2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Maleficent
...was once a little fairy. She lived in the woods with all the other figures.
She was a beautiful girl. She had long, brown hair, horns on her head and a big,
pair of wings on her back.
As a person she was very kind to everyone and she looked at life with a
positive view. At first she was a good person,
but things changed and after a special incident,
she becomes “evil”.
The whole story depends on your perspective
about good and evil.
3. The movie “Maleficent” comes from the original
Disney movie (and book) “Törnrosa” from 1959.
In this animated movie you follow, as in mostly all
cases, the “good” side of the story. They want you to
think one thing is right and the other wrong.
But this time they decided to show the film with
another view, the “evil” ones, and also this time it
isn’t animated.
4. The main characters:
Maleficent: The fairy who the whole story is about.
She grows up and becomes an “evil” person.
Aurora: The king’s daughter. She’s a princess but a
different one, not like all the others. She loves
everyone and she looks at everything with a positive
view.
Stefan: The boy who Maleficent
was in love with when they were
young. He’s obsessed about power
and wealth. He did everything he
could to become the king of the
land. He’s selfish.
5. What’s the story about?
Maleficent was a little fairy. She lived in the woods with all the other figures.
She fell in love with a Prince who lived in the other side of the land. The boy
was obsessed about power. One day he decided to take Maleficent’s wings.
He disappeared and started a new life in his part of the land. Maleficent was
now lonely, without wings and with a broken heart. After this, she started to
become evil…
Time passed by and they both grew up...
6. The Prince grew up and became a king. His love for Maleficent was still there,
but after he took her wings without her permission he couldn’t be with her.
And she couldn’t love the man who did this to her.
The King, Stefan, built another family and after a while he got a daughter. And
her name was Princess Aurora. Angry as Maleficent was, she spelled a curse
on the baby which could only be lifted with true love.
7. But at somehow, Maleficent had a deep love to this child. She
always walked by her side and watched her. And also Aurora
seemed to feel the same about her. After many years, Maleficent
Regretted her spell but was it too late now? Did even “real” or “true
love”exist?
