Male gaze theory
- 1. Male gaze theory “Pop That” music video analysis
- 2. Women were presented in half-clad clothing, particularly, bikinis while most of the men were dressed with golden jewelleries and sophisticated casual clothing as if they were erudite in terms of dress code etiquettes. Women have also outnumbered men who are included in the music video. This may denote two things, firstly, to engage more male viewers and secondly, to inform the audience that by having a lot of women who dress promiscuously, they are considered as rich or famous. Thus, women are for physical pleasure only or an object to suggest the status of a man. Women are also not considered as important as the men, as most of the time, they are located at the back or their head is not shown in the frame but their curvaceous bodies instead.
- 3. Camera almost always zoomed in to emphasize certain body parts of the female such as their breasts, cleavage, thighs or bum. There was also a part of the music video where women were seen as playful using water guns and having sexual interaction with the same gender. It might suggest that they want to present women as dumb rather than doing respectable actions. In terms of costume, these women had big earrings and bright colourful revealing bikinis or short length skirts.
