This document discusses recycling and environmental education in Malatya, Turkey. 3. Recycling
• “Scrap” means fragmented, wasted material which is broken and
damaged, aged goods or metal piece which is useless in lexical
meaning.
• “Scrap dealer” is the one who purchase and sell scrap material.
• Scrap dealing is a profession which has only 50-55 years of
history in our country which is not known very well by our
people. Since arc furnaces and iron and steel factories opened
after 1950s using scrap metal as raw material, scrap dealing was
activated and number of scrap depots increased in parallel to
the number of factories opened.

4. Recycling
• Scrap dealing consisted of shipping scrap household goods and wastes
collected from houses and limited number of workplaces during 1962s
without treatment has become an industrial sector today. It is not enough
to collect and ship scraps any more; it has become compulsory to separate
wood, glass, fabric, nylon etc purifying foreign particles, to shrink cutting
oxygen or blades, to pack after pressing with machines manufactured
particularly for this purpose (baling with paper), to use polyp buckets and
magnets to save time during loading and unloading, to use portable
containers mounted and dismounted to truck chassis as is in European
countries to facilitate collection and shipment.
• Scrap dealing is not only a waste collecting business it is also an industrial
sector using technologies preparing raw material to production stage.

5. Recycling
• Recyclable scraps such as iron-steel, paper and other metal scraps
are each economical values indispensable for countries’ economies.
Said values are regained without losing thanks to industrial
associations such as scrap dealers in the first stage. Therefore
destruction of minerals and forests on the earth are protected from
being exhausted. Who knows, how many trees are killed and how
large forests are destroyed for one ton of paper? Collection of said
wastes, environment and nature is protected from pollution and
being damaged. If said recycling is not possible, the earth would
become a vessel, airplane, tank, car, train etc graveyard and a waste
area for wasted material.

• Fortunately scraps are used in production of new products…
• Fortunately, facilities were founded to manufacture products
processing said scraps…
• Fortunately, recycling industry (scrap dealers) is available who
collects said scraps and prepares for recycling in said facilities…
• Fortunately we are available…
• We believe we are doing a useful business for country, and
humanity as well as commercial meaning…

7. Solid Wastes
• As is all over the world, the most challenging environmental problem
encountered by people is wastes in large allocation units.
• Household solid wastes are composed of organic wastes as 68 % and
remaining are paper, cardboard, textile, plastics, leather metal, wood,
glass and ashes.
• Approximately 65 thousand tons of household wastes are produced in
a day in our country.
• There are three basic principal of the management of solid wastes in
our country and on the world. Generating less waste, recycling wastes
and disposing thereof without damaging environment.

8. Solid Wastes
• Treating all services from collection of wastes, to storage or disposing
within the framework of a schedule and evaluating and recycling said
wastes is called as "environment friendly waste management".
• Wastes not stored as appropriate causes underground and surface
water pollution, generation of pests, malodors to reek of, visual
pollution and disease carrying bacteria to be spread by means of
various animals.
• If we do not reduce waste at source, we may not breath sometimes
later within the range of waste hills.
• If we do not want coming generations to encounter waste hills, we
have to consume conscious and generate less waste.

9. Solid Wastes
• First waste disaster in our country happened in Istanbul, Umraniye district on
28.04.1993. Ground was subsided since wastes were not handled in conformity
with the procedure to which wastes were dumped for 20 years.
• There are only 11 landfill waste collection areas of 3215 municipalities in our
country.
• There is only one active compost facility in our country.
• Houses, working places and buildings used by any means (including empty
buildings) are subject to environment tax which are located within municipal region
and adjacent areas and benefiting solid waste collection and sewerage services of
the municipalities.

10. Recycling2
• Natural resources are not unlimited and these resources
certainly will be exhausted if they are not used carefully.
Developed countries noticed this reality with energy crisis
as well as prevention of waste of resources and efforts to
increase living standards sought and developed new
methods for recycling and reuse of waste material.
European Union provided recycling of waste material under
light of the same reality. (Curi, Kocasoy, 1982)
• Developing countries are also required to end waste of
resources and to search for recycling and reuse methods
for materials which have economical value in order to
benefit natural resources in the long term and maximum
which tries to get developed and encounters economical
challenges.

11. Recycling2
• Recycling and reuse of materials such as iron, steel,
copper, lead, paper, plastics, rubber and glass will
reduce amount of foreign exchange paid for scrap
material imported to meet requirements of the
country as well as prevent natural resources from being
exhausted and will save energy substantially. Another
subject which is as much important as those subjects
mentioned above is that decrease in the amount of
solid wastes and thus prevention of environmental
pollution as well. Reduction of quantity and volume of
solid wastes is a great advantage for those countries
which do not have enough area to landfill solid waste.

12. Recycling2
• According to researches, energy required for
recycling material is a lot less than that required to
extract metal from mineral quarries. That is to say
that energy required to produce 1 ton of aluminium
using recycled metal is 4% of that energy consumed
for aluminium to be produced using mineral.
Similarly; energy required to recycle copper
compounds is 13% of that energy required to get
said metal from mineral quarries and this figure is
19% for iron-steel. (Lyons and Tonkin, 1975).
Similarly recycling of 1 ton used paper saves 17 trees
and 4100 kilowatt hour energy and this is equall to
the electrical energy used by a family for a period of
1 year.

13. Recycling2
• Reusable material are produced using recycling waste material.
For example; glass, metal, plastic and paper/cardboard are
evaluated as a new raw material applying various treatments.
Production of new bottle, box, plastics, paper and fertilizer using
said waste material as raw material is called recycling. First step
of a healthy recycling system is collection of these materials
separating at the resource. When said wastes having recyclable
quality are mixed with other wastes, secondary products made of
said material have less quality and cleaning process might be
encountered some problems with. Therefore, the most important
step of recycling is separation at the resource and collecting with
separate bins.
• Which materials are recyclable material:
• Metal, plastics and paper and cardboard used n food and drink
packages constitute important part of recyclable material exist in
the waste. Besides bone, pieces of textile cloth are recyclable in
special separation facilities.

14. The Importance Of Recycling
• 1. Saves our natural resources
• Resources on the earth reduces each passing day since world population
increase and consumption behaviour changes. Therefore we have to
reduce consumption, recycle wastes having gradable quality and use
natural resources in more efficient way. Hence, recycling is quite essential
for preservation of natural resources and efficient use thereof. For
example; we can ensure the trees in the forest are cut less by means of
recycling paper. Similarly, recycling plastic wastes saves petroleum.
• 2. Energy Save
• Recycling saves energy decreasing number of processes during industrial
production. For example; metal drink cans are melted directly during
recycling process and converted to new product and mineral ore and
purification thereof is not required before production of said metal
material. Accordingly, 96% of the energy could be saved by recycling an
aluminium can. Similarly energy required for reprocessing the paper
separated in solid waste is 50% less than that of energy required normal
production process. Similarly; recycling of glass and plastic wastes can
save significant amount of energy.

15. The Importance Of Recycling
• 3. Reduction of waste quantity
• By recycling treatment, waste quantity is reduced and less area and less
energy are used in storage and transportation of said waste materials. Said
reduction is not significant for household waste as well as it constitutes a
significant proportion when evaluated in respect of volume.
• 4. Recycling means investment to the future and economy;
• Recycling is an economical investment in long term. As a result of
reduction in raw material and exhausted natural resources, economical
problems may arise and recycling will have an important influence on the
economy at this point. New employment opportunities will be provided
and new generations will have the opportunity to benefit from natural
resources.
• Beyond all aforementioned, recycling;
• Will ensure natural resources to be used in most efficient manner and is
the most important solid waste management method which can legate as
much as possible amount of natural resources.

• Beyond recycling and reuse, conversion of compounds in the
waste products using their specifications by means of
chemical, physical and biochemical methods to other
products or energy is called "recycle".
• Recycle preserves our natural resources, saves energy and
contributes economy reducing waste material and invests to
the future.
• Works have been done for long times on recycling processes
of the wastes in Turkey. Waste material such as glass, paper,
cardboard, plastics and metal wastes are collected from waste
collection fields and by street waste pickers and used as raw
material source in various industries.

• Collection of used packaging material and other gradable wastes as
clean and separate from other wastes is the first stage of recycling
process. Separately collected recyclable wastes must be separated
according to types in order to apply recycling processes.
• Approximately 15-20 % of wastes generated in Turkey is recyclable
waste material.
• Packaging is not a waste but is also a raw material. Lets collect
packages separately which are not possible to recycle.

• Lets recycle used papers using papers and notebooks economic.
• We can recycle the papers we used collecting and we can prevent
environmental pollution.
• 44% of the letters sent by people to each other are not read. One
ton used paper protects 16 pine trees when recycled and one ton
newsprint paper prevents 8 pine trees to be cut when recycled.
• Stopping only 100,000 family to write unnecessary letters saves
150,000 trees each year from being cut.
• A person consumes 8 months in his/her life to open unnecessary
correspondence letters.

• One office staff wastes 81 kgs of high quality paper in a
year.
• Lets prefer cloth bags, basket and nets instead of
disposable plastic bags.
• Plastics are the material which require the longest
decomposition period in the nature and are hard to
decompose. Therefore said material must be collected
separately and recycled as much as possible.
• Plastic packaging wastes are used as raw material in
secondary production converting granules after washing.
They are used for greenhouse cover, plastic bag in
automotive industry, vinyl floor covering, drain pipe, fiber
and filling material, automotive spare part production.

• We save 95% of energy by recycling metal and plastics
when compared to new production.
• 100 liters of oil is saved for each ton of glass recycled.
• Glass bottle survives 4000 years in the nature and plastic
1000 years, chewing gum 5 years and bear can for 10-100
years and cigarette filter survives 2 years in the nature.
• Recycle of glass bottle and jars have been applied for quite
older times among household wastes. Glass bottle and jar
and other glass wastes are converted to glass powder after
breaking. Glass powder is mixed with sand, lime stone and
soda ash and converted to new products shaping in high
temperature.

of Malatya province directorate of national education

23. 190 school directors were invited to be informed of
the project, and they were delivered a conference
about the importance of recycling and environment

24. The teachers of Technology and design Classes were delivered a
training to raise awareness about recycling and they were
requested to ask their students to collect non-used-materials
and produce something out of them.

25. Some English teachers who are potential ones to write EU
projects were informed about the recycling and environment

To be a member of the project, 24 candidates applied for training on
recycling workshops.
They were first given some information about the project and then, they
were told what to do within the project process.
Each trainee, then, gave information to those who worked in their own
workplaces.

teachers at 803 schools will ve delivered
conferances about the importance of recycling
and environment. Some animations will be
displayed and brochures will be delivered to
the target group and also banners will be
used.
