Twisted Gender Roles
Gender roles are consistently found in our society, within media, and in marketing procedures. In
Laurie Halse Anderson s fiction, Twisted, gender roles are constantly found and exchanged between
characters. Along with Twisted, Anderson s fiction, Speak, thoroughly exhibits gender roles. In
Twisted, Tyler goes through genderroles when he has to act like the typical tough male. In Speak,
Nicole breaks gender roles by being an athletic character. In these two novels they both heavily
show the roles of the two genders, and show what they go through. Gender roles are definitely
enforced by social expectations and the expectations people hold above themselves. Gender roles
are definitely enforced by social expectations and the expectations people hold above themselves.
To begin, gender roles are a common problem in our society that is heavily influenced by the
society s expectations and one s own expectations. In Tyler s bedroom on the first day of school,

feminine and not interested in sports. Nicole is extremely athletic, which is how she breaks out
of the female gender role. Nicole does not care about being hyper feminine, which is expected of
girls, meaning that they should care about what they do and how they should look while doing it.
Nicole is not concerned by any of this and completely breaks out of her role. Overall, while some
people stay within their role, Nicole is able to break out of it and be the person that she wants to

The Freedom Of Travelling On Horseback
To Arthur there was nothing like the freedom of travelling on horseback. The few times when he
sat in the car and watched Merlin steer their way across the countryside along the roads it felt
unsatisfying to him. The world passed by the windows too fast for Arthur to take in his new
surroundings. He needed to feel the elements around him, like the sun on his face or the wind
blowing into his hair as it did today. Here in the wide open air it smelled like humid soil, grass
and flowers. That was far better to him then the confined feel and the awful smell of the car. Not
to mention that he still did not trust the machine. It had the power to kill as far as he was
concerned, and it put the fear in him. For some reason he could not get passed the image of how
close he came losing Gwaine to one... Arthur steered his horse through known territory as fast as
he dared. The thrilling gallop made him feel alive again. In the last few hours he had felt more
like his old self than ever since he came to this century. This century... it still stunned him that so
much time had passed in a matter of what felt like days to him. The way Camelot got snapped
away from him in a blip of time made him feel as if part of his heart was ripped out. For his
entire life he had known nothing else than it. He fought for his people and protected it with every
fibre of his being. To be left without such a cause and without the love of his people, including his
friends, was just too much to bear at times.

Death And Violence During The Mahabharata And The Tale Of...
DEATH AND VIOLENCE IN THE MAHABHARATA AND THE TALE OF THE HEIKE
Death, and the process of dying and killing, is central to the plots of the ancient Indian
Mahabharata and the ancient Japanese Tale of the Heike. These epics, though the products of
different cultures, describe similar beliefs and practices regarding death, focusing on death in
relation to the religious beliefs and societal roles of the warriors classes the Vedic Kshatriyas
and the Japanese samurai. This great significance attached to death appears to act as a driving
force and justification behind many of the violent acts of war in these narratives. It can therefore
be argued that the belief in the cycle of death and rebirth, the acceptance of death as part of the
warrior identity, and the idea of dying honourably lead to the normalization of violence in both the
Mahabharata and the Tale of the Heike. Both epics show similar and overlapping religious beliefs;
specifically, the belief in the cycle of death and rebirth. This belief is used in various instances to
soften the significance of death and justify acts of violence which bring death. The conversation
between the warrior Arjunaand Krishna, an incarnation of the god Vishnu, in the Bhagavad Gita
highlight this. When Arjuna is reluctant to fight and kill his family members on the opposing side,
Krishna argues that, due to the cycle of death and rebirth, the act of killing is not as bad as it
seems. He asks That which is unborn and imperishable, how does

and The Fall of the City by Alden Nowlan
In The Possibility Of Evil by Shirley Jackson and The Fall of the City by Alden Nowlan, Miss
Strangeworth and Teddy experience the loss of their town as a secret is discovered. The
protagonist, Miss Strangeworth, in The Possibility of Evil portrays herself as a sweet and caring
old lady, though her exterior does not mimic her interior. Miss Strangeworth s one duty and job is
to rid her town of any possible evil. She believes she has power and status in her town. However,

Likewise, Teddy also has very high status and power as he is the ruler of the Kingdom of Upalia.
He is Majesty King Theodore I, resplendent in the red and black of a generalissimo where he
lives in a winter place in Theodoresburg, capital of the Kingdom of Upalia (Nowlan 130). Like
Miss Strangeworth, Teddy takes his role very seriously. Not only does he use complex military
words such as generalissimo , he also takes awhile to make his decisions. While he is eating
dinner, Teddy contemplated his choice, pondering on the tactics that he needs to use in relieving
the siege of the fort by the river (Nowlan 131). Teddy weighs the pros and cons and thinks about
what might happen, If the Upalian army crossed the Tabelian marches, they might succeed in
encircling the Danovans. On the other hand, if they scaled the Theodoran mountains ... [sic]

power, both Miss Strangeworth and Teddy take their roles in the town very seriously.
In contrast to Miss Strangeworth and Teddy s power and status in their towns, the respect and
value of voice in their own lives are unsimilar. Miss Strangeworth is highly respected in her life,
as she is quite old and carries wisdom. Everyone knows who she is and turns to wave while she is

This is done many times throughout the meal. In European style cuts are still made one at a time
but the fork stays in the left hand and the knife stays in the right. Taking a drink or getting a bite of
bread would be the only time the utensils would need to be put down while dining European
style. Soup is dipped from a 12 o clock position, drug across the rim, and brought to the mouth to
sip from the edge of the soup spoon. Between bites the soup spoon can be left in a shallow bowl
called a soup plate, but should be placed on the liner if the soup is served in a bowl or cup. When
finished with the main course the utensils should be placed in a 10:20 clock position on the

Pros And Cons Of Free Trade Essay
Pros and Cons of Free Trade I. Introduction Free trade, the ever present driving force behind our
national and world economy, is a trade policy embroiled in controversy. It is considered by most
economists to be an almost perfect trade policy, barring a few negative effects. Free trade has
been shown to increase production, output and income levels in an economy. However, there
are many people that view free trade as destroyer of economies and a catalyst of poverty. Critics
of free trade have pointed out that in the short run, free trade causes a loss of jobs which in turn
causes a rise in poverty levels. It is interesting to note that the argument for free trade and the
argument against free trade are inverses of each other. Proponents of free trade see it as a tool to
stimulate an economy while detractors see it as a policy which exacerbates poverty, causes
dependency and reduces economic stability. In general, there is no consensus on free trade.
Economists see free trade as the devil that we know. While imperfect, it is the best we have to
work with. Popular opinion sees free trade as a cause of inequality. Even though it alleviates
poverty and causes economic stimulation in the long run, it can cause the exact opposite in the
short run. The pros and the cons of free trade must then be weighed, which will then allow us to
determine if free trade is truly a beneficial trade policy. Therefore, this discussion will weigh the
benefits and harms of free trade and will

Locke’s Qualities vs. Berkeley’s Idealism
Locke s Qualities vs. Berkeley s Idealism In the modern period of philosophy, around the 16th and
17th century, after the fall of Rome and the rise of the dark years, three major events had occurred.
The first began with the scientific revolution, where many philosophers were becoming scientist,
such as the philosopher of science Francis Bacon. The next event was the resurgence of skepticism,
where one questions everything until they discover the truth. For instance, the philosopher famous
for saying the phrase Cogito, ergo sum, (translated as I think, therefore I am) was the skeptic Rene
Descartes, who came up with this quote by doubting everything until there was nothing else to
doubt except doubting. The final altering event in the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Berkeley describes there is no principle difference between the two qualities, for instance he
states that a secondary quality corresponds to primary qualities because secondary qualities are
characteristics that one cannot imagine an object existing without it, such as one cannot come up
with an idea of a colorless shape. Another example that Berkeley points out is how people
perceive qualities. Locke explains that secondary qualities are observed differently to different
people. Berkeley finds this can be the same for primary qualities, such as two people looking at a
triangle from different angles will have different perceptions of the shape. As a result, Berkeley
finds that if one thinks secondary qualities exist only in the mind of the observer and one is
convinced by his explanation of there being no distinction between the two qualities, then one
would also conclude that primary qualities exist only in the mind of the observer. http:/

and Aunt Myra for several months. The couple helped George in his academics and taught him
his multiplication tables as he was going to the fifth grade. In the fall of George s junior year of
high school, his father Fred suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. His condition severely affected his
speech and soon afterwards his business went down. This took an emotional toll on Fred, who

George s mother still worked at the boutique store. Money was tight and George s uncle began

Essay about Book Summary The Bible Among the Myths
INTRODUCTION
The book opens with an introduction comparing the study of the Old Testament and the other
religions and cultures of other peoples from the Ancient Near East. Scholars used to believe that the
Old Testament was unique among other beliefs in the Ancient Near East but they now view the Old
Testament as identical to other religions of its day and time.
The author also discusses the vital philosophical distinction between essence and accident. When
removing an essential feature of an object, it will cease to be itself but if you remove an
accidental feature of an object, there will be no change in the object s essential being.
The author also introduces the characteristics of myth.

One of the groups of definitions falls under the category of the historical philosophical definition.
The first definition of myth in this category is the etymological definition. This definition stresses
the falsity of the deity or event or thing being described. The second is the sociological theological
definition where the truth is seen as relative and something is considered true if it is seen as true
by others. The third is the literary definition. These kinds of definitions claim to make no value
judgment about their material. The events are not seen as right or wrong and the narrative makes
use of symbolism to express it meaning.
The many definitions of a myth have one thing in common; they all give to the philosophy of
continuity. Continuity assumes that all things are not only related to one another, but are literally
one another in some fashion. Overall it can be said that whatever the Bible is, whether symbol or
literal, true or false, it is not myth.

CONTINUITY: THE BASIS OF MYTHICAL THINKING

Literary Techniques Used In Eudora Welty s A Worn Path
Today we will be talking about the different literary references used throughout Eudora Welty s A
Worn Path . I will explain and decode different techniques used by the author throughout her story.
The story is of an old southern African American woman, named Phoenix Jackson, making her way
into to town to pick up her grandsons medication from the doctor s office. But this is no normal old
woman. She cannot see and is picking her way with a cane to make her way across a barrage of
obstacles. Throughout her journey she comes upon different characters and situations, from these
events we will draw our interpretations of the symbolism embedded within the tale. The first thing I
thought about after finishing the story was how routine... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When she arrives at the doctors office she is greeted first by a grumpy front desk receptionist,
then a nice nurse who is familiar when Phoenix approaches her. The nice nurse assures the front
desk receptionist that Phoenix is there to pick up her grandsons medication. As she and the
nurse chat, Phoenix s old age starts to play a factor when she loses her train of thought while the
nurse asks on the condition of the grandson. As phoenix walks into town, she asks a random
woman on the street to tie her shoe. Thank you missy. I doesn t mind asking a nice lady to tie my
shoe when I gets on the street , (A Worn Path, 1280) this could be a continuation of the
representation of the child old woman analogy that I described earlier in the essay. As she finds
her way into town, she finds her way to the doctor s office, she then makes a conversation with
the nurse and tells her, We is the only two left in the world. He suffers and it don t seem to put
him back at all. He got a sweet look. He going to last. He wear a little patch quilt and peep out
holding his mouth open like a little bird. I remember so plain now. I not going to forget him
again, no, the whole enduring time. I could tell him from all the others to creation (A Worn Path,

Discuss how the leadership talent pipeline at Ecolab was critical to executing its business strategy.
The CEO and executives got together and came up with a strategy that grows the company. They
had to capitalize on success to capture greater share in markets. What this mean is they had to go
a step higher than where the company currently stands. I think because they don t want to get
comfortable and stuck and can t grow. They also are looking for new opportunities for the
company to expand. With this being said they are trying to develop a broader range of cleaning and

new associates who would be necessary to lead the workforce would be a critical element.
Basically they were preparing for the growth of the company by making sure the management team
and leaders. So they had to promote within the company and then bring in new employees to
train. They would also hire from outside the company but why do that if you have qualified
individuals at the company. It will cost less and probably be more beneficial to the company. b.
Expanding recruiting efforts which was usually done by the HR department. If they are expanding
they know they are going to have to use their resources because they want to make sure they are
hiring the best of the best. c. Redefining high potential was also a critical element. They aren t just
basing it on the performance but on capability, ambition and commitment. Just because they
perform their jobs well doesn t mean they could take on the new roles. d. Talent council is basically
the CEO and executive that s watching and seeing who is growing. They are pushing the managers
so they can continue to push employees which will continue to grow the business.

Pros And Cons Of School And Prison
Rooted in the strict controlling environment created by an old and aging public school system the
school to prison pipeline is a path many students in the United States will face. School and prison
are so similar students who go through the system will stay in the system. From dress codes to
hours, what is and isn t allowed schools and prisons are so similar it makes sense that there is a
pathway connecting them. Both impede on the liberty promised by the government and create a
circle of manipulation and control. The United Statespublic school system impedes on the liberty
promised to the citizens of the United States of America and has been since the beginning. The
public school system started as a way to remove children from the streets during the day and to
educate them. The reason for the young to be educated was only so they would be usable for the
workforce when they were older. Later the bells and switching of classes were introduced. The
bells are similar to the ones that represent the bells in a factory. Switching of classes, the assembly
line. As time passes more and more restrictions were placed on the students attending schools.
Rules were made and the freedom of the students was imposed on for insurance and money
purposes. Adults control everything the students do. This control prohibits the fulfillment of Life,
Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Start with Life. Let s say this is life as in biological terms.

Short Story On Bully
Have a great day Zoe! says my bus driver, the nicest person that I know, as I get up from my seat on
the bus.
I ll try, I say gloomily. I know today will be a day just like all the other 45 days (yes I am counting)
that I have been at this school. Not great.
My family and I moved to California from New York a couple of months ago for my dad s job. My
whole family loves it here, except for me. I would love it here if it wasn t for Jess Mitchel. She is
your typical high school bully that wants to make every girl s life miserable. Being the new girl
of the school makes me her next victim. Jess usually does most of her tormenting at the courtyard
in front of our school, where everyone hangs out and all of the buses unload. As soon as I step off
of the bus, the taunting begins.
Oh my gosh! What is she wearing! Jess yells loudly, causing everyone s attention to be drawn to
me. Where does she get her clothes from? Goodwill? Jess s partner in crime stood beside Jess,
laughing at me. I try to walk as quickly as I can into the school, without making a fool of myself.
But, I should have known that wouldn t be possible with Jess Mitchel around.
I had almost made it into the school, when my worst nightmare happened. The partner in crime
stuck her shoe, a cheetah printed Louboutin high heel, out and tripped me. I was so humiliated that
I had no idea how to react. I glance up to see everyone staring at me.
Don t cry. Stay strong, I repeat in my head. I stand up and finish the few steps that it takes for me
to get into the school.
Thankfully, I do not have any classes with Jess, so I do not see her often during the day. But sadly,
I do have lunch with her. I was able to go through my morning classes without anyone mocking me,
just some slight stares from everyone.
Today s lunch is no different than any other day. I sit by myself at a table in the back corner. Jess
sits near the front of the lunchroom with the cheer team and of course, her partner in crime. Jess
tells jokes about me to her lunch table, the girls laughing at the jokes whether they are funny or not.
Then, Jess stands up, holding her lunch. She starts walking to a place that she would never have
been caught dead in before today. The back

Music Is The Genre Of Music
The modern day person encounters a plethora of genres in their everyday life. Whether going to
the grocery store or watching television, people are surrounded by the genres of branding, music,
twitter posts, Facebook statuses, and so much more. While it is true that we are impacted by the
world of genre around us each day, it is also true that many people do not know what genre is.
Genre is the expression of people s thoughts, ideas, or emotions, towards a target audience, that
can be separated into categories depending on how one chose to express these things. There are
numerous different types of genre that can be found in the world, but the most influential to
myself is the genre of music. Music is everywhere, it comes in millions of different forms, and is
the one thing nobody can really go a day without because it is such a common part of modern
day life. Everyone has their own style of music they like to listen to, play, sing, or do whatever
to as music can be applied and found in almost every situation. With such a powerful influence,
music is always changing with the world around us to be connected to the modern era of life. In
2016, its clear that the music of our generation is not swing, or classical, or blues music, but
rather pop and rap. As rap has taken off, genre has needed to expand, and thus today there are two
types of rap, each with similar styles but both conveying different messages, idea, and motive, those
being traditional rap and anti rap, or

The Adventures Of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck Essay
Dating back to 1841, modern comics have had a long history. Since The Adventures of Mr.
Obadiah Oldbuck, which is generally accepted as the first American comic, comics as a genre of
literature has changed both technologically and in perception (Greenberger). Throughout American
history, comics have served as both an influence and a reflection of the time period. As America
grew, changed, and experienced major historical events, society and the ideas within changed along
with it.
Many comic historians cite Genovese author and painter Rodolph Töpffer as the first modern
comic artist ( Comics Theory ). Töpffer is the author of a comic titled Histoire de M. Vieux
Bois, which was published in 1839. This was eventually translated in 1841 to the first American
comic The Adventures of Mr. Obidiah Oldbuck (Greenberger). Though this was the first comic
published in America, it cannot be said to reflect American history very well since it was not
originally written in America. Instead, it was first published in Europe before gaining widespread
popularity in the United States (Töpffer 2014).
Years later in 1894, the first significant recurring comic stripcharacter The Yellow Kid debuted
(Greenberger). Created by Richard Outcault, The Yellow Kid was seen as the beginning of the
Funnies , the name given to comic strips in newspapers at the time ( Comic Theory ). His debut led
to an explosion of merchandising, culminating in the publication of a collection of comic strips in
1897.

Nike Ajax Research Paper
The Rise of the Surface to Air Missile The Soviet Union s ballistic missiles and long range
bombers became a great threat to the United States of America, after tensions between the two
intensified, following World War II. The US was afraid that the Soviet Union would attack and
there would be no war fighting equipment available to intercept the threat. (Nike, n.d) The
North American Air Defense Command developed the Nike Ajax, which stood as a high altitude
defense system. It was the last line of air defense, which was beneficial because it extended
America s level of protection. As time passed, there was a need for a more powerful, faster and
bigger missile. As a result, the US created the new and improved Nike Hercules missile, which
began replacing the Nike Ajax missiles. (Bender, 2004) The evolution of the first surfaced to air

The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Henry VIII 1509-1515 Essay
The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Henry VIII 1509 1515
There are many differing views of Henry VIII, some people see him as a scholar and others as a
jovial and merry king. Each of these opinions views different characteristics of Henry VIII that
contributed to his strengths and weaknesses. Henry, when he succeeded the throne had several
problems that he had to address. There was also much expectation of him as his father had been
viewed as a miser and a repressor and people saw the need for dramatic change. Ian Dawson says
that at the change of monarch there was a sense of breaking free from imprisonment so much was
the relief of Henry VIII s succession.
One of the most obvious strengths ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows how much his allegiance was valued on the continent. Also helping his foreign policy
was after much debate of who he would marry the marriage of his brother s widow Catherine of
Aragon and himself. This helped secure ties with the Spanish. His sister Mary was married to the
king of France in 1514.
Henry had no intention of giving the nobles back power so another strength he had was that he
was an all powerful figure. Prof. Ronald Hutton says he managed the nobility by honouring and
flattering them . Henry went through Parliament to get reforms when he wanted them. By doing
this he increased power of democracy as well as for himself. The early years of Henry s reign saw
great rivalry amongst the noblemen to secure Henry s favour and to try to regain power, which
Henry VII had taken away. They saw the opportunity of manipulating the new king into restoring
what they had had.
Henry was a dominating person which helped him fit into a kingly image, he was much taller
than was average at the time and was muscular too giving the idea of him being strong. He was
always trying to impress people, particularly foreign ambassadors, chiefly by his lavish court and
rich life style. Dawson says he would play the part of a warrior hero . He did this by war and
leading his troops to battle in France. Also he was seen as a scholar and an intellectual that was a

Revolt Of The Homosexual Analysis
In his published 1968 article printed by the Village Voice, Seymour Krim s, Revolt of the
Homosexual, converses with a fictitious straight guy to reduce the preconceived notions of the
life of homosexuals, and insisted that it is a natural behavior. This was a bold action considering
that homosexuality at the time was considered an aberration or a disease. He challenged the
theory that being gay is a sickness, and he desired a right for all homosexuals to not be
criminalized, as long as it does not conflict actual harm on another person. Basically, he demands a
simple human right , and believes that if the oppression continues then homosexuals will gradually
start to stand against it because they are tired of having to hide just like how... Show more content

For example, some people believe that lesbians are not a real sex experience because there is no
phallus involved. This translates to the idea that there needs to be a man and a woman, or aka, the
dominant and the submissive. Therefore, women cannot emulate masculinity only a man can
assume that role. Not even butch lesbian women could mirror that aspect, and if a woman were to
claim that feature then they were pretending to be man. Therefore, a stigma gets attached to
lesbian relationships, and renders the butch as a less desirable being. While in the 19th century
Butch Femme was a more prominent trend in lesbian relationships, it does not translate to today s
times (Smith and Stillman). In itself, this occurrence may be a revolt, and may be one of the main
contributions to the lightening of homosexual views as revolting . On the one hand, common
lesbians are stereotypically viewed as obese, short haired, and ugly women. On the other hand,
with the rise of online dating apps, especially for the homosexuals, more attractive women are
gradually coming out to shed the image of the stereotypical lesbian. Consequently, lesbian women
are demeaned as only something physically appealing to look at by others, as observed by the
considerable porn websites like Pornhub categorizing lesbian porn under a straight category.
Likewise, while female body issues are in general more prominent in the media than men, males are
experiencing increasing pressures to attain a certain

Fiber Optics
Fiber optics is a cable that is quickly replacing out dated copper wires. Fiber optics is based on a
concept known as total internal reflection. It can transmit video, sound, or data in either analog
or digital form . Compared to copper wires it can transmit thousands of times more data (slide 2)
. Some of its general uses are telecommunications, computing, and medicine. br br The very first
fiber was made in 1870 by the British physicist John Tyndal. In this experiment that he showed to
the Royal Society he placed a powerful waterproof lamp inside a tank of water, which had closed
pipes coming out the sides. When he opened up the pipes so water could flow, to the amazement of
the crowd, the light totally internally reflected inside... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you want a short range network without monstrous bandwidth needs, you can save money and
get the multimode. On the other hand, if you want a large network with a large bandwidth, you
will need to fork out the money for the singlemode. br br Fiber optic cable is constructed with an
industry standard with respect to that the cladding on all cable, whether single or multimode,
must be 125 mm. (slide 8) This is done so the same tools can be used for both types of cables.
Fiber cables are also bunched, much like their copper counterparts are. Individual cables are
called simplex, double cables are called duplex, and four cables wrapped together are quadplex.
Wires with more than four cables are also available. Some of the possible ones are groups of
twelve, thirty six, and forty eight. br br Another important aspect of fiber optics is attenuation,
which is decrease in power from one point to another. (Slide 9) Attenuation is measured in dB
/km and a 3.0 dB/km loss corresponds to about a 50% loss in 1 km. One of the major advantages
of fiber over copper is lower attenuation. Copper wires need repeaters about every three miles, but
fiber can go without a repeater for sixty miles. br br There are two types of attenuation: intrinsic
and extrinsic. One of the two types of intrinsic attenuation is scattering, which makes up about 96%
of the intrinsic. This is caused by Rayleigh scattering in which light rays collide with atoms in the

300 to 450 words on conflict and conflict management. Record your answers in this worksheet.
Part 1: The Five Conflict Types Describe each of the five conflict types using paragraph form. 1.
Pseudo conflicts: Psueudo conflicts, are conflicts that are not real, but they are only perceived as
real conflicts. Pseudo conflicts can result from two causes: faulty assumptions, and false dilemmas.

3. Ego conflicts: Ego conflicts occur when a dispute settles on status or power. The initial
arguments may be over some factual question that can be easily answered. However, the ego
conflict results when you argue who has the right facts. The question of which Republican had
the most votes during the presidential election becomes who knows more about politics. 4.
Value conflicts: Value conflicts focus on personal beliefs that you hold near and dear. Value
conflicts usually surface in personal relationships. For example, my boyfriend and I have been
dating for 6 months. We have discussed marriage with children. I am Catholic and he is a non
denominational Christian. When we discuss marriage, he constantly reminds me that he doesn t
believe in Catholicism. I am a practicing Catholic, he is not a practicing Christian. We have both
decided that eventually we will come to a compromise where both of our religious needs will be
met. 5. Need conflicts: Need conflicts usually occur when the needs of one individual are at odds
with the needs of another. For example, when you begin cooking Thanksgiving dinner for your
family and friends, and you begin a brand new recipe that requires your undivided attention so that
your measurements are precise; your cellular phone rings and your 6 month old wakes up from his
nap. Need conflicts are easily resolved by redefining or

The Prison System Is Not Functioning Well
It has long been apparent that the UK s current prison system is not functioning well. Although
the HM Prison Service outline their purpose as we keep those sentenced to prison in custody,
helping them lead law abiding and useful lives, both while they are in prison and after they are
released (Gov.uk, 2016), currently nearly half of all prisoners go on to re offend within a year,
which costs society ВЈ15 billion a year (Ministry of Justice, 2016). In addition, last summer, the
Chief Inspector of Prisons warned that jails in England and Waleswere in their worst state for a
decade (HM Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales, 2015) with sharp rises in inmate
violence, increasing drug use, staff shortages and squalid conditions. Therefore there is no doubt
that the prisonsystem is in urgent need of reform.
Last month, Elizabeth Truss outlined planned reforms to the prison system in a government
proposal, Prison Security and Reform she labelled the blueprint for the biggest overhaul of our
prisons in a generation . She outlined plans for a governor led approach, in which prison
governors will have the power to opt out of national contracts, and make their own resource
allocation decisions. Six reform prisons with these features are already being trialled around the
country, but it is too early to judge their impact. (Ministry of Justice, 2016). Autonomy is expected
to empower staff, improve standards and lead to a reduction in reoffending. The idea came from

There s No Such Thing As By John C. Maxwell Essay
There s No Such Thing as Business Ethics is a book written by John C. Maxwell. The book was
first published in 2003 by First Warner Books. Maxwell is a well known expert in leadership and
highly desired public speaker. The title of this book may leave one wondering about what Maxwell
is trying to say with his book title. Is he saying all business is corrupt and without ethics? Or is he
saying that ethics are not a requirement of business situations? The answer is no, Maxwell is
expressing neither of those ideas. The author uses this title as an attention grabber. Maxwell is
actually saying, and he enforces this idea throughout the book, that there is only ethics. There is
no separate category for business ethics or personal ethics. It is simply ethics. The entire book is
centered on The Golden Rule and how the rule should apply to business and personal situations.
Maxwell uses stories, experiences and even religion to deliver his message on ethics. I, like many
others, was drawn to this book because of the title. The title almost seems to give permission to be
unethical, brushing off ethics as if it were nothing. This surprising title left me wondering about its
true meaning. Is this published author really successful with this type of approach to ethics? For
me, the title has a negative implication that required further investigation. My investigation was
short. Maxwell explains in a short preface the story behind the title. He explains in one simple
sentence.

The Physics Of Atomic Theory

countless scientists involved in the evolution of atomic theory, but less than 50 have majorly

Discovery and experimentation on the atom first began in the Greek Era with scientists as old as

important tables in the history atomic development. He arranged the atoms into 7 groups with
similar properties, and published his first periodic table of elements. Not only did it organize
things tremendously, but also allowed Mendeleev to predict new elements. After him in 1873,
came James Clerk Maxwell who proposed that electric and magnetic fields filled the void. Six
years later in 1879, Sir William Crookes made an enormous discovery... He studies the effects of
sending and electric current through a gas in a sealed tube. This electrode was called a cathode
and the particles were cathode rays. He discovered that cathode rays travel in straight lines from
the cathode; cause glass to fluoresce; are deflected by electric fields and magnets to suggest a
possible negative charge; cause pinwheels in their path to spin showing they have mass. In 1896
while studying the effect of x rays on photographic film, Henri Becquerel discovered some
chemicals spontaneously decompose and give off very penetrating rays. He exposed potassium
uranyl sulfate to sunlight, believing that uranium absorbed the sun s energy and emitted it as x
rays. This hypothesis was considered to be a failure because it was overcast in Paris, however
Becquerel developed his plates anyways and the images were still clear! This proved

The Battle of Waterloo and its Effect on Today s Artillery
Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the world s greatest military strategists, led the French at the Battle of
Waterloo. During his time as a General, even in defeat, his tactics in the way he used artillery were
beyond reproach. His successes and errors made throughout the Battle of Waterloo had a direct
effect on how we use artillery today.

the impending Prussian arrival, he decided to send 20,000 troops, to his left flank, to intercept the
Prussians. Although, this was a sensible approach, it severely weakened the main attack. The
French finally push through and took La Haye Sainte (the estate in the center of the Battlefield)
but, this would end up being a small victory in a battle that would have an inevitable outcome. The
British retreated their men, behind the ridge, in an attempt to hide them from the French
viewpoint. The French, thinking they had the British on their heels, sent their elite soldiers (Old
Guard) up the middle of the battlefield and over the ridge. Unknowingly to the French, Duke
Wellington hatched a plan to hide some of his troops. As the Old Guard begins its assault, of the
British center line, they are surprised by British troops lying in wait, on their flanks, in the high
corn fields. The Old Guard is routed by three horse batteries attacking their flanks. With the
Prussian Army destroying the left flank of the French Army, Wellington sounds the general charge.
The charge is successful in pushing back the French lines. Napoleon regroups his Old Guard and
orders them to attack. By this time, the Old Guard is down to under 200 men. Once again,

Descartes Dreaming Argument
The topic of this essay is Descartes First Meditations and I will be discussing in detail the Dreaming
argument and the Evil Demon argument.
According to Descartes , As I think about this more carefully, I see plainly that there are never any
sure signs by means of which being awake can be distinguished from being asleep. This is the
fundamental principle of the Dreaming Argument. The scenarios in which we experience whilst we
are asleep are comparable to the scenarios we experience whilst we are awake. Often, we struggle
to tell from our own perspective where our experiences are derived from; it is difficult to
differentiate whether our experiences stem from reality or our dreams. The issue with this is that
our unconscious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be challenged as to sit in a lecture you must be certain that you re sitting in a lecture, but
you cannot be certain that you are not actually dreaming, therefore you cannot be certain that you
re sitting in a lecture. P2 there is no way to be certain that the experiences we perceive to be reality
are our reality. Descartes argues that there is no way that we can be completely certain that such
experiences are not unconscious experiences, Any experience that strikes me as waking experiences
such that I am perceiving the environment in a normal way are indistinguishable from possible
dreaming experiences.
An objection to this argument is that we can distinguish being awake and being asleep. If we
can remember our dreams once we are awake, we can recognise them as dreams as they
generally don t make sense which differs from our logical conscious experiences. Dreams are
usually only coherent for a short period of time which is a distinct difference from being awake.
Once we are conscious, even our most vivid unconscious experiences can be recognised as
dreams. Your waking experiences can be intensely recalled whereas you do not always remember
your unconscious experiences. I believe that this is a weak argument because sometime struggle to
fully distinguish between reality and our dreams as our unconscious experiences are
overwhelmingly intense and life like.

However, sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a few kids in
school might try to get you to cut class with them or a kid in the neighborhood might want you
to vandalize with him. A powerful negative peer influence can motivate a teen to make choices
and engage in behavior that his or her values might otherwise reject. Teens who feel isolated or
rejected by their peers or in their family are more likely to engage in risky behaviors in order to fit
in with a group.
But why do kids give in to peer pressure? Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to
be liked, to fit in, or because they worry that other kids may make fun of them if they don t go
along with the group. The need for acceptance, approval, and belonging is vital during the teen

The idea that everyone s doing it may influence some kids to leave their better judgment, or their

Child Protective Service began asking questions and drove out to the compound to investigate.
The investigation never found any wrong doing by Koresh, however, their concern was the gun

Given the tumultuous political environment in Colombia during this period, it may come as a
surprise that a third round of peace talks commenced in 1998. The FARC, having reached its peak
during this time, was waging an all out insurgency against the state. The push for peace came at the

Objective Meaning
Many people walk around not worry about whether or not life has any objective meaning, at least
most of the time, and when they do think on the topic of the meaning of life, they seem assured
that there is some objective meaning. For many, this objective meaning lies in their religion. The
notion that God creates the meaning in life does make some sense. For if God created humans, it is
reasonable that he created them with intention and purpose. Now this might not be the purpose
people want to have, but it is purpose for them none the less. It is from this God given purpose that
people can derive their meaning. For those without religion, well, there is always subjective
meaning. There is family. There is the future of the human race. In short,... Show more content on

The existence of God is beyond the scope of this paper. However, if God does not exist, and life
has no meaning, that doesn t mean life has to be miserable. There are many wholesome things
one can find joy in. People can actually enjoy their jobs. Many people really do value their
distractions. People can find joy in the company of others. People can even find joy in helping
each other. Why not donate to Unicef? Why not volunteer? Still, people want meaning in their
lives, and they find things to get their meaning out of. Most of the time, the things people try to
get meaning from are very admirable, but this doesn t change the fact, that life without God, is
meaningless. It may feel better to say that one s meaning to life is trying to improve human quality
of life, and hopefully, these people succeed in their quest. However, as a meaning to life it doesn t
really stand to

The Word Iconoclasm In The Byzantine Empire
The Word Iconoclasm refers to the destruction of images or hostility towards visual
representations in general. This word more specifically is used for the iconoclastic Controversy
that shook the Byzantine Empire for more than 100 years. The Hostility towards religious
representations began in 726 when Emperor Leo publicly opposed the icons. The word icon
refers to many different things today. It can refer to graphic symbols in our software and to
powerful cultural figures. (Dr. Davor Dzalto). However, the original meaning comes from the
Greek meaning for image. In the medieval era, it meant a religious image on a wooden panel used
for prayer and devotion. More specifically, icons came to typify the art of the Orthodox Christian
Church.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another theory suggests that the prohibition was an attempt to keep the growing wealth and power
of the monasteries. They produced the icons and used them as a primary target of the violence of
the Iconoclastic Controversy. Others say the prohibition was religious, and an attempt to correct the
right practice of worshiping images. Leo the third s prohibition may have been because of the huge
volcanic eruption in 726, thought to have happened because of God s anger over the dedication of
the icons. The original theological basis for iconoclasm was weak, they relied mostly on the Old
Testament prohibition. But it was clear that it was not absolute because God gave instructions on
how to make a three dimensional Cherubim for the Ark of the Covenant, which was quoted in the
Old Testament, a couple of chapters after the passage that prohibits images. Emperor Constantine V
gave a slightly different theological approach for iconoclasm. He claimed, He claimed that each
visual representation of Christ necessarily ends in a heresy since Christ, according to generally
accepted Christian dogmas, is simultaneously God and man, united without separation, and any
visual depiction of Christ either separates these natures, representing Christ s humanity alone, or

How Did The Great Leap Forward And The Cultural Revolution
The research engages with the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, two significant
and defining events in Chinese history since the establishment of the People s Republic of China.
The Great Leap Forward (1957 60) was a Chinese economic plan initiated by Mao Zedong aimed at
revitalizing all sectors of the economy. Wildly unrealistic planning poorly planned communization
of agriculture, and a poor harvest in 1959 caused mass starvation. Mao was forced to turn
government administration over to Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping. His popularity diminished
severely and thus launched the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolutionto regain his popularity.
The Cultural Revolution (1966 76) was the mass mobilization of urban Chinese youth inaugurated
by Mao Zedong in an attempt to prevent the development of a bureaucratized Soviet style of
Communism. Mao closed schools and encouraged students to join Red Guard units, which ... Show

democracy. This coupled with the copious allowance for free speech, in the Chinese regard, during
the Cultural Revolution and its devastating aftermath which remained potent in the lives of many
individuals lead many Chinese to lose faith in their government altogether. This loss of faith and
potency of unsavoury memories may have pushed many Chinese to look towards a better political
and social systemп‚ѕa democratic one. Chinese society was avidly propagandistic. The aim to
maintain a strong communist hold on Chinese society through press and censorship reform had the
opposite effect, even subsequently having to be crushed. Thus the events of the Great Leap
Forward and the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution can be regarded as considerable forces that
influenced the Tiananmen Movement and thus its consequent

The Positive Effects Of The Black Death
Everything gets worse before it gets better. A bruise turns into a gaudy green pigment before it
fully heals; a rainstorm sends hail falling from the sky, impaling anything it sees, right before a
beautiful rainbow appears; the red fleshed pimple on one s face continues to grow bigger and
bigger until it spontaneously disappears. A catastrophe can lead to success and hope, much like the
Black Deathleads to the Renaissance. The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics
that resulted in one third of europe s population to die. Despite all the death and evil the Black
Death brought, it has a good outcome The Renaissance. The Black Death was the catalyst of the
European Renaissance because of the effects it had on the European economy, artistic
expression, and technological advances. The Black Death affected the European economy in a
positive way. The biggest change, good for peasants, was the end of Feudalism. Feudalism is a
social triangle that decided who obeyed who and many other unfair standards for all Serfs, the
base of the pyramid. Due to the huge population deficit, Serfs were scarce and Barons were now
willing to pay higher wages and offer extra benefits. All their life they had lived off the serfs hard
work, and were willing to pay them to stay on the manor to continue slaving for them (Vunguyen).
This gave the Serfs more power to ask for higher wages and the freedom to find more work if they
do not get what they want. Serfs, or peasants, began

Use Of A Personal Identity Versus A Social Identity
The current post industrialized society s economy could be described as information and
service based, with the most profit being awarded to businesses and individuals who can
capitalize on the novel needs of a constantly evolving youth population. Some of the most
successful businesses are social media powerhouses, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
These business are the ones that are able to change as quickly as their target audiences, with
tweaks to application functions being pushed through app stores on mobile devices. This paper
will focus on the primarily mobile platform, Instagram, and how it has affected the modern
concept of a personal identity versus a social identity. Instagram is an image based social media
platform mainly used by young persons under the age of 34 (Statista). Its launch in 2010 (Geoff)
originally offered a relatively simple interface, allowing users to post only perfectly square
pictures of a certain size. They eventually expanded to 15 second video clips in 2013 (Taylor),
and in 2016 introduced a Stories feature (Bradford), which allows users to post images and
videos to a personal Story that disappears after 24 hours have elapsed. These changes and updates
came at the request of users, and the observed success of other business models. Because of the
post for likes nature of the platform, many users feel compelled to gear their posts to certain
demographics or populations they post what they think is going to be most

Abortion Legal Case
Since the proper to non public privacy includes the abortion call, however the proper isn t
unqualified and should be thought about against vital state interests in regulation.
The abortion laws in result within the majority of the States square measure of comparatively recent
vintage, account from statutory changes typically enacted within the latter half the nineteenth
century. At common law abortionperformed before quickening (the initial recognizable movement
of the vertebrate in utero) wasn t an guilty offense, and it s uncertain that abortion was ever a
firmly established common law crime even once it destroyed a fast vertebrate.
Three reasons are advanced for the historical enactment of criminal abortion laws. the primary is
that the laws square measure the merchandise of a Victorian social concern to discourage illicit
sexual conduct, however this argument has been taken seriously by neither courts nor
commentators. The second reason is that the abortion procedure is risky, thus the State s concern is
to safeguard pregnant ladies. However, fashionable medical techniques have altered matters, with
abortions being comparatively safe notably within the trimester. The third reason is that the State s
interest is in protective the antenatal life. However, this can be somewhat negated by the actual fact
that the pregnant lady can not be prosecuted for the act of abortion.

Examples Of My Home Culture
Has my home culture prepared me for work life culture?
Power tools are the use of coercion, threats, punishment, and any other means necessary to

well as in a corporation. In my parents house, this was there go to choice when me and my
siblings were out of line. It would usually start off with a series of threats. When threats were not
taken seriously, it would be followed by immediate punishment. From, How Will You Measure

from my home culture are dependable, integrity, and perseverance. Being dependable is a great trait
for my work life culture. It was established through a series of constant responsibility placed on
me by my parents. My eldest brother was always at work, and would not get back till early in the

The Causes And Cons Of Jewish Groups In Jesus
Jewish Groups 1 In Jesus time, there were many religious and social groups who opposed His
teachings. When we read these types of confrontations with Jesus we automatically envision these
groups as evil people when in reality they weren t at all. In this report, we will study and analyze
the main religious groups that were present during Jesusera and why they might have disagreed
with Him. 2 The Phariseeswere one group of people that had difficulties and problems with Jesus
teachings. The Pharisees were ultra Orthodox men who shunned the unrighteous and made up many
rules on how to be holy. There were two main groups of Pharisees the Shammai and the Hillel. The
Shammai believed that only the Jews were loved by God and that Gentiles shouldn t convert to
Judaism. Because of this belief, the Shammai grew to hate the Gentiles and even made edicts so
that the two were separated. The Shammai is also known to have political ties and a close
relation to the zealots who wanted to overthrow Rome. The second and less influential groups of
Pharisees were the Hillel which focused more on people as opposed to rules. They were much
more open to Gentile converts and Jesus acted more positively with this group than the other. The
potential conflicts of these groups would be when Jesus would heal someone on the Sabbath the
Shammaiites would see this as Jesus doing work on the Sabbath while the Hillelites would see this
as a good deed which was permitted on the Sabbath. Another point

Peer Review of Writing in Process
1. The point of this essay was to reflect over the personalities and situations of the characters in a
different point of view. To make the point clearer, I would not use excessive words and be
straightforward.
2. The strongest aspect of this essay was that the author really puts their selves into the characters
position and reflects over the situation in another point of view. A quote from the essaythat proves
this aspect is: Honestly, if I were in Joanna s position I would be very offended, because in my

something that is beyond rare, especially for that age group.

Economic and Monetary Union (Emu)
History In June 1988 the European Council confirmed the objective of the progressive realization of
Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). It mandated a committee chaired by Jacques Delors, the
then President of the European Commission, to study and propose concrete stages leading to this
union. Economic and monetary union evolved in three discrete but evolutionary steps.
First step On the basis of the Delors Report, the European Council decided in June 1989 that the
first stage of the realisation of economic and monetary union should begin on 1 July 1990. On this
date, in principle, all restrictions on the movement of capital between Member States were
abolished.

A chronological sequence of events was pre announced for the changeover to the euro. This
scenario was mainly based on detailed proposals elaborated by the EMI
At the same time, the EMI was given the task of carrying out preparatory work on the future
monetary and exchange rate relationships between the euro area and other EU countries. In
December 1996 the EMI presented its report to the European Council, which formed the basis of a
Resolution of the European Council on the principles and fundamental elements of the new
exchange rate mechanism (ERM II), which was adopted in June 1997.
Third step On 1 January 1999 final stage of EMU commenced with the irrevocable fixing of the
exchange rates of the currencies of the 11 Member States initially participating in Monetary Union
and with the conduct of a single monetary policy under the responsibility of the ECB.
The number of participating Member States increased to 12 on 1 January 2001, when Greece
entered the third stage of EMU. Since that day the Bank of Greece has been part of the
Eurosystem. Greece s participation followed a decision taken on 19 June 2000 by the EU Council
В– meeting in the composition of the Heads of State or Government В– that Greece fulfilled the
convergence criteria.
Advantages of the EMU:
В•the costs decrease in transactions with the countries of the euro zone,
В•reduction of the degree of uncertainty among the

shareholder value. Therefore, the Board of Directors adopted a five year plan that establishes
annual revenue growth goals for First Transit of around 8%. For a firm with annual revenues of
$1.4B, this requires a dedicated business development team that is motivated to retain current
customers and win new business. The First Transit business development team operates under a

In addition, there is a cap for a single contract to prevent a large payment that could diminish the
team s drive to continue working for contract wins.
For renewal procurements, the challenges found in new business proposals are largely known and
already in place. Success is largely dependent upon the client relationship cultivated by the
operations team and the quality of the current service. Therefore, bonuses for contract renewals are
based on the first year revenue only. The purpose of the policy is to establish a Reward Systems
that places a direct relationship between an individual s performance and personal compensation.
Winning new contracts and retaining current work through a competitive procurement process is
critical to the financial success of the company. The policy also adds intrinsic value to the employee
as he or she earns a feeling of achievement and recognition when receiving the bonus check.
Stakeholders and situational factors are taken into consideration and influence the policy. The
policy is designed to motivate the team to win new business contracts that generate revenue growth.
The FirstGroup CEO and Board have established this as a key goal and business objective that
must be achieved. Situational factors are also considered. Common industry practice is to pay
commissions to business development personnel. The incentive policy places a direct link between
performance (contract wins) and

In Laurie Halse Anderson s fiction, Twisted, gender roles are constantly found and exchanged between characters. Along with Twisted, Anderson s fiction, Speak, thoroughly exhibits gender roles. In Twisted, Tyler goes through genderroles when he has to act like the typical tough male. In Speak, Nicole breaks gender roles by being an athletic character. In these two novels they both heavily show the roles of the two genders, and show what they go through. Gender roles are definitely enforced by social expectations and the expectations people hold above themselves. • 3. The Freedom Of Travelling On Horseback To Arthur there was nothing like the freedom of travelling on horseback. The few times when he sat in the car and watched Merlin steer their way across the countryside along the roads it felt unsatisfying to him. The world passed by the windows too fast for Arthur to take in his new surroundings. He needed to feel the elements around him, like the sun on his face or the wind blowing into his hair as it did today. Here in the wide open air it smelled like humid soil, grass and flowers. That was far better to him then the confined feel and the awful smell of the car. Not to mention that he still did not trust the machine. It had the power to kill as far as he was concerned, and it put the fear in him. For some reason he could not get passed the image of how close he came losing Gwaine to one... Arthur steered his horse through known territory as fast as he dared. The thrilling gallop made him feel alive again. In the last few hours he had felt more like his old self than ever since he came to this century. This century... it still stunned him that so much time had passed in a matter of what felt like days to him. The way Camelot got snapped away from him in a blip of time made him feel as if part of his heart was ripped out. For his entire life he had known nothing else than it. He fought for his people and protected it with every fibre of his being. To be left without such a cause and without the love of his people, including his friends, was just too much to bear at times. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Death And Violence During The Mahabharata And The Tale Of... DEATH AND VIOLENCE IN THE MAHABHARATA AND THE TALE OF THE HEIKE Death, and the process of dying and killing, is central to the plots of the ancient Indian Mahabharata and the ancient Japanese Tale of the Heike. These epics, though the products of different cultures, describe similar beliefs and practices regarding death, focusing on death in relation to the religious beliefs and societal roles of the warriors classes the Vedic Kshatriyas and the Japanese samurai. This great significance attached to death appears to act as a driving force and justification behind many of the violent acts of war in these narratives. It can therefore be argued that the belief in the cycle of death and rebirth, the acceptance of death as part of the warrior identity, and the idea of dying honourably lead to the normalization of violence in both the Mahabharata and the Tale of the Heike. Both epics show similar and overlapping religious beliefs; specifically, the belief in the cycle of death and rebirth. This belief is used in various instances to soften the significance of death and justify acts of violence which bring death. The conversation between the warrior Arjunaand Krishna, an incarnation of the god Vishnu, in the Bhagavad Gita highlight this. When Arjuna is reluctant to fight and kill his family members on the opposing side, Krishna argues that, due to the cycle of death and rebirth, the act of killing is not as bad as it seems. He asks That which is unborn and imperishable, how does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He is Majesty King Theodore I, resplendent in the red and black of a generalissimo where he lives in a winter place in Theodoresburg, capital of the Kingdom of Upalia (Nowlan 130). Like Miss Strangeworth, Teddy takes his role very seriously. Not only does he use complex military words such as generalissimo , he also takes awhile to make his decisions. While he is eating dinner, Teddy contemplated his choice, pondering on the tactics that he needs to use in relieving the siege of the fort by the river (Nowlan 131). • 7. Pros And Cons Of Free Trade Essay Pros and Cons of Free Trade I. Introduction Free trade, the ever present driving force behind our national and world economy, is a trade policy embroiled in controversy. It is considered by most economists to be an almost perfect trade policy, barring a few negative effects. Free trade has been shown to increase production, output and income levels in an economy. However, there are many people that view free trade as destroyer of economies and a catalyst of poverty. Critics of free trade have pointed out that in the short run, free trade causes a loss of jobs which in turn causes a rise in poverty levels. It is interesting to note that the argument for free trade and the argument against free trade are inverses of each other. Proponents of free trade see it as a tool to stimulate an economy while detractors see it as a policy which exacerbates poverty, causes dependency and reduces economic stability. In general, there is no consensus on free trade. Economists see free trade as the devil that we know. While imperfect, it is the best we have to work with. Popular opinion sees free trade as a cause of inequality. Even though it alleviates poverty and causes economic stimulation in the long run, it can cause the exact opposite in the short run. The pros and the cons of free trade must then be weighed, which will then allow us to determine if free trade is truly a beneficial trade policy. Therefore, this discussion will weigh the benefits and harms of free trade and will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Locke’s Qualities vs. Berkeley’s Idealism Locke s Qualities vs. Berkeley s Idealism In the modern period of philosophy, around the 16th and 17th century, after the fall of Rome and the rise of the dark years, three major events had occurred. The first began with the scientific revolution, where many philosophers were becoming scientist, such as the philosopher of science Francis Bacon. The next event was the resurgence of skepticism, where one questions everything until they discover the truth. For instance, the philosopher famous for saying the phrase Cogito, ergo sum, (translated as I think, therefore I am) was the skeptic Rene Descartes, who came up with this quote by doubting everything until there was nothing else to doubt except doubting. The final altering event in the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Berkeley describes there is no principle difference between the two qualities, for instance he states that a secondary quality corresponds to primary qualities because secondary qualities are characteristics that one cannot imagine an object existing without it, such as one cannot come up with an idea of a colorless shape. Another example that Berkeley points out is how people perceive qualities. Locke explains that secondary qualities are observed differently to different people. Berkeley finds this can be the same for primary qualities, such as two people looking at a triangle from different angles will have different perceptions of the shape. As a result, Berkeley finds that if one thinks secondary qualities exist only in the mind of the observer and one is convinced by his explanation of there being no distinction between the two qualities, then one would also conclude that primary qualities exist only in the mind of the observer. http:/ /a8.8d.344a.static.theplanet.com/great_philosophers/did_berkeley_misunderstand_locke ... Scholars used to believe that the Old Testament was unique among other beliefs in the Ancient Near East but they now view the Old Testament as identical to other religions of its day and time. The author also discusses the vital philosophical distinction between essence and accident. While it is true that we are impacted by the world of genre around us each day, it is also true that many people do not know what genre is. Genre is the expression of people s thoughts, ideas, or emotions, towards a target audience, that can be separated into categories depending on how one chose to express these things. There are numerous different types of genre that can be found in the world, but the most influential to myself is the genre of music. Music is everywhere, it comes in millions of different forms, and is the one thing nobody can really go a day without because it is such a common part of modern day life. Everyone has their own style of music they like to listen to, play, sing, or do whatever to as music can be applied and found in almost every situation. • 18. The Adventures Of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck Essay Dating back to 1841, modern comics have had a long history. Since The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck, which is generally accepted as the first American comic, comics as a genre of literature has changed both technologically and in perception (Greenberger). Throughout American history, comics have served as both an influence and a reflection of the time period. As America grew, changed, and experienced major historical events, society and the ideas within changed along with it. Many comic historians cite Genovese author and painter Rodolph TГ¶pffer as the first modern comic artist ( Comics Theory ). TГ¶pffer is the author of a comic titled Histoire de M. Vieux Bois, which was published in 1839. This was eventually translated in 1841 to the first American comic The Adventures of Mr. Obidiah Oldbuck (Greenberger). Though this was the first comic published in America, it cannot be said to reflect American history very well since it was not originally written in America. Nike Ajax Research Paper The Rise of the Surface to Air Missile The Soviet Union s ballistic missiles and long range bombers became a great threat to the United States of America, after tensions between the two intensified, following World War II. The US was afraid that the Soviet Union would attack and there would be no war fighting equipment available to intercept the threat. (Nike, n.d) The North American Air Defense Command developed the Nike Ajax, which stood as a high altitude defense system. It was the last line of air defense, which was beneficial because it extended America s level of protection. As time passed, there was a need for a more powerful, faster and bigger missile. As a result, the US created the new and improved Nike Hercules missile, which began replacing the Nike Ajax missiles. The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Henry VIII 1509-1515 Essay The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Henry VIII 1509 1515 There are many differing views of Henry VIII, some people see him as a scholar and others as a jovial and merry king. Each of these opinions views different characteristics of Henry VIII that contributed to his strengths and weaknesses. Henry, when he succeeded the throne had several problems that he had to address. There was also much expectation of him as his father had been viewed as a miser and a repressor and people saw the need for dramatic change. Prof. Ronald Hutton says he managed the nobility by honouring and flattering them . Henry went through Parliament to get reforms when he wanted them. By doing this he increased power of democracy as well as for himself. The early years of Henry s reign saw great rivalry amongst the noblemen to secure Henry s favour and to try to regain power, which Henry VII had taken away. They saw the opportunity of manipulating the new king into restoring what they had had. Henry was a dominating person which helped him fit into a kingly image, he was much taller than was average at the time and was muscular too giving the idea of him being strong. He was always trying to impress people, particularly foreign ambassadors, chiefly by his lavish court and rich life style. Dawson says he would play the part of a warrior hero . Maxwell is a well known expert in leadership and highly desired public speaker. The title of this book may leave one wondering about what Maxwell is trying to say with his book title. Is he saying all business is corrupt and without ethics? Or is he saying that ethics are not a requirement of business situations? The answer is no, Maxwell is expressing neither of those ideas. The author uses this title as an attention grabber. Maxwell is actually saying, and he enforces this idea throughout the book, that there is only ethics. There is no separate category for business ethics or personal ethics. It is simply ethics. The entire book is centered on The Golden Rule and how the rule should apply to business and personal situations. Maxwell uses stories, experiences and even religion to deliver his message on ethics. I, like many others, was drawn to this book because of the title. The title almost seems to give permission to be unethical, brushing off ethics as if it were nothing. This surprising title left me wondering about its true meaning. Is this published author really successful with this type of approach to ethics? This had the effect of weakening the overall peace process. Nonetheless, the third peace process had begun. The agenda for negotiation in May of 1999 included a variety of different topics, focusing on 12 main issues and 48 sub issues. These issues included: human rights, agrarian policy (the distribution of lands bought with drug money and the substitution of illicit crops), natural resources, the revision of the economic and social development model, reform of the Justice system and the state, accords on International Humanitarian Law (IHL), the redefinition of the peace time role of the armed forces, and international agreements and the democratic mechanisms legitimizing these. Efforts were made on behalf of both parties to build confidence. Among these efforts was the initiation of ceasefires during Christmas and the New Year in 1999/2000. It is important to note that, though each side was continuing in the peace process, there was no overarching ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Objective Meaning Many people walk around not worry about whether or not life has any objective meaning, at least most of the time, and when they do think on the topic of the meaning of life, they seem assured that there is some objective meaning. For many, this objective meaning lies in their religion. The notion that God creates the meaning in life does make some sense. For if God created humans, it is reasonable that he created them with intention and purpose. Now this might not be the purpose people want to have, but it is purpose for them none the less. It is from this God given purpose that people can derive their meaning. For those without religion, well, there is always subjective meaning. There is family. There is the future of the human race. In short,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The existence of God is beyond the scope of this paper. However, if God does not exist, and life has no meaning, that doesn t mean life has to be miserable. There are many wholesome things one can find joy in. People can actually enjoy their jobs. Many people really do value their distractions. People can find joy in the company of others. People can even find joy in helping each other. Why not donate to Unicef? Why not volunteer? Still, people want meaning in their lives, and they find things to get their meaning out of. Most of the time, the things people try to get meaning from are very admirable, but this doesn t change the fact, that life without God, is meaningless. It may feel better to say that one s meaning to life is trying to improve human quality of life, and hopefully, these people succeed in their quest. • 40. The Word Iconoclasm In The Byzantine Empire The Word Iconoclasm refers to the destruction of images or hostility towards visual representations in general. This word more specifically is used for the iconoclastic Controversy that shook the Byzantine Empire for more than 100 years. The Hostility towards religious representations began in 726 when Emperor Leo publicly opposed the icons. The word icon refers to many different things today. It can refer to graphic symbols in our software and to powerful cultural figures. (Dr. Davor Dzalto). However, the original meaning comes from the Greek meaning for image. In the medieval era, it meant a religious image on a wooden panel used for prayer and devotion. More specifically, icons came to typify the art of the Orthodox Christian Church.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another theory suggests that the prohibition was an attempt to keep the growing wealth and power of the monasteries. They produced the icons and used them as a primary target of the violence of the Iconoclastic Controversy. Others say the prohibition was religious, and an attempt to correct the right practice of worshiping images. Leo the third s prohibition may have been because of the huge volcanic eruption in 726, thought to have happened because of God s anger over the dedication of the icons. The original theological basis for iconoclasm was weak, they relied mostly on the Old Testament prohibition. But it was clear that it was not absolute because God gave instructions on how to make a three dimensional Cherubim for the Ark of the Covenant, which was quoted in the Old Testament, a couple of chapters after the passage that prohibits images. Emperor Constantine V gave a slightly different theological approach for iconoclasm. He claimed, He claimed that each visual representation of Christ necessarily ends in a heresy since Christ, according to generally accepted Christian dogmas, is simultaneously God and man, united without separation, and any visual depiction of Christ either separates these natures, representing Christ s humanity alone, or confuses ... A bruise turns into a gaudy green pigment before it fully heals; a rainstorm sends hail falling from the sky, impaling anything it sees, right before a beautiful rainbow appears; the red fleshed pimple on one s face continues to grow bigger and bigger until it spontaneously disappears. A catastrophe can lead to success and hope, much like the Black Deathleads to the Renaissance. The Black Death was the catalyst of the European Renaissance because of the effects it had on the European economy, artistic expression, and technological advances. The Black Death affected the European economy in a positive way. The biggest change, good for peasants, was the end of Feudalism. Feudalism is a social triangle that decided who obeyed who and many other unfair standards for all Serfs, the base of the pyramid. Due to the huge population deficit, Serfs were scarce and Barons were now willing to pay higher wages and offer extra benefits. All their life they had lived off the serfs hard work, and were willing to pay them to stay on the manor to continue slaving for them (Vunguyen). This gave the Serfs more power to ask for higher wages and the freedom to find more work if they do not get what they want. Serfs, or peasants, began ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When we read these types of confrontations with Jesus we automatically envision these groups as evil people when in reality they weren t at all. In this report, we will study and analyze the main religious groups that were present during Jesusera and why they might have disagreed with Him. 2 The Phariseeswere one group of people that had difficulties and problems with Jesus teachings. The Pharisees were ultra Orthodox men who shunned the unrighteous and made up many rules on how to be holy. There were two main groups of Pharisees the Shammai and the Hillel. The Shammai believed that only the Jews were loved by God and that Gentiles shouldn t convert to Judaism. Because of this belief, the Shammai grew to hate the Gentiles and even made edicts so that the two were separated. The Shammai is also known to have political ties and a close relation to the zealots who wanted to overthrow Rome. The second and less influential groups of Pharisees were the Hillel which focused more on people as opposed to rules. They were much more open to Gentile converts and Jesus acted more positively with this group than the other. The potential conflicts of these groups would be when Jesus would heal someone on the Sabbath the Shammaiites would see this as Jesus doing work on the Sabbath while the Hillelites would see this as a good deed which was permitted on the Sabbath.
