Every year 894,950 people attempt suicide. Do you know why the symbol used by Project Semicolon represents hope for dealing with suicide and mental illness?
The document discusses the mission and goals of the organization "It Takes Courage" which aims to raise awareness of bullying and decrease suicide rates. It provides statistics on suicide rates worldwide, nationwide, in Colorado and Routt County specifically. It notes that rural counties in Colorado have higher suicide rates and that suicide is a leading cause of death among youth. The organization has conducted over 50 anti-bullying and suicide prevention programs in Routt County, reaching over 2250 students and staff.
Depression is a major issue affecting many teens and can lead to serious consequences like suicide. Approximately 1 in 8 teens suffer from depression and 20% will experience depression before adulthood. Depression is the second leading cause of death for youth aged 10-24, with 294 youth dying by suicide each year in Canada. Every 40 seconds someone dies by suicide, totaling over 90 suicides per hour globally. While women experience depression twice as often as men, men are three times more likely to die by suicide. Suicide is preventable and help is available at the websites listed.
Suicide is the intentional killing of oneself, and is the 11th most common cause of death in the US. Worldwide there are an estimated 10-20 million non-fatal suicide attempts each year. Common suicide methods include cutting wrists, drowning, suffocation, jumping, hanging, and overdosing. Teens often feel suicide is the only way to escape problems that feel impossible to deal with, while others feel guilty about something they've done. Suicide is the leading cause of death for those under 35, and over 50% of suicides involve alcohol or drug dependence.
This visualisation shows male and female suicide rates in Australia from 2007-2011 broken down by age group. The key patterns shown are that male suicide rates are significantly higher than female rates, with the peak rates for both occurring between 35-44 years of age. After age 45, suicide rates decline for both genders. For males, rates increase rapidly after age 15-24 to over 1,500 suicides, which is 37.5 times higher than the under 15 age group. Female rates also rise with age but only increase by a factor of 15 compared to males. The visual effectively communicates the association between gender, age and suicide rates in Australia.
Suicide is a major problem in Jamshedpur, India, with the city having the highest suicide rate in Jharkhand state. According to the document, 16% of suicides in Jharkhand occur in Jamshedpur. The document discusses the psychology and social factors that may contribute to suicidal behaviors in Jamshedpur, such as mental illness, economic hardship, alcoholism, and family issues. It also describes steps that one school has taken to address the problem, such as student essay competitions, panel discussions, and teacher training workshops.

Bullying is a specific type of aggression where one person intends to harm or disturb another person through repeated behavior over time and where there is an imbalance of power. Statistics show that 1 in 4 kids are bullied. Both victims and bullies face negative consequences, with victims experiencing depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, and bullies being more likely to engage in criminal behavior. Professionals from many fields need to work together to address bullying through prevention programs and policy changes.

Suicide as a Major Global Health IssueApril Mortel
The document discusses suicide rates and behaviors worldwide. It states that over 1 million people die by suicide each year globally, with rates expected to increase to over 1.5 million by 2020. Between 10-20 times as many people attempt suicide compared to those who die by suicide. Suicide greatly impacts those close to the individual, with around 100 million people affected each year. The WHO found some of the highest suicide rates in 2012 were in North Korea and Russia, while northern and southern Africa had among the lowest rates.
Suicide is defined as the direct and willful destruction of one's own life. Death is considered suicide when accidental or natural causes are ruled out and the circumstances surrounding the death are consistent with suicide. There are several potential causes of suicide, including religious or cultural factors, personal issues, financial problems, and social/political causes. Religious or cultural causes may include values around dying for one's country or acts of self-immolation. Personal causes can involve relationship issues, parental relationships, exam failure, or mental health issues. Financial causes may stem from poverty or monetary loss, while social and political causes could be a protest or response to a failed coup attempt.
Bullying involves an aggressive behavior intended to harm another person through an imbalance of power. It is typically a pattern of repeated behavior. While suicide rates among youth have been falling, simplistic explanations that bullying alone causes suicide are rarely accurate. Most bullying in schools is relational or social in nature, and involves roles like bullies, victims, and bystanders. Schools can address bullying through assessing climate and victimization, training staff, creating anti-bullying teams, developing clear rules, increasing supervision, assisting victims, and allowing time for social-emotional learning.
The document discusses various perspectives on suicide from an evolutionary standpoint. It explores how suicide may be adaptive by reducing the burden an individual places on their kin, allowing more resources for relatives' survival and reproduction. However, suicide is also examined as potentially non-adaptive when driven by loss of self-esteem, mental illness, or as a cry for help. The document also reviews research finding genetic factors and social influences involved in suicide risk.
Social isolation is characterized by an absence of social interactions and support structures. It can be voluntary or involuntary, and the involuntary type is associated with worse mental and physical health outcomes. Studies show social isolation is linked to premature mortality, excessive morbidity, and negative physiological impacts. Interventions like group work may help address social isolation, while one-on-one work may better alleviate loneliness, but more research is still needed to fully understand effective solutions.
FOREST is a web-based computer game for females ages 14-19 with mild to moderate depression. Its primary goal is to reduce the negative symptoms of depression through cognitive therapy, game-based learning, and affective learning.
This document discusses potential ways to prevent psychopathic and violent behavior. It argues that both nature and nurture influence such behaviors, so more funding is needed for research. Environmental factors like parental rejection, abuse, and video games may impact criminal behavior. The document suggests various prevention strategies like increased community involvement, counseling, and organizations to raise awareness and money for the issue.
This document provides an overview of economic mobility issues in Colorado presented by Scott Wasserman of the Bell Policy Center. It discusses barriers like growing inequality, lack of investment in communities, rising low-wage jobs, and challenges facing the middle class. It also notes opportunities like reforming social insurance systems, adapting to technological changes, and investing more in education, economic security, health, and fiscal policy issues. The future of work, shifting demographics, and a need for racial and gender equity are also addressed.
This document discusses suicide statistics and risk factors. It notes that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US and 3rd leading cause of death for those aged 10-24. Every 13.7 minutes, someone in the US commits suicide, and every 32 seconds someone attempts suicide. The most common risk factors for suicide are mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance abuse issues. The document provides resources for help, such as calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or seeking emergency medical care. It concludes by memorializing Britney S. Craig.
This document discusses various forms of institutional ageism, including higher standards for poverty assistance for youth, myths about aging, and consequences of ageism. It notes that elderly individuals commonly respond to ageism through acceptance, denial, avoidance, or reform. The text highlights several issues: between 1-3 million elderly face abuse annually but only a small percentage is reported; lack of preventive healthcare and research for older adults; most nursing homes fail to meet standards; and ageism exists in emergency services, the workplace, and media which portrays few older characters.
Youth suicide is a prevalent issue in American society. Each year, approximately 400,000 high school students attempt suicide, and 12 young people between ages 15-24 die by suicide daily. The article examines common risk factors for youth suicide such as depression, sexual orientation, anger, substance abuse, and involvement in the juvenile justice system. It aims to raise awareness of the problem and need for prevention programs.
Bullying has become a serious national problem, affecting about 1 in 3 students. While bullying used to consist of physical acts like hitting or pushing, today's technology allows bullying to also occur online, known as cyberbullying. Heavy exposure to media that glamorizes bullying can negatively impact viewers' perceptions of social reality. Many adults still view bullying as a normal part of childhood, but it has serious consequences for victims, including an increased risk of suicide. Despite growing awareness and efforts to address bullying, the rates of reported bullying have been increasing in some areas. To truly address the problem, society must work to stop tolerating and perpetuating bullying behaviors.
This document discusses how environment can impact personality through examples of juvenile delinquency and White Fang the wolf. Factors like lack of family time, family drug use, abuse, fighting and bullying can lead some juveniles to offend or animals to become vicious, while love, stability, support and carefree environments can help reform offenders and change personalities for the better.
Ageism is the systematic stereotyping and discrimination against individuals based on their age. It can affect both the elderly and young people through negative age stereotypes. Institutional ageism is reflected in things like higher poverty standards, lack of job training for young workers, and health care systems that focus on acute care rather than preventative care for the elderly. The elderly are commonly stereotyped as asexual, unproductive, forgetful, and passive. In response, they often accept, deny, avoid, or try to reform ageist attitudes. Elder abuse is underreported with only 1 in 6 incidents reported. Ageism also affects health care, nursing homes, emergency response, workplaces, and media representation of the elderly.

The facial nerve, also known as cranial nerve VII, is one of the 12 cranial nerves originating from the brain. It's a mixed nerve, meaning it contains both sensory and motor fibres, and it plays a crucial role in controlling various facial muscles, as well as conveying sensory information from the taste buds on the anterior two-thirds of the tongue.

The Ultimate Guide in Setting Up Market Research System in Health-TechGokul Rangarajan
How to effectively start market research in the health tech industry by defining objectives, crafting problem statements, selecting methods, identifying data collection sources, and setting clear timelines. This guide covers all the preliminary steps needed to lay a strong foundation for your research.
"Market Research it too text-booky, I am in the market for a decade, I am living research book" this is what the founder I met on the event claimed, few of my colleagues rolled their eyes. Its true that one cannot over look the real life experience, but one cannot out beat structured gold mine of market research.
Many 0 to 1 startup founders often overlook market research, but this critical step can make or break a venture, especially in health tech.
But Why do they skip it?
Limited resources—time, money, and manpower—are common culprits.
"In fact, a survey by CB Insights found that 42% of startups fail due to no market need, which is like building a spaceship to Mars only to realise you forgot the fuel."
Sudharsan Srinivasan
Operational Partner Pitchworks VC Studio
Overconfidence in their product’s success leads founders to assume it will naturally find its market, especially in health tech where patient needs, entire system issues and regulatory requirements are as complex as trying to perform brain surgery with a butter knife. Additionally, the pressure to launch quickly and the belief in their own intuition further contribute to this oversight. Yet, thorough market research in health tech could be the key to transforming a startup's vision into a life-saving reality, instead of a medical mishap waiting to happen.
Example of Market Research working
Innovaccer, founded by Abhinav Shashank in 2014, focuses on improving healthcare delivery through data-driven insights and interoperability solutions. Before launching their platform, Innovaccer conducted extensive market research to understand the challenges faced by healthcare organizations and the potential for innovation in healthcare IT.
Identifying Pain Points: Innovaccer surveyed healthcare providers to understand their difficulties with data integration, care coordination, and patient engagement. They found widespread frustration with siloed systems and inefficient workflows.
Competitive Analysis: Analyzed competitors offering similar solutions in healthcare analytics and interoperability. Identified gaps in comprehensive data aggregation, real-time analytics, and actionable insights.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensured their platform complied with HIPAA and other healthcare data privacy regulations. This compliance was crucial to gaining trust from healthcare providers wary of data security issues.
Customer Validation: Conducted pilot programs with several healthcare organizations to validate the platform's effectiveness in improving care outcomes and operational efficiency. Gathered feedback to refine features and user interface.

This slide is very helpful for physiotherapy students and also for other medical and healthcare students.
Here is a summary of Pneumothorax:
Pneumothorax, also known as a collapsed lung, is a condition that occurs when air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall. This air buildup puts pressure on the lung, preventing it from expanding fully when you breathe. A pneumothorax can cause a complete or partial collapse of the lung.
2. Suicide, tragically, is all too

someone’s suffering was so intense
they felt it necessary to end their
life, but it leaves in its wake a trail of
additional victims: friends, family,

4. Project Semicolon is a nonprofit
dedicated to the prevention of
suicide. Founded in 2013, the
organization has helped some 5.2
million and believes, according to
their website, “suicide is generally
preventable” and “is the collective
responsibility of each and every
person on the planet.”
5. Amy Bleuel, the creator of
Project Semicolon, told The
Mighty in 2015. She added,
“We see it as you are the
author and your life is the
sentence. You’re choosing to
keep going.”
6. Amy used the semicolon
symbol as a way to honor her
father who died from suicide
and as a way to help others
dealing with depression and
mental illness find hope.
7. Chris Cornell, one of the original creators of the rock
genre “Seattle Grunge” and front-man for the iconic
band Soundgarden, as well as Audioslave.
“My name is Chester. I had the great privilege of being

family,” Chester Bennington told the mourners at
Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Just two months later,
in July, Bennington took his own life at his home in Los
Angeles.

series launched
this year called
“13 Reasons
Why.”
9. Emory University in Atlanta,
Georgia puts into perspective
the disconcerting statistics
on suicide. These include
some of the following:
The Statistics of
Suicide
10. SUICIDE STATS
• Every year 34,598 people die from suicide, an
average of 94 people a day
• Across all age groups, suicide is the 11th leading
cause of preventable death
• A staggering 894,950 people attempt suicide each
year, which is one person every 38 seconds
• On average, emergency rooms across the country
see nearly 400,000 patients a year for self-inflicted
injuries
• College campuses deal with an average of 1,000
suicides annually
• Among young adults aged 15 to 24, suicide is the
third-leading cause of preventable death
• Among people aged 25 to 34, suicide is the
second-leading cause of preventable death
11. Why Do People
Become
Suicidal?
Number of factors play into
why a person might become
suicidal:
•Addiction to alcohol
•Drugs to depression
•Bipolar disorders
•Eating disorders, such as
anorexia.
12. Why Do People
Become
Suicidal?
Complicating matters is the fact that a
vast majority of people living with
mental illness use alcohol and drugs to
self-medicate, which can lead to
addiction and magnify whatever mental
disorder is plaguing them. This is known
as a dual diagnosis or a co-occurring
disorder.
13. Managing
Addiction and
Mental Illness
Both mental illness and addiction are
treatable conditions that people can
recover from.
Each illness though, must first be
diagnosed, which isn’t always a simple
matter of seeing a family physician
before the conditions can be treated
individually.
14. Project Semicolon
Project Semicolon notes that 75
percent of suicide victims share their
plans ahead of time.
Therefore, it’s incumbent on friends,
family, educators and everyone to
reach out to those they believe
might be struggling. Even small
actions can make the difference to
saving a person’s life.
15. Sadly, 31-year-old Amy
Bleuel, Project Semicolon’s
founder, lost her more than
20-year fight with mental
illness and took her own life
earlier this year. Michael
Shields, CEO of the project,
had this to say:
16. “Today, although sad, we’re
reminded of the reason why Project
Semicolon exists. Suicide has the
ability to strike at the heart of the
very cause aims to eliminate it.
Today we lost a giant and from this
day on, together, we’ll carry her
legacy forward.”
