• Draw 5 buttons using dark graphite pencil lines.
• Connect the arrow keys and space bar alligator
clips to your graphite button drawings – one
alligator clip per button.
• Draw lines connecting button with alligator clip
to another button you draw that will be the
button you press to play the piano
• Play the piano using your buttons on the paper.
• Go to http://tinyurl.com/lgnq6td to
open the Scratch piano keyboard.
• Click on the piano to focus the
computer’s attention on the piano.
• Plug the MaKey MaKey in USB and
connect alligator clips to the four arrow
keys and space bar.
• Connect one alligator clip to “Earth” for
grounding people.
• Connect the alligator clip for Earth
to the metal clip at the top of the
clipboard.
Objective: Learn how circuits work and create a
project that demonstrates a working circuit.

2. • Are the lines dark enough?
• Do the lines cross over each other?
• Is the alligator clip touching the pencil drawing?
• Have you clicked on the piano to bring browser
focus to the piano?
• Is your sound turned on?
• Is the MaKey MaKey plugged in the USB?
• Are you grounded (touching the metal part of
clipboard)?
• What other objects could you use as controllers?
• Design an interactive presentation of a math, science,
social studies, or reading lesson.

Standards Addressed:
ALEX.SC.4.1. Describe how electrical circuits can be used to produce light, heat, sound, and magnetic fields.
ALEX.TE.3-5.12 Create a product using digital tools. ALEX.TE.6-8.14 Use digital tools to generate new ideas, products, or processes.
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
ALEX.ELA.4.16 Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines,
animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in
which it appears. [RI.4.7] ALEX.ELA.5.16. Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to
locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. [RI.5.7] ALEX.ELA.6.17 Integrate information presented in
different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue.
