In the progression from the preliminary task to the full magazine project, the student learned several important lessons about magazine design and layout. For the cover, they improved the professional layout but realized they should have included more articles. For the contents page, they incorporated more images and subheadings but still needed more writing to describe the articles. Overall, they learned to include more features like advertisements and addresses to make the magazine more engaging for readers. While they did not do a double page spread preliminarily, they learned layout techniques like large images and quotes that they applied in their full project.

1. Question 4
Looking back at your ‘Preliminary Task’ what do you feel you have learned in the
progression from it to the full product?
Front Page
In the preliminary project I was less aware
of how a magazine cover should look and
the conventions that went with them. The
College magazine was the first project for
Media I has done, considering that I didn’t
taken this subject for GCSE I think that it
turned out quite well for the first time. In
the preliminary task payed more attention
to the conventional methods on the
placement of the articles for example I put
a left third on this magazine where as on
my ‘full project’ I had a right third. I feel
that I have learned how better to make a
magazine interesting and I also learned
how to work the programs and technology
when I did the preliminary task I became
more comfortable using QuarkXPress and
the cameras that I used to take the photos
for the covers and side pictures. I think I
also developed a style through the two
tasks.
In the progression to the ‘Full Project’ I
think I learned about the layout of the
front cover this helped me to make a more
professionally set out cover although if I
were to do this project again I would have
added more articles tot eh front cover and
filled out the page more to make it look
busy. Like I had done in the ‘preliminary
task’ however in the progression to the
main task I learned that images can be
used as well as article titles this is the
reason I did not put much writing on the
front cover although I now see that I
should have put more articles on the page
to make it look busier and more
interesting as well as giving the reader a
better idea of what the articles are about.

2. Contents Page
In the preliminary contents page I wrote a
lot more and had a lot less images I also
had less pages shown in the index and I
think went a bit too much into detail
writing a bit about every article title. In
the main project I had a lot less writing and
more images I think this worked better in a
sense however more writing under the
images could have been better and given
the reader more of an idea of what the
articles were about. Also in the main
project I had more sub headings in the
index this would have been good as the
audience would be able to pinpoint
something that might interest them at the
time.
In general I learned a lot about layout and
that the contents page should have more
than just articles and explanations on the
page I have looked at this issues and added
some extra features to my contents page
like more subheadings images adverts and
addresses for the magazine I think that
learning about adding extra features has
helped me to progress my magazine and
make it better than the preliminary task.

3. Double Page Spread
I did not do a double page spread for the preliminary task, however I did learn a great
deal about layout through the other two parts of the project for example the large
image and the quote were aspects that I have learned in the layout of DPS’s. I f I were
to do this project again I would have made the image cover both sides of the mage
and written a more interesting article that might appeal to more people.
