The document discusses how Intercountry Committees (ICCs) can facilitate Global Grants between Rotary districts in different countries. It provides examples of successful ICC partnerships between Rotary districts in Southern Africa and Germany that have funded projects related to water, sanitation, early childhood education, and youth programs. The key factors for effective ICC partnerships are selecting projects that meet local needs, having trustworthy club partners, and open communication between the sponsor and host countries throughout the grant process. ICCs allow Rotarians to network across borders and develop thoughtful global grant proposals that make a meaningful impact.

Historical flashback:
Old connections and new friendships:
Some may work lifelong, some become obsolete.
Tradition is a lantern,
stupid people cling to it,
For wise ones it lightens the way.

Criteria for successful grants:
Assure that the project is truly needed.
Be aware of the focus areas for GGs.
Clubs in the host country must be trustworthy.
Develop contacts with the cooperating partners.
Expert advice by TRF and enthusiastic support in
your own club are essential.

Misunderstandings
• One size fits all: a successful gardening project in Asia may be
inadequate in the Namibian desert but promising in slums.
• A donor wish may not be compatible with the local need: Ask
local RCs, make the ICC a market place of ideas. Regional
assessment for GGs is indispensible.
• Not all wishes are true needs: Endoscopes for specialized
departments in government hospitals are just „nice to have“.
• German solutions for similar problems (violence of school kids,
drugs) may need different approaches in SA.

Simple but self evident:
Partnership is crucial,
Confidence and trust in each other are essential.
But even then
Cross-checks are indispensable.
