Digital literacy: key issues

This document outlines key issues related to changes in the ICT landscape, learning landscape, research environment, libraries and content, and organizational environment that will impact higher education institutions in the coming years. Some of the main changes discussed are the rise of mobile devices, cloud computing, open access to content and data, blended and flipped learning models, MOOCs, emphasis on applied research, digitization of content, and new modes of delivery including online programs. Jisc's summer of student innovation program received a large amount of engagement from students. 37 ideas were submitted by students, with 33 reaching their target number of votes to be considered for funding. The program received over 6,000 votes and extensive social media attention. In the end, 4 projects were selected for further funding based on student votes and ideas. An additional 2 new projects emerged from the final event. The program was very successful at engaging students and crowdsourcing ideas for new digital initiatives.

This session showcased collaborative work that Jisc and its partners are undertaking to create a pan-European e-infrastructure solution through the EC funded EUDAT project. SURFSara outlined the approach to research data infrastructure in the Netherlands alongside Jisc's approach for a UK infrastructure.

Digital storytelling - Richard Beggs

Digital storytelling workshops were first introduced at Ulster University in 2015 and were very popular, booking out within 20 minutes and requiring additional sessions to meet demand. Feedback was very positive, with some saying it was the best training they had received in 20 years. The digital storytelling approach inspired others within the university to use it for various purposes, such as recruitment and assessment. It has now been expanded to other institutions and contexts, including early career researchers and undergraduate students.

There is growing pressure on universities to better manage research data due to funder policies requiring data sharing. The National Bibliographic Knowledgebase (NBK) will aggregate bibliographic data from libraries and other sources to inform collection management decisions and user resource discovery. The NBK is being developed in phases, with a beta resource discovery interface launching in January 2018 containing data from 75 libraries. A wound is a break in the integrity of the skin or tissues, which may be associated with disruption of the structure and function. Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions. Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc. Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.
