This visualisation shows male and female suicide rates in Australia from 2007-2011 broken down by age group. The key patterns shown are that male suicide rates are significantly higher than female rates, with the peak rates for both occurring between 35-44 years of age. After age 45, suicide rates decline for both genders. For males, rates increase rapidly after age 15-24 to over 1,500 suicides, which is 37.5 times higher than the under 15 age group. Female rates also rise with age but only increase by a factor of 15 compared to males. The visual effectively communicates the association between gender, age and suicide rates in Australia.

Analysis of the 'Real Men, Real Depression' Public Health Campaign as it Rela...Danielle Hoyt
I performed an in depth analysis of the National Institute of Mental Health's 'Real Men, Real Depression" public health campaign, incorporating my own knowledge and research regarding Major Depressive Disorder in men and the public's perception of it, as well as effective health campaign strategies. A brief overview is provided of the background of the disorder, its symptomology, available treatments, and prevalence in American males. The paper then provides a thorough analysis of the significance of this particular public health campaign, the goals of the campaign, and its strengths and limitations. It additionally offers recommendations for future campaigns on this topic
In your opinion, what are some of the most urgent issues related to .pdfaesalem06
In your opinion, what are some of the most urgent issues related to adolescent and young adult
health?
Young people have to work through a broad range of issues as they move from childhood to
adulthood. They may have to deal with changes to their bodies and their feelings and they may
be thinking about having their first relationship or having sex.
Young people may also be exploring their identities in terms of their sexuality or gender identity.
They may want more independence from their families, and their friends may play a more
important part in their lives. Some may also want to experiment with alcohol and other drugs.
Although growing up can be an exciting time, it can also be confusing and challenging. Research
shows confident young people who feel supported by their families and friends are more likely to
safely negotiate issues like these. However, it is important to remember adolescence is generally
a time for experimenting with risky behaviours, even with good parenting and role modelling.
Teenagers and alcohol
Alcohol is one of the most widely used drugs in Australia. According to recent surveys, around
40 per cent of young people aged 12-17 have had a full serve of alcohol and around 60 per cent
of year 10-12 students have drunk alcohol at least once.
For young people, alcohol use is associated with a range of health risks, including:
· unsafe sex
· unwanted sex
· unintended pregnancy
· drink-driving and road accidents
· violence and aggressive behaviour
· criminal activity.
Teenagers and body image
Young people are at risk of developing a negative body image, where they dislike the way they
look.
The related health problems for young people can include:
· crash dieting and malnourishment
· eating disorders, including anorexia and bulimia nervosa
· obesity
· steroid use (to build muscle mass).
Teenagers and bullying
Estimates suggest around one in six children are bullied every few weeks or more in Australia.
Young people are bullied by their peers for many reasons, including:
· the way they look (for example, if they are overweight)
· resisting pressure to conform
· their cultural or socioeconomic background or religion
· their academic achievements
· their sexual orientation or behaviour
· being ‘the new kid’ at school.
Teenagers and smoking
Despite widespread media campaigns, tobacco smoking is still popular among young people in
Australia, especially young women, though the number of young people who smoke cigarettes is
decreasing.
· Smoking tobacco increases people’s risk of:
· cancers of the lung, throat and mouth
· reduced lung function
· asthma and other respiratory problems
· damaged senses of smell and taste
· heart disease, major heart attack and stroke.
Teenagers and family life
Young people can face issues relating to family life, including:
· relationship problems between family members
· family violence
· abuse, including neglect and physical, sexual or emotional abuse
· separation and divorce.
For some young peopl.
This presentation describes the health challenges of adolescents, the approaches to interviewing an adolescent during a clinical encounter and the characteristics of an adolescent friendly health facility.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

2. INTRODUCTION
What can we see from this visualisation
Half of the map is interspersed with
blue arrows, whereas the other half is
interspersed with pink arrows
One half of the map is blue which
represent the males and the other side
is pink to represent females
In both left and right columns, each
quantile is 200 units greater than the
previous one from bottom to the top
These data are representing the
number of suicides that were
happening during 2007 to 2011
In the centre, there is a gradient
column grouping with different range
of numbers
The use of arrows that are connecting
between either the left column or right
column and the middle column
Every number in this map
The colours of the arrows are
changing gradually with the numbers
The age group from teens to elders
It specifically indicates the association
between age and gender
numerical form to extract and
understand the data in a better way
As the colour of the arrow gets darker,
means more death was happening in
a particular range of age and vice
3. DATA DISPLAY ON VISUALISATION
We cannot see the phenomenon or story behind unless
we technically use the concrete number to present it
Self- explanatory, easy to read
More participation from the audience
But most importantly
makes the INVISIBLE VISIBLE
4. PATTERNS
• Suicidal rates are increasing, while there are many factors
contributing to one’s psychological status, we as presenters whilst
researching found surprisingly that male, is the leading group in
suicide.
• Peak age for male and female suicides are 35-44, after the age of 45,
both gender group’s suicidal rate starts to decrease
• MALE: After 15-24 years old, their suicide rates increase rapidly to
almost 15 00, which is almost 37.5 times high than under 15s
• FEMALE: while female’s suicidal rates increase, it is only 15 times
more in contrast to males
5. CAUSES OF SUICIDE
QUESTION to class: How many of you experience signs of
depression?
• According to Australian Psychology Society which found that “more than 80% of
suicides are men (1,816 of 2,361 in 2010)”
• Beyond Blue “1 in 5 men experience anxiety”
THESE reasons are:
• “age, unemployment, social isolation, chronic illness, and or certain occupations
are the higher causes for high rate male suicides.” Dr Ciaran Mulholland
• Peer/ social pressure, physical change, financial factor, alcohol use, drug use,
relationship breakdown, psychological change are also factors to be considered
BUT why?
• Men are less inclined to communicate feelings of despair or hopelessness, and
are more likely to present a stoic attitude towards misfortune (Howerton et al.,
2007; Witte et al., 2012)
6. The assumption is that female
suicide rates would be higher than
males
But in fact male suicide rates are
higher, for every 100 female
suicides, 333 male suicides
happen.
Though it is important to target
females, it seems that there aren’t
enough information provided for
males.
Males tend to have a greater
tendency not to recognise or
respond to their own negative
emotions or distress
They are less communicative about
their emotions and feel like if they
seek help its an act of failure or
weakness
So this visualisation can help give
more awareness and attention that
male suicides need.
Like more help lines, more support groups
more campaigns directed to males for males.
Its most important for teenagers to have
support groups and the knowledge that help
is available.
Because of the pressures of society and
from their peers they are often
Confused
Lonely
struggling with their identity
Which often leads to depression or anxiety
and further down the track to possible
suicide.
There are sites like mensline.org.au and
beyonblue-men.org.au
With this information becoming more
visible hopefully there will be more services
created to target those in need of help.
7. PUBLICS
General Public :
Helps bring more
awareness about it in
the community.
More attention to
teenagers and young
adults (15-24 age
group)
Community can create
more support groups
Government :
The government can
use this information to
create more initiatives
targeting different age
groups
More programs and
lessons about suicide
and depression in
schools.
The most suicides occur between ages 15-74Between the ages of 5-14 the suicide rates stay under 60 65-74 goes down to less than 1000’s
Why male? Because they are morefearlessness about death and physical pain insensitivityLack of awareness of available support services leads them to deal with depression and death by themselves“males tend to choose more lethal methods of suicide such as hanging (60% of male suicides), poisoning, including by car exhaust (11%), and firearms (8%)” according to Australian Psychology Society
