A brave heroine whose quest involves living her true gender. A genderqueer knight who battles the transphobic court to save their prince. The journeys taken by trans heroes weave in and out of Joseph Campbell’s classic pattern, but deviate from it in specific ways. The hero often fears discovery by the close community, but nonetheless departs on the adventure—leaving a place of dangers to find a refuge and community of acceptance. Talismans include gendered tools that show the mentor's acceptance of the hero's real identity. The romance is likewise a guided path to selfhood and affirmation. Villains are the transphobes of real life, mythologized and made deadlier. In happier stories, the parent figures learn from the conflict, and finally seek reconciliation. Top franchises like Steven Universe, The Matrix, The Umbrella Academy, Sense8, Sandman, DC, and Marvel demonstrate these tropes, as do recent top fantasy books and graphic novels by nonbinary authors worldwide. The tales end with the hero wielding the dual worlds in a way beyond anything Campbell observed, which nonetheless fits the patterns of the oldest myths.

The Postcolonial Villain's Journey postcolonial.pptxValerie Frankel
Wicked, Moana, Maleficent, and so many recent novels (Medea, Circe, Queen of the Conquered, The Poppy War, Sorrowland, The Deep) tell a different kind of villain's journey--about a heroine mislabeled and condemned by society after she's been betrayed and tricked. How does her journey go? Let's find out...(a paper presented at Wiscon 2022). Youtube available: https://youtu.be/BBkMEKDD7ao

Dybbuks, Robots, and Golems: Exploring Jewish Science Fiction and FantasyValerie Frankel
So many creators and characters are Jewish, from the earliest invention of American science fiction to the superheroes and novelists of each era to so many wonderful stories today. From Bambi and Kafka to Fievel and Mel Brooks to Harley Quinn and Juda, let's see what's out there today.
The fourth wave has decidedly arrived, celebrating women and minorities in central roles. Utopias like Black Panther celebrate nonEuropean alternate paths. Disney princesses reject the old patterns. Now women can be Ghostbusters or Jedi, captain Stormtroopers, fly the TARDIS. Superheroines have found a sense of humor. Meanwhile, self-publishing and internet platforms have dispersed with many gatekeepers and established new levels of diversity. Thanks to the speed of the internet, backlash for this new wave appears simultaneous. However, progress keeps coming. Fans are finding alternatives to the Bechdel Test and clamoring for diverse creators, even as they discover amazing alternatives to bland strong female characters and gratuitous sexualization. While these trends were already appearing in books, comics, and television, cracking the most expensive medium of film has meant real global change. Youtube available at https://studio.youtube.com/video/e_hCmnqPfXg
Superheroines through the decades have been far more multicultural than readers might expect. There were Senorita Rio and the Victory Girls in the 40s; Storm, Mantis, Talia al Ghul, Misty Knight, Psylocke, Ms. Marvel and a host of TV shows in the 70s; Jubilee, Katana, Karma, Kitty Pryde, Amanda Waller, and a Spider-Woman TV show in the 80s; Oracle and Martha Washington in the nineties. Today, there’s an explosion onscreen from Wonder Woman and Black Panther’s family to TV shows like Runaways, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, DC’s Super Hero Girls, and Agents of SHIELD. Comics like Faith, A-Force, America Chavez, Spider-Woman, Moon Girl, Silk, Ms. Marvel, Birds of Prey, and Squirrel Girl emphasize how these stories are always pushing the boundaries. Outlander is much more than a television romance about a World War II nurse and a Jacobite in a fetching kilt. The series has been categorized as a period drama, adventure saga, military history and fantasy epic. Inspired by the Irish legends of Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the prophecies of Brahan Seer, the storyline is also filled with mythology and symbolism from around the world, from the Fair Folk and the Loch Ness monster to wendigos, ghosts, zombies and succubae. The series is also rich with its own symbolism: heather and white roses, the dragonfly in amber, Claire’s blue vase and wedding gown, her wedding rings and pearl necklace. This presentation by Valerie Estelle Frankel (author of five books about the Starz series and novels) untangles the myriad of myths, legends, symbols and literary references found within.
How did the 1920s fall into fascism, and how did we start walking down a similar road? How does Rowling's story of angry Grindelwald and his quest for Wizard Supremacy mirror it? Parallels between then and now.
From Downton Abbey, Great Gatsby and Boardwalk Empire to the new Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts, fans are flying back to the 1920s. But what's the appeal? How does 20s culture reflect our own and what does it reveal about history and its cycles? (Presented at Clockwork Alchemy, May 29 2016, San Jose, CA)
The rise of retrofuturism has introduced a fantastical new line with the DC Bombshells -- heroines without the men, all set in World War II. Their aesthetic and clever adaptation mirrors the best of steampunk rewriting. There's also Gotham by Gaslight, JLA: Age of Wonder, The Golden Age, Batman: Leatherwing, Batman/Houdini, and more. Marvel has offered their own retellings, in the alt-Battleworld, with J. Michael Straczynski's Golden Age-style The Twelve, and with even earlier fantasies back to 1602: Witchhunter Angela. Who's doing it right, and how steampunk are these stories?

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3.
4. Common Day
The tale begins in the humdrum world of
kitchen chores and powerlessness.
The heroine lives with an absent mother
and brutal stepmother. The father figure,
if there is one, is equally obstructive.
More than anything, the girl longs for
an escape, an adventure. Here the story begins.
5. Call to Adventure
Without a catalyst, Cinderella might remain in
her kitchen forever. Some event, either a
chance at freedom and happiness or a
devastating act of destruction propels the
heroine from her place of safety and into the
frightening world of the spirit.
6. Call to AdventureWhen her father saw her, he was much
shocked, and declared she was not his
daughter… Then poor Eliza wept, and
thought of her eleven brothers, who were all
away. Sorrowfully, she stole away from the
palace, and walked, the whole day, over
fields and moors, till she came to the great
forest. She knew not in what direction to go;
but she was so unhappy, and longed so for
her brothers, who had been, like herself,
driven out into the world, that she was
determined to seek them.
From the great
heaven Inana set
her mind on the
great below. My
mistress
abandoned
heaven,
abandoned earth,
and descended to
the underworld.
In the oldest forms of
the tale, Persephone
descends without
Hades’ brutality. When
she, as innocent
flower maid, discovers
the wandering spirits
of the dead, she
voluntarily descends
to succor them.
7. Refusing the Call
Here, the hero is
faced with the
unknown. By contrast,
home represents
safety and security, a
place the child is
loathe to leave.
8. Refusing the Call
Sleeping
Beauty
“During puberty, sleep is the refuge in which an adolescent
girl can absorb the new sense of herself that she gains
from the prick of the spindle, and changes from girl to
woman: a transformation more radical than from boy to
man.” –Joan Gould, Spinning Straw into Gold

12. Sword: Male Talisman
• Warrior Woman often have male
weapons, clothes, mentor, nemesis.
• Mu Lan, Atlanta, Athena, Artemis, Éowyn,
Batgirl, Xena, Buffy, Katniss
13. Feminine weapons
• More feminine warriors are more likely to
fight with distance weapons – bows,
spears, the lasso, the whip, and the
chakram.
16. Sidekicks,
Trials, Adversaries
Animal helpers and advisers
generally represent part of
the heroine’s psyche,
pointing out things she
doesn’t notice and teaching
her how to outwit her
adversary. They guide her
along her path, bolstering
her courage when
the quest
seems daunting.
17. Prince Charming:
The World of Eros
In the game of love, the hero and heroine each view
their partner as a shapeshifter. This “other half” they
must cleave to like themselves has frightening mood
swings and unpredictable desires. Physically, the two
people are opposites, with contrasting desires and
emotions. Hence, many tales appear about enticing
swan maidens from the sea or taming beastly
monsters into Prince Charmings.
18. Prince Charming:
The World of Eros
• Shimchong, The Blindman's Daughter (Korea)
• The Brahman Girl who Married a Tiger (India)
• Bull-of-all-the-Land (Jamaica)
• Pretty Polly (Appalachian America)
• Egle, Queen of Serpents (Lithuania)
• Eros and Psyche (Greece)
• The Lizard Husband (Indonesia).
• Monkey Son-in-Law (Japan)
• The Princess and the Pig (Turkey)
• The Frog Prince (Germany)
• Bluebeard (France)
• The Green Serpent (Italy)
• The Frog Prince (Sri Lanka)
20. Prince Charming:
The Helpless Father
At some point, the heroine returns home to
discover the prince, or father-figure, cannot save
her. She must leave the patriarchy and rely on
herself.
21. Descent
into Death
The heroine
descends into the
realm of darkness
toward initiation and
wisdom, seeking her
own elusive dark side.
There she will find her
greatest challenge …
herself.
22. Prince’s Castle
• While the hero visits the realm of death
(the feminine sphere), The Little Mermaid
and The Six Swans see heroines trapped
in the patriarchy’s tower where they have
no power.
24. Atonement with the Mother
Like the witch-queen of
Snow White, the Terrible
Mother is enraged that
she is no longer fairest in
the kingdom. Therefore,
she plots the destruction
of the heroine. Our
heroine descends to the
darkest place of all, and
there, confronts her.
25. Villains: The Child-Killer
• The witch is anti-life, killer of
children. She freezes the world
into sterility, forbidding growth or
change. Frequently, she is the
Jungian shadow for the young
questor.
• Llorona, Mexico (pictured)
• Condenado, South America
• Medea, Greece
• Houmea, Maori (pictured)
• Lilith, Jewish Baba Yaga, Russia
(pictured)
28. Reward
Triumphant, the heroine wins what she has
sought for so long. She snatches her lover
from the Fairie Queen’s horse, or saves her
child from certain death. She may find the brief
romance she’s sought for so long. Still, the
quest has not ended, until she returns safely
home.
29. Mastering Life and Death
To achieve the greatest
success, the heroine
becomes a queen or
“goddess” herself. In this
way she achieves
enormous power and
becomes a guardian for
the next generation. Even
if their ascension isn’t to
royalty or goddesshood, all
train successors, passing
on the wisdom they’ve
learned.
30. Ascension
Still, the other side
of the benevolent
mother goddess is
the destroyer:
Medea turns
murderous and Gaia
can destroy as well
as create. For the
heroine as goddess
ascended, it’s a
short distance to her
own shadow: the
Terrible Mother.
31. The Destroyer’s Wisdom
Kali is the great
goddess whose
stomach is a void and
so can never be filled
and whose womb is
giving birth forever to all
things.
Though the Destroyer may
be the enemy, destruction
allows space for creation.
