Confronting today’s environmental challenges, such as climate change and water sustainability, requires the environmental movement to respond with an unprecedented level of creativity and energy. However, command and control campaigns that are centrally-organized and pushed via grassroot methods, are not sufficient to unleash the scale of response needed to be successful.
In this webinar (http://www.smallworldlabs.com/learn/webinars/nwf) we took a look into a focused NWF online community that allows members to connect with one another and take action on campaigns and local environmental sustainability projects. Courtney Cochran from NWF and Lindsay Razzaz from Small World Labs walked through what was learned during the buildout of this community, as well as some of the technological tools introduced and measurable results achieved throughout the process.

THE FIVE CONDITIONS OF COLLECTIVE
IMPACT SUCCESS
Collective impact is more rigorous and specific than
collaboration among organizations.
There are five conditions that, together, lead to meaningful
results from collective impact:
1.Common Agenda: All participants share a vision that
includes a common understanding of the problem and a
joint approach to solving the problem through agreed-upon
actions.
2.Shared Measurement: All participants agree on the ways
success will be measured and reported, with a short list of
common indicators identified and used for learning and
improvement.

objectives, and create common motivation.

The LIVESTRONG Foundation’s Community Impact Project (CIP)
replicates programs that have demonstrated success in supporting
people affected by cancer within one city, state or region of the United
States. Since its inception, the CIP has invested more than $4 million to
replicate twelve programs in more than 600 communities, serving tens
of thousands of survivors in the process. Using replicable programs
with proven success has allowed the LIVESTRONG Foundation to
eliminate the cost of developing new programs and provide more
immediate implementation of programs to help cancer survivors, their
families and health care professionals
24. PDG Assem Abdel Razek
Phase 1
Organizations apply to have their programs replicated across the
United States through the Community Impact Project and after a
thorough review, the Foundation chooses 3 to 4 programs for
national expansion that we believe address an unmet need within
the cancer community. These projects are funded through the E.
Lee Walker Award which supports innovative programs that help
cancer survivors.
25. PDG Assem Abdel Razek
Phase 2
Next, hospitals, cancer centers, universities and community-based
organizations apply to bring one or more of the selected Programs to their
respective communities. Applications are vetted and, depending on their
individual location, community served and demonstrated need for the
Program(s), are then approved for the third phase of the CIP. Selected
organizations then are slated to receive training and funds to implement
each Program.
26. PDG Assem Abdel Razek
Phase 3
The third phase of the CIP involves an interactive
voting campaign where the LIVESTRONG community
votes to determine where funding goes. Each of the
selected organizations appeals for support to the general
public to bring their respective Programs to their
communities. Since 2010 nearly one thousand
organizations have participated in the voting process for
the CIP, garnering a total of more than one million votes
online from around the country.

larger segment of your community the
opportunity to proactively address issues
where they live.
Community members with a vested interest
in a project are more likely to make sure that
the project lives on.
