Teen depression can be caused by a variety of factors including gender, stress, lifestyle, family issues, physical activity, differences, death, loss, abuse and stress. The effects of depression in teens include suicidal thoughts, drug and alcohol use, changes in physical behavior, failing or avoiding classes, social isolation, and changes in eating and sleeping habits. Depression affects about 19 million Americans annually, with half of those experiencing suicidal thoughts. Around 5-10% of women and 2-5% of men will experience major depressive episodes in their adult lives according to research sources.
