In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.

Night at the Races – You BET we had a great time!
On 29 September, ladies and gentlemen from the Rotary clubs of Northcliff and the E-Club of
Southern Africa D9400 arrived at Marks Park ready to bet the night away - dressed in the
Gatsby theme!
The annual Night of the Races event attracted club members, guests and sponsors and
before long the Master of Jockeys started the races.
The races and jockeys were sponsored by a number of individuals and companies, and others
were given naming rights for the horses. The list of names for jockeys and the horses
certainly attracted a number of laughs! As the races started, people were anxious to see their
horse win but as the horses were heading for the finishing line…. support moved to the horse
that they had bet on. It was a fun evening.
The event and proceeds are shared by both clubs. Community projects run by the Clubs will
benefit. Thank you to all those who supported the evening.
There were prizes for the best dressed couple as well as for the best dressed individual male
and female. In addition, there were lucky draws and an auction for a beautiful painting done
by famous artist Rtn Koos Bronkhorst of the E-Club. We’re betting that next year’s event will
be even bigger and better!

Basic Education & Literacy is promoted in the Rotary calendar in September and it’s a time
when Rotary clubs and districts highlight Rotaract by joining in projects with their Rotaract
clubs. Clubs are encouraged to :
● Initiate adult education class
● Involve youngsters / college students as teachers
● Initiate e-learning / happy school projects
● Distribute libraries
● Develop traffic park for children
● Arrange traffic awareness lectures in schools & colleges
The E-Club of Southern Africa D9400 had the privilege of hosting a delegation from
Germany (D1820) at two events. The first one was to meet with Amanda Blankfield-Koseff,
who demonstrated the Early Childhood Development programme. Present were President
Carolyn Khoury, PP Annemarie Mostert and Chairman of the ICC Germany-South Africa,
PDG Prof Bernhard Maisch from the Rotary Club of Marbourghand his wife Inge. They were
joined by Wolfgang and Helga Ball and Irmgard Konig to discuss the excellent value of the
Alexander project to be undertaken by the E-Club. The delegation will also be visiting
projects in Haenertsburg, Cape Town and Namibia.
After the ECD visit, 18 Rotarians, partners and D9400’s Foundation Chairperson, PDG Greg
Stathacopoulos, attended a delightful lunch “Under the Oak Tree” at the Johannesburg
Country Club. The company, food and ambiance were excellent.
During October, Rotary International encourages clubs and Rotarians to engage in
Economic and Community development programmes and we welcome Rotarians from other
countries as they visit our district and country to investigate various projects.
Our club looks forward to working with our new friends from Germany and we wish them a
wonderful journey through our beautiful country.

PP Liana van der Walt was kept busy with a
Club-to-Club visit from Sweden. The visitors
were from 3 different clubs in Sweden
(Landskrona, Landskrona Citadel and
Glumslôv).
The visiting team awarded PP Liana v d Walt a well-deserved Saphire PHF for Service above
Self for the last 11 years.
An impromptu ceremony was held in the scenic West Coast (Table Mountain in the
background). This DRF money will be allocated to a Project of the E Club. The visiting team
sent best wishes to the members of the E Club.

UJ BOOK PROJECT
When the five Rotaract clubs were formed at the University of Johannesburg, they
embarked on a project to get books to the Kruger National Park area and Phalaborwa.
Two full containers of books (and the containers) were donated by the Humanitarian
Centre in Bedfordview.
The project gained momentum with the generous donations of R 50,000 from Sesego
Cares, and R 7,000 from Dr Peta Thomas (UJ).
DGE Charles Deiner, PDG Shirley Downie and PP Billy Phillips (RC Bedfordview) are putting
together the final touches to this programme, in collaboration with E-Club member Dr Peta
Thomas (UJ). Two containers filled with about 24 tons of selected educational books will be
delivered to the Numbi Gate in Mpumalanhga and another container will be sent to
Phalaborwa. The project will be finalised in November.
We will arrange a special trip to these areas to be there when they open the containers and
start the distribution of the books to the local schools and communities. If you'd like to go
along, please let Shirley Downie know: Shirley@phomella.co.za. We don’t have confirmed
dates yet but it will be before the end of the year.

October 2017 was filled with Health projects!
We started off with the Rotary Family Health Days between 3-5 October, then the Filadelfia
Ark Wellness Day on 14 October followed by the World Hand Washing Day on 15 October.
E-Club member and RFHD Director, Sue Paget and her team did a sterling job once again
in ensuring that this year’s RFHD event was a success. PP Annemarie Mostert, PP Kanthan
Pillay and Rtn Sarah Britten were involved in the media plans which informed hundreds of
thousands of community members of the free medical service in their area.
PDG Shirley Downie serves on the Rotary Foundation Fund Development Committee in
Evanston and RI Foundation Trustee Chairperson Paul Netzel (2017/18) served as the
chairperson for this committee during the last Rotary year. He still has an advisory
position on the FDC. It was wonderful that he was able to attend the RFHD launch event in
Hoedspruit, Mpumalanga. We were also honoured to have PDG/Rotary Foundation
Coordinator (serving for three years) Dr Patrick Coleman as RIFT Chairperson’s special aide
during Chairperson Paul’s visits to South Africa. Dr Coleman attended the launch and
visited Cape Town where Trustee Chair Paul attended RFHD programmes and other events.
As protocol serves, Dr Patrick was the host special aide (as RFC) and as always, he did a
great job! Thanks to Dr Coleman for his involvement.

Rotary Family Health Days 2017 goes to Mpumalanga
The National Department of Health (NDoH) in collaboration with the Gift of the Givers and
Doctors without Borders, hosted the annual Rotary Family Health Day in Thulamahashe,
Mpumalanga between 3 – 5 October.
The event, launched in 2012 by Rotarians for Family Health & Aids Prevention in
partnership with the NDoH, is aimed at providing holistic healthcare services to
disadvantaged communities that would otherwise not have access to the services.
Healthcare services offered during this year’s event included:
TB screening and testing; HIV counselling and testing; Vitamin A supplementation and
healthy lifestyle information; Immunization for polio and measles as well as deworming;
Health screening (blood pressure, cholesterol, hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, malaria and
diabetes).
There was a support centre for adolescent girls and young women, and consultation for
family planning methods was also offered.

Filadelfia Ark Wellness Day
A week after the RFHD progamme, our club - together with Waterkloof RC and Interact
members - hosted the Wellness Day at Filadelfia Ark.
This was very well organised by PP Liana van der Walt and PP Dr Wilma Lotter. The
atmosphere was electric and hundreds of people received free medical advice and services.
PP Dr Wilma Lotter will write referrals and do follow ups where necessary. Free medical
services will be offered, thanks to the generosity of Dr Lotter and her colleagues, and some
patients are going to be part of trials for Osteoarthritis, Diabetes, Hyperlipedemia and
Emphysema.
Grateful thanks from the RC of Waterkloof and the Rotary E-Club to all who made this day
so successful - including our partners, Villa Nova, Pink Drive, Circle of life, Synexus, People
living with Cancer, WAR, caring doctors, students of University of Pretoria, learners of Silver
Oaks International School, SAMIVA, professional friends in the medical field, friends and
learners.
We are very grateful to the Groonkloof Butcher for their generous donation of boerewors
and rolls for 650 people on the day.
This was the 3rd Wellness day at Filadelfia Ark. Each year gets bigger and better.
Dr Lotter expressed gratitude to all the Rotarians and friends who helped to make this such
a success! Tjaart, Hannelie, Johan and Estelle all worked hard welcoming and assisting the
residents. Cornelia handled the Drop Box very well, and Prof Gawie was on the go all day!
Thanks also for the donation of PSA test kits from President Carolyn Khoury and the
jumping castle, sweets and ice-cream from Rtn Annemarie Featherstone.

UNESCO’s World Heritage List
The ǂKhomani Cultural Landscape is located at our border with Botswana and Namibia in the
northern part of the country, coinciding with the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park (KGNP).
The large expanse of sand contains evidence of human occupation from the Stone Age to the present
and is associated with the culture of the formally nomadic ǂKhomani San people and the strategies
that allowed them to adapt to harsh desert conditions.
They developed a specific ethnobotanical knowledge, cultural practices and a worldview related to the
geographical features of their environment. The ǂKhomani Cultural Landscape bares testimony to the
way of life that prevailed in the region and shaped the site over thousands of years.
Rotary partners with Habitat for Humanity
More than 1 billion people around the world live in inadequate housing according to the United
Nations Centre for Human Settlements. Through a partnership between Rotary and Habitat for
Humanity, more will have access to safe and affordable housing across the globe.
The partnership will facilitate collaboration between local Rotary clubs and local Habitat for Humanity
organisations, enabling Habitat to extend their volunteer pool by tapping into Rotary’s 1.2 million
members in 200 countries and regions.
“Habitat’s aim to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope aligns perfectly with
Rotary’s commitment to make positive, lasting change in communities around the world,” said Rotary
General Secretary John Hewko. “With Habitat’s expertise and the power of Rotary’s volunteer
network, we will help build the foundation for stronger communities.”
Gates Foundation to host 2017 World Polio
Day
By Rotary International
For the first time, Rotary’s World Polio Day celebration heads to the
West Coast of the United States. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,
one of our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, will host
the annual event at its campus in downtown Seattle, Washington on
24 October
Only 11 new cases of polio caused by wild poliovirus have been reported this year, all in Pakistan
and Afghanistan. At the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Bill Gates renewed and
increased his foundation’s pledge to match, 2-to-1, all contributions to The Rotary Foundation that
are designated for polio eradication efforts. Rotary’s commitments and pledges from world
governments and corporate donors, counted along with the Gates Foundation’s pledge, have made
the campaign to eliminate polio worldwide $1.3 billion stronger.
Last year, Rotarians in more than 90 countries registered over 1,400 events and fundraisers to
mark World Polio Day in their communities and draw attention to Rotary’s leadership in the fight
against polio. With your contributions and advocacy, as well as the Gates Foundation match, we’re
aiming to raise $250,000 during this year’s celebration.
Register your event, or find resources for planning one, at endpolio.org. Rotary clubs across the
globe have already registered more than 700 events.
