ohio Basic Course since 1992.
 2015: Inland Northwest Partners: Keynote Speaker at the Fall conference (September 17, 2015) of the Inland Northwest
Partners, the regional economic development collaboration representing development professionals in the States of
Washington and Idaho. Presentation and dialogue about the future of economic development, trends impacting the
industry, and strategies that work. (along with training session on value added economic development)
 2015: Wyandot County (Ohio) Economic Development Annual Dinner: Keynote speaker at November, 2015 annual
meeting of the Wyandot County economic development partnership. Spoke on Real World 21st

Development: Helping Your Community Stay on the Front Edge
 2015: County Commissioners Association of Ohio: The first County Commissioners Association of Ohio County Economic
Development Symposium, in June, 2015, was a unique opportunity to bring together key stakeholders from your county to
consider policy, practice and collaboration. For this course, developed and taught a course on the importance of Using Data
to Develop Community Development policy, that was a hands-on course for elected and appointed county officials in Ohio.

 2014: US Small Business Administration: Understanding Non-Profit Financial Statements for senior management of the
U.S. Small Business Administration. Between 1991 and 2000, taught intense courses in Lending the SBA Way for the SBA 504
loan program.
 2014: REAP (Real Estate Associate Program is the commercial real estate industry's leading diversity program bringing the
country's most talented minority professionals into the world of commercial real estate. Taught real estate development
and financing 2011-2014
 2013: Cincinnati USA: Keynote Address at 1st Annual CinciUSA Economic Development 101 Forum, January, 2013. The
forum was a half-day program designed to provide an advanced introduction to economic development for elected officials,
community and business leaders of the 15-county region located at the intersection of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana – called
Cincinnati USA. The Forum enabled participants to learn about available resources, strategic partnerships and development
issues affecting economic development within our community and how to best use scarce resources and most effectively
work together to grow our dynamic regional economy.
 2013: Wisconsin Conference on Economic Development: Keynote Speaker at 2013 Conference on Economic Development
in the New North....Wisconsin's Fox Valley. Speaking on "How to Find Money for Tough Development Deals."
 2001 - 2009: National Association of Development Companies (NADCO): NADCO is the trade association for SBA 504
Certified Development Companies. While a practitioner in the SBA 504 industry, Mark Barbash developed and taught a 2
day course in credit analysis designed for loan officers. The course used a case-study approach to analyze a business’
financials and project to make a loan decision. He was also an instructor for NADCO’s one week Basic 504 Course, which
trains loan officers in how the program operations.
 National Association of Development Organizations (NADO): Mark Barbash developed and taught several courses for
NADO, Including a two-day course “Establishing and Implementing a Revolving Loan Fund,” focusing on the practical
aspects of organizing a locally based business loan program; “Credit Analysis for Revolving Loan Funds” and “Practical Deal
Structuring for Revolving Loan Funds.”
 OU/Economic Development Institute: EDI is the professional certification course for development professionals. For EDI,
Mark Barbash taught courses in business financing, focusing on how the private lending market operates, how to analyze
business financials to determine creditworthiness and how to use public sector financing programs. He developed a two-day
intensive “advanced deal structuring” course which uses case study analysis to teach how to analyze and structure business
financing projects.
 National Business Incubation Association (NBIA): NBIA is the trade association for managers of business incubators in the
U.S. and internationally. Mark developed a one-day course in establishing a revolving loan fund for incubators that has
been taught at NBIA National Conferences.
 MicroEnterprise/Incubators: Mark Barbash developed and taught a course in MicroEnterprise Lending, for the State of
Washington Development Department. The course focused on the development and implementation of a comprehensive
program for MicroEnterprise Loan Program, including lending techniques, credit underwriting, technical assistance, and
program management. He also developed and taught a course in developing and implementing a Microloan Revolving Loan
Fund for the National Business Incubator Association.
 1981-1984: National Development Council: NDC is the national leader in development financing training. NDC sponsors a
series of one-week intensive training courses for economic development professionals in the areas of basic economic
development, credit analysis, real estate financing, and advanced deal structuring. During his four years with NDC, Mark
Barbash taught all courses.
