Grade 7 – FCAT Sample Problem

Read this passage about Jane Goodall and her work with chimpanzees. Then
answer the questions that follow.
JANE GOODALL (1934– )
Imagine traveling to the other side of the world, to a deep, tropical jungle far
away from your family and friends, all of this in the hope of seeing a
chimpanzee. Then, once you are there, you wake up every morning before
dawn, crawl through the brush, climb up mountains, and sit quietly, waiting
just to catch a glimpse of some chimpanzees. And what if you did that every
day for weeks and months? That is exactly what Jane Goodall did. When she
began her research in 1960, women rarely went out alone to do fieldwork like
this. Nowadays there are many men and women ethologists* who have
studied animals in the wild. But Jane Goodall was the first person to make it
her life’s work to study a single species in the wild. Jane Goodall grew up

in England and was determined to go to Africa to see the animals there
and learn everything she could about them. She worked to save up
enough money for the trip to Africa. In Africa, she met Louis Leakey, a
famous anthropologist,* and she worked with him for a year. Louis
Leakey believed that there was much to be learned from studying the
great apes in their natural habitat, and he thought Jane Goodall was
the person to do it. Jane traveled to the Gombe Stream Reserve in
Tanzania. For the first eighteen months, she seldom saw chimpanzees
close-up. But she watched and waited, waited and watched, until the
chimps got used to her and started to come out of the brush. With her
patience and gentleness, Jane Goodall earned the trust of the
chimpanzees, and she got to know them well. Because Jane Goodall
stayed and learned so much, we now know a great deal about the lives
and deaths of chimpanzees over generations. As an authority on
chimpanzees, Jane Goodall has shared what she knows with people all
over the world to protect the animals she has come to understand so
well.

• In the sixteenth century, an age of great marine and terrestrial exploration,
Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition to sail around the world. As a young
Portuguese noble, he served the king of Portugal, but he became involved in the
quagmire of political intrigue at court and lost the king's favor. After he was
dismissed from service to the king of Portugal, he offered to serve the future
Emperor Charles V of Spain.
• A papal decree of 1493 had assigned all land in the New World west of 50 degrees
W longitude to Spain and all the land east of that line to Portugal. Magellan
offered to prove that the East Indies fell under Spanish authority. On September
20, 1519, Magellan set sail from Spain with five ships. More than a year later, one
of these ships was exploring the topography of South America in search of a water
route across the continent. This ship sank, but the remaining four ships searched
along the southern peninsula of South America. Finally they found the passage
they sought near a latitude of 50 degrees S. Magellan named this passage the
Strait of All Saints, but today we know it as the Strait of Magellan.
