Introduction
Functionalism is one of the core perspectives of sociology. Sociology examines
the contexts in which people live and how these contexts affect them. In essence,
sociology examines the question of why the world is the way that it
is. Functionalism, along with conflict theory and interactionism, is one of the
major schools of sociological thought, examining society through a functional
framework which stresses that everything, no matter how seemingly strange, out of
place, or harmful, serves a purpose. The functionalist perspective evolved from the
work of Emile Durkheim, though it was shaped by Harvard sociologist Talcott
Parsons during the mid-20th Century. According to Bohm, functionalism can be
summed up with one simple premise: "the world is a system of interrelated parts,
and each part makes a necessary contribution to the vitality of the system."
Health club from functional Perspective:
In a health club people can rest assure to find the latest equipments and exercise
regimes . Spa and Sauna is one thing that you will not get in a gym. Health clubs
hire dedicated nutrition experts for its members. For a healthy workout people
need a diet that is rich in nutrients, and the experts will guide it. Compared to a
gym a health club is very relaxed. Sports are another benefit of a health club.
Sports are the best exercise. So, in a health club everybody can find various sports
that they can play. With the spread and popularity of yoga and meditation most
health clubs have added these on their list.

2. Manifest functions
The recognized and intended consequences of any social pattern are its manifest
Functions.
 Manifest functions of a health club:The manifest function of a health club is to improve the physical well-being of
those working out there. It is intended to be a place where people can come to
work-out, run, swim, do yoga/palates, or simply enjoy the sauna or steam room.
Other manifest functions include providing jobs for many people, making money
for the owners, and providing a service, open to the public (in most cases). An
open, stated function of some health clubs is to provide a safe environment for
youth to gather for organized events intended for others their age, In this case, for
children, socializing in an intended purpose if the health club.
Latent functions
Latent functions are the unrecognized and unintended consequences of any social
Pattern.
 Latent functions of a health club:On the other hand, socialization for adults at the health club is more of a latent
function. Other latent functions of a health club could be increased traffic
congestion around its' location. However, traffic congestion can be viewed as a
dysfunction rather than a function. More of a latent function would be a decrease in
healthcare costs and the resulting increased profits for the insurance industry.
