MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
WHAT IS THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM
 CONSIST OF NUMBER OF SEX ORGANS WHICH GIVE
EXISTANCE TO A WELL DEFINED SYSTEM CALLED
MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
 Produces Stores and release The male
gametes(sperms)
 Production of male hormones
WHICH SEX ORGANS GIVE RISE TO MALE
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
PRIMARY
 Testicles
Secondery
Vas efferentia (ductuli efferentes)
epididymis
Vas deferens (ductus deferens)
urethra
Penis
Things to be noted
 Wolffian ducts give rise to
paired vasa deferentia, vasa
efferentia, and the
epididymis
Accessory sex Glands
seminal vesicle (absent in dog)
Prostate gland
Bulbo urethral gland (Cowper’s gland)
 (absent in dog)
Protective supportive & other
structures
1) Scrotum
2) External cremaster and tunica dartos
3) Spermatic cord
4) Sigmoid flexor (absent in horse and dog)
Testes Or testicles
 The testes are 2 small oval shaped organs
that are found inside the scrotum
 Produce hormone testosterone
 Produce sperm cells
 Containing seminiferous tubules (lined
with germinal epithelium that produce
spermatozoa & also Contain Sertoli cells
that provide nutrition to developing
sperms)
Vas efferentia
 A network of small tubes in the testicle
that helps move sperm cells (male
reproductive cells) from the testicle to
the epididymis
 Lead from the rete testis
Epididymis
 The epididymis is a duct-like organ that
connects the testis to the vas deferens
1. Head or caput
°It stores the sperms until they are ready
for maturation(sperm are not motile at this
stage
2. Corpus or body
° It is the long coiled tube, where sperms
mature
3.Tail or cauda
°It stores the mature sperm and is
connected to the vas deferens.
Vas deferens
 A coiled tube made of fibers &
muscles which propels sperm
into the urethra during
ejaculation.
Urethra
 The urethra is a fibromuscular tube which serves as
the terminal region of both the male urinary and
reproductive systems.
1. Prostatic urethra
The part of the urethra that carries seminal fluid through the
prostate gland to produce the semen that will be ejaculated
2.Membranous urethra
The membranous urethra is the narrowest and tightest part of
the urethra, so it helps you hold urine in. It’s surrounded by a
circular muscle called a sphincter.
3.Spongy (or penile) urethra
the longest part of the male urethra, and is contained
in the corpus spongiosum of the penis
Penis
 The male genital organ of higher vertebrates,
carrying the duct for the transfer of sperm during
copulation. In humans and most of the mammals, it
consists largely of erectile tissue and serves also for
the elimination of urine
 As a part of Reproductive system it plays its role as
copulatory organ
Seminal vesicles
 The vesicles may also be called
seminal glands or vesicular glands
 They produce a thick fluid that
contains the sugar fructose,
proteins, citric acid, inorganic
phosphorus, potassium, and
prostaglandins.
Prostate gland
 The prostate is located just below the
bladder and in front of the rectum
 It produces fluid that makes up a part of
semen
 Secretes a slightly alkaline fluid that is
milky or white in appearance and makes
up a portion of semen that is enriched in
zinc and contributes to the alkalinity of
semen that helps neutralize the acidity
of the vaginal tract to prolong the
lifespan of sperm.
Cowper’s gland
 Cowper’s glands are pea sized glands
present inferior to the prostate gland
in the male reproductive system
 Cowper’s gland secretions is to
neutralize traces of acidic urine in the
urethra
Scrotum
 The bag of skin that holds and helps to
protect the testicles
 The scrotum protects testes, as well as
providing a sort of climate control system.
Cyptorchid: condition in which one or both
testicles fail to move from the abdomen,
where they develop before birth, into the
scrotum.
External cremaster and Tunica
Dartus
 External cremaster is a muscle
functions to regulate the
temperature of the testis and to
protect it from extrinsic trauma
 The dartos is a thin sheet of
smooth muscle closely associated
with the skin of the scrotum
Spermatic cord
 A cord-like structure in the male
reproductive system that contains
nerves, blood and lymph vessels,
and the vas deferens (a coiled tube
that carries sperm out of the
testicle)
Sigmoid flexor
 Strong retractor muscles hold
the penis in the “S” shaped
configuration.
 sigmoid flexure or S-shaped
bend along its length
 The sigmoid flexure is
straightened out when the
penis is extended for mating
