The immediate trigger was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist. This led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia and their ally Germany to back Austria, drawing in their enemies Russia, France and eventually Britain on the opposing side. The war became a bloody stalemate as new industrial weapons and trench warfare led to massive casualties with little movement in the front lines for years. When it ended in 1918 over 8 million soldiers had been killed making it one of the deadliest conflicts in history.
Vimy
The Battle of Vimy Ridge saw Canadian forces capture the ridge from German forces in April 1917, in a well-planned and executed operation. Through extensive preparation including rehearsals, artillery bombardment, and mining activities, the Canadians were able to take the heavily fortified ridge, which previous British and French attacks had failed to do. While the Canadians suffered over 10,000 casualties including 3,598 killed, they achieved a decisive victory that boosted Canadian pride and identity on the world stage. The capture of Vimy Ridge became a seminal moment in Canada's emergence as an independent nation.
Menin gate
Ypres was the site of 3 major battles during World War 1 and saw some of the heaviest fighting on the Western Front. It was where the first gas attack occurred and was the location of the battles of Passchendaele. Over 100,000 names are contained in the 3 cemeteries around Ypres that commemorate those who died in the battles, including the Menin Gate memorial and Tyne Cot Cemetery which contain 40,000 and 20,000 names respectively.
Illuminated manuscripts

1. Early humans originated in Eastern Africa around 200,000 years ago and the population was nearly wiped out around 75,000 years ago. Agriculture emerged around 8,000 years ago which led to permanent settlements and social hierarchies.
2. Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt were early civilizations that developed agrarian lifestyles around 8,000 years ago which allowed for specialization, larger settlements, and complex social structures.
3. Ancient Rome expanded from 500 BC to 500 AD, influencing modern governments, customs and languages. The Romans were renowned engineers who built extensive road networks, aqueducts and structures like the Colosseum and Pantheon.
The middle ages
The Medieval period in Europe began after the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD and lasted until around 1500 AD. This period saw the migration of Germanic tribes into Europe, the rise of the Catholic Church and feudal system of government. Significant events included the Crusades beginning in 1099 to retake the Holy Land from Muslim rule, and the Black Death pandemic in the mid-14th century that killed around one-third of Europe's population. By the end of the Medieval era, the foundations were being laid for the Renaissance and modern Europe through developments in trade, education and culture.
Remenbrance day 2018
Major (Retired) Steve Nagy will provide an overview of the First World War, including the key players and events leading up to the war as well as important monuments commemorating the conflict. He will discuss the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the series of diplomatic tensions and military mobilizations between European powers from July-August 1914 that sparked the war. This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the

- 6. Removal of the Internal Organs First the embalmers took a brain hook and stuck it up the nose and then began to stir the brain around. Then they would turn the body over and let the brain ooze out. A small incision was made on the side of the abdomen and someone would've reached in and pulled out the intestines, lungs, etc.
- 7. 4.) The body was then put into a naturally found salt called 'natron' 3.) The body was filled with a kind of stuffing made of linen, leaves and sawdust, so the body would look normal 5.) In about 40-50 days the body is taken out of the 'natron' and the original stuffing is replaced with a new one
- 8. 6.) The body was then covered in multiple layers of linen and special oils were placed on the body And then a final covering which is called a 'shroud' 7.) The finished mummy was then placed into a stone or wooden container called a 'sarcophagus'
