The LIVE laboratory is developing an augmented reality system to improve the safety and efficiency of excavation work. The system tracks the movement of excavation equipment in real-time using tags and compares the depth and position to engineering plans. This allows the system to relay depth and grade information to the operator, reducing the need for interruptions to check measurements. An initial prototype mounted the tracking system to a rail attached to the equipment. However, the hazardous environment caused the system to become dislodged or damaged during operation. Researchers are redesigning the system to withstand the vibrations, impacts, and heat of excavation work so it can provide operators with accurate information to increase productivity while working safely.
