Masthead: The heading used for the cover page is a bold
red colour stating the initials of the magazine, this has
deliberately been used to draw attention to the name of the
magazine and gives us an understanding of what's to
come. In addition it also set a colour theme for the
magazine which is continued throughout the rest of the
magazine.
Main Cover line: In this circumstance the Main cover line
is again initials, however this time for the band they are
advertising (Arctic Monkeys). This has been used to
introduce what a large proportion of the magazines will be
about. The white text then infers clarity and boldness into
the magazine, catching the eye of the reader.

Cover lines: The cover line is again a bold white, to keep
structure and form in the magazine. However this time the
text size is noticeably smaller which is due to the magazine
not wanting you to divert your focus from the other
important text such as the Main cover line and Masthead.
Imagery&Positioning: The Imagery used in this is a long
shot, advertising the band as the main focus of the
magazine. The band are placed directed centre of the cover
instantly bringing presence to the magazine. The band
have all been purposely positioned vertical to the camera
whilst glaring directly at it bringing even further presence
to the magazine.

Mise En Scene: Costuming: The band have purposely been dressed to support the genre of music they are meant to
represent. In this case we can observe the use of blacks in both t-shirts and Jeans throughout the band which
compliments the rock culture they were aiming to represent. In addition, we can notice all members have long styled
hair which is almost the norm in rock music and culture.
Props: No props have been used on the page which creates a sort of professionalism to the magazine, this is because
it gives a impression they don't need any props to get across what they want.
Positioning: Already covered.
Lighting: The use of high key lighting has been used to ensure the back ground of sunny California can be seen as
well and to make the band members stand out on the cover page. The lighting also creates a sort of positive vibe to
the magazine creating an atmosphere for the cover.
1

Masthead: The masthead used for the Kerrang magazine is a
white parallel text box stating the name of the magazine. The font
used is a bold narrow heading with what looks like strobe light
crossing through them.
Main Cover line: The main cover line used on the Kerrang edition is a
red font stating the name of the band which will be reviewed upon
throughout the magazine. The colour red itself brings presence and
impact to the magazine making it a good selling point.
Cover lines: This time there are a few cover lines used for the main
page, the first being quotes from the main band being advertised, ‘’ I
could be your worst enemy’’. This is in a black text box with pale white
writing to contrasting out. The second cover line used is text stating the
name of some of the other bands which will be featured in the magazine.
This is done in a read and white text, again to stand out in the magazine
as well as keep colour theme.

Imagery&Positioning: The main feature of the Kerrang cover page
is the image taken of the main band member, Jared Leto, placed
purposely in the centre of the magazine. Another purpose of the
main image is to be used as an example to show what type of genre
this magazine is based around, this is normally portrayed through
the costuming. In addition to the main image there are several
other images scattered around the magazines. These again are
used to introduced other bands featured in the magazine and to
advertise new information on them for example a new album or
single.
Mise en scene: Costuming: The main costuming seen in the cover page is from Jared Leto from the band ’30 Seconds To
Mars’ who has purposely been dressed in a black leather jacket to emphasise not only the metal rock culture he’s in but to
also compliment this new façade that he has revealed his ‘dark side’ though his music. The other costuming seen in the
cover page is a grey printed vest and again a black leather jacket tradition clothing for rock and metal culture.
Positioning: Already covered.
Props: In one of the images a guitar can been seen which would of purposely been capture to the exaggerate the rock vibe
and bring reality in to image.
Lighting: For the Kerrang edition mid key light has been used to compliment the image used and to create a theme for the
magazine to follow.
Masthead: The heading used for the double
page spread continues the tradition theme of
black, white and red. The masthead is a
metallic black using the same abbreviation
as on of the Arctic Monkeys singles ‘ R U
Mine’. The metallic black ensure for a clear
and bold title instantly alerting you of whats
to come. The masthead uses provocative
language to draw attention to the magazine
and to ensnare you to read on.

2

Main Cover line: For this particular double page
spread there isn't really a main cover line however
in a sense the bold beginning letter of the
paragraph could be consider to be a the main
cover line as they both introduce what is to come
as well as draw a lot of attention.
Cover lines: The cover line used for the double
page spread is more of a brief introduction using
bold red text to draw attention to certain bits of
information. This has been used to introduce a
small proportion of what the magazine is about as
well as give us a brief over view of the magazine.

Imagery&Positioning: The double page spread begins with a full page image positioned on the left hand side ensuring no
attention is derived from the text positioned on the right. The image is of the band enjoying the pleasures of being a ‘rock star’
being in California sun shine, which instantly creates idolisation which then encourages you to read on to find the secret of
being a ‘rock star’. In addition the actual band are also in a specific position with the two main vocalists placed in the centre
and the main instrumental band members placed either side.
Mise en scene: Costuming: The band have been purposely dressed in traditional indie clothing, the use of colour black is
primarily used to fit the mood of the music and is extremely common in the genre.
Props: No props have been used on the page which creates a sort of professionalism to the magazine, this is because it gives a
impression they don't need any props to get across what they want.
Positioning: Already covered.
Lighting: The use of high key lighting has been used to ensure the back ground of sunny California can be seen as well and to
make the band members stand out on the cover page. The lighting also creates a sort of positive vibe to the magazine creating
an atmosphere for the cover.
Masthead: The masthead used for the
double page spread is a review comment
incased in quote marks. The review is a
comments of Metallica’s new attitude toward
music and is displayed with a bold black font
on the centre left page.

2

Main Cover line: The Metallica double page
spread again hasn't really got a main cover line
however the black strip under the masthead
could be consider the main cover line. The cover
line gives a brief description on Metallica’s new
approach toward music and is complimented with
a black washed strip contain this information.
Cover lines: The cover line used for the Metallica
double page spread is again a bold black letter to
draw attention to the information below and
allows the reader to start the paragraph in a
interesting manner.

Imagery&Positioning: The Mettalica spread begins with a full page image positioned on the right hand side this time again
ensuring no attention is derived from the text positioned on the left. The image is of the band pondering and almost
questioning the reader, as to what they might think about Metallica new attitude to rock and if it is for the better. ’. In addition
the actual band are also in a specific position with the main vocalist placed in the centre and the three instrumental band
members placed around.
Mise en scene: Costuming: The band have been purposely dressed in traditional indie clothing, the use of colour black is
primarily used to fit the mood of the music and is extremely common in the genre.
Props: The only props visible in the double page spread is one of the band member sun glass, which created the impression of
individuality and shows he differs from the other band members, giving and edgy feel to the band in general.
Positioning: Already covered.
Lighting: The use of mid key lighting has been used to compliment both the bad member skin tone and costume choice to
ensure they are looking their best for the spread. The lighting here creates neutrality, which in a sense give a form of
professionalism.

Masthead: The masthead used for the contents page is actually the
same as the masthead used in the cover page however this time we
have an additional white bold title exclaiming ‘CONTENTS’. The
masthead again uses the tradition black, white and red theme
continued throughout the magazine ensuring both stability and
fluidity in the contents page. In addition the white and red text
contrasting against the black strip also implies it is trying to draw
attention as it is introducing a new page as well as giving you a brief
over view of what's to come.
Main Cover line: The main cover lines used for the contents pages is
simple bold, black, capital text used on a white back ground stating
the name of the band being featured. The effect of this is to plain and
simply highlight what this magazine edition is going to be about its
alternative purpose is to draw attention which would explain why it is
the second largest text on the page.
Cover lines: The cover lines used are brief titles showing the content
of the magazine. Like the masthead the cover line have the same
theme of having a black strip and white bold text. The white and
black text ensures clarity is promoted throughout the magazine and
helps the magazine to put across its points. Again the cover lines are
slightly bigger than the writing underneath to stand out and be read
first.
Imagery and Positioning: The main image used for the contents
page is a large picture of the featured band placed in the centre left of
the page. The reason behind its positioning is to ensure it is the
centre of attention and to briefly exclaim what the page is going to be
Mise En Scene: Costuming: The costuming used in the image is Inblack fishthe picture is also conjunction with matches theskinny

jeans, both items of clothing are very popular in indie rock culture and have purposely been chosen to ensure the indie theme is
pages colours theme.
present in their performance.
Props: The guitar and microphone used in the image are essential props for creating a ‘rock and roll’ vibe as guitars are symbolic to
rock culture.
Positioning: Already covered
Lighting: The use of low key lighting has most likely been used to create atmosphere and mood in the live performance. There is
however some sort of dim lighting being shun upon the band, perhaps being used to create stage presents and to ensure the band
stand out.
3

Masthead: The masthead used for the contents page of Kerrang is
a yellow acid wash title stating ‘content’ on the top left corner of
the magazine. Beneath it has further text stating the issue number
of the magazine however this time in a white acid wash font. Aa
expeced the masthead is the biggest size tect on the page and is
used to statue what type of page the reader is on.
Main Cover line: The main cover lines used for the Kerrang
contents pages is actually just text stating the name of the
magazine and the new ‘weekly’ updates in the music industry.
Again the colour theme remains a contrasting white and yellow and
has some form of wash over it.
Cover lines: The cover lines used are brief titles showing the
content of the magazine. Like the masthead the cover line have the
same theme of yellow, white and black text. The white and black
text ensures clarity is promoted throughout the magazine and
helps the magazine to put across its points, whereas the yellows
purpose is to stand out and welcome to the reader into reading it.
Again the cover lines are slightly bigger than the writing
underneath to stand out and be read first.
Imagery and Positioning: The main image used for the contents
page is a large picture at the top of the page advertising the
featured band, which in this case is
Slash. The reason behind
its positioning is to ensure it is the centre of attention and the first
thing you see, in addition to briefly exclaim what the page is going
to be about. In addition the picture is also very low key and
matches the pages colours theme.

Mise En Scene: Costuming: The costuming used in the image is a black leather jacket worn in conjunction with some black
leather gloves, both items of clothing are very popular in indie rock culture and have purposely been chosen to ensure the
indie theme is present in their performance.
Props: Not applicable
Positioning: Already covered
Lighting: The use of low key lighting has most likely been used to create atmosphere and mood in the live performance.
There is however some sort of dim lighting being shun upon the band, perhaps being used to create stage presents and to
ensure the band stand out.
