Haydn had a good singing voice and began singing in a church choir at age five, where he obtained a good knowledge of music. He learned to play various instruments including keyboards, wind instruments, and timpani. Haydn had a great respect for his musical contemporaries Mozart and Beethoven, recognizing their talents.
