KERRANG! SCANS.
FRONT COVER ASPECTS.
This cover line is made
from an image and
shapes the bright lime
signifies a new interview
that no one has had
before. This contrasts to
the black behind
background, along with
the house style of yellow
background and white
writing.
“6 Amazing posters” Shows
the buyer what posters are
and what they’re getting, also
the images are edited to look
like polaroids that have been
dropped.

The use of white writing
connotes purity and
goodness, with the contrast
of the black which connotes
death and the red with links
to blood. Also only people
who listen to music of this
genre will know of his
passing.

This skyline is in bold colors
to attract attention, the use of
yellow and black, because
black stands out very clearly
against yellow, and then the
red “2” this is emphasis on
the amount of “Build-’emyourself rockstars”. A cover
line is also overlapping.

The old school typewriter
font symbolizes and old band
coming back, also the use of
their logo because it’s a
universal symbol within
Kerrang!’s target market.

“Paramore Invade The
UK” Powerful looking
image, looks like a
blood splatter, connotes
bloodshed and gore and
she looks like Boudicca.
CONTENTS PAGE ASPECTS
Part of Avenged
Sevenfold’s logo
contains a
bat, hence the batstreet boys pun.

The yellow
and black
writing links
to the front
page and the
striking
colours make
the
subheadings
very clear.

The scuffy font
contrasts to the rest
of the contents page
but correlates with
the rest of the
magazines casual
style.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
ASPECTS
Kerrang! Have also
made the choice not
to sensor any of the
swearing in the
prose showing that
their magazine is
aimed at an older
audience that can be
exposed to swearing
without complaint.
This also follows the
attitude of the target
genre/audience the
magazine has.
Having this inset
image of Billie Joe
“before the one
minute warning”
shows that he isn’t
always angry,
smashing stuff, and
screaming profanity,
the image of him
singing to a fan
shows he is sweet
and cares for his
fans, this gives a
more equal
representation.

The pink/green colour
scheme of Green Day’s
¡Uno! Album. Also
Kerrang! Dropped their
house style to adapt
Green Day’s style shows
their dedication to the
band.
The action
shots of Billie
Joe smashing
his guitair are
action shots
that make the
incident seem
realer and
become
fresher in the
readers mind
as the events
happened last
year.
The word
motherfu**kers is
censored with
images from
their album
¡Uno! Giving
the spread a
consistent feel.
NME FR0NT C0VER ASPECTS
“New NME” they have
recently ungone a big
change
aesthetically, and in the
content, this label
would also tell old
readers of NME “it’s
okay, it’s still the same
magazine” also the
“%#@!3” is code for
swearing, giving NME
and older target
audience.
Nme have
interviewed David
Bowie many times
over his career
spanning 50 years
and still going.
Although he hasn’t
released anything for
10 years, hence the
use of
“back…again!”

NME have made the decision
to have an image of the
Bowie not looking into the
camera, this breaks
convention of most magazine
front covers. There are also
objects in the way, the paper
swans in bright colours that
match other cover lines on
the magazine. Also as the
magazine is aimed at an
older audience they might be
more interested in the
content of the magazine then
what it looks like. So they
don’t have to try as hard
because they will have an
older, dedicated following.

90% of the text is on the left hand
side, because of the way
magazines are stacked and the fact
we read left to right top to bottom
mean the most important
information is at the top left, which is
the mast head and the “new NME”
label.
CONTENTS PAGE ASPECTS.
You can tell by
the colours and
layout that this
magazine is not
a pop or hip hop
magazine. The
muted colour
scheme
contrasts with
the bright and
bold red and
white.

House style creates
consistency that is needed
from a magazine like NME
as it has been around so
long. It’s one of the industry
constants. Bold type face
in a stamp like manor gives
it an ordered but slightly old
fashioned feel.

The use of smaller and
much fewer images shows
a older, and possibly more
intelligent audience.

Dry/sarcastic humor
appealing to a witty and
older audience. Also

A sans serif font, the font is
from the same family as the
one used in the contents
page which aides
continuity.
Single column
demonstrates a clear focus
on one element of the
story. A drop cap draws
your eye to te story and
because of the letter “O”
there is a strong cyclical
structure within the video.

Information value: which
denotes importance, here
status levels have been
used. To demonstrate to

person in the article. In this
image, Jake Bugg is in the
foreground and fills almost
a third of the page.
