CAREER HISTORY & SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS
Perdue Farms, Inc., a US leader in poultry processing, 2006-2016. Roles include:
Director of Operations, 2011-2016. Promoted to lead all plant operations, including
production, safety, compliance, HR and training at Perdue’s HQ. Drove major productivity,
food safety, sustainability, profit improvement and cost control initiatives. Managed
multidisciplinary management and staff to 520 personnel and operating budgets to $42M.
Notable achievements include:
Drove $12M in annual plant cost savings. Perdue needed to rein in operating
expenses and increase profitability. Assembled a task force to attack plant costs.
Identified key expense drivers susceptible to being trimmed. Restructured
personnel resource allocation and scheduling and reduced overall labor needs.
Reengineered processes. Strengthened training, focusing on cross-functionality
and staff interchangeability. Installed new, high-efficiency, lower maintenance
capital equipment. Cut plant operation costs 4.7%.
Boosted yields 4.9%, adding millions to the bottom line. A new larger live-bird
profile at Perdue posed major processing challenges, including the threat of
shrinking yields. Launched an aggressive initiative to implement the new standards
without reducing throughput. Reengineered kill, stunning and kicking practices.
Streamlined care processes and reduced giveaway rates. Increased yields 3.5
points from 72% to 75%, adding $4M in profits while meeting the new bird profile
standards.
Established leadership in antibiotic-free & Green practices. As part of its Four
P’s program (People, Products, Profitability & Planet), tapped by Perdue to design
and implement new sustainable standards. Played a key role in creating processes
for antibiotic-free (ABF) production and a reduced waste footprint. Built and
brought on-line a new litter processing plant. Rolled out the programs ahead of
schedule and on budget. Contributed to the firm earning special recognition from
the State of Maryland for leadership in both fields. Positioned Perdue as a leader
in the No Antibiotics Ever (NAE) and corporate social responsibility movement.
Grew profits ten-fold with product diversification. Seeking ways to increase
profits and financial stability, Perdue needed to overcome volatile market
fluctuations. Directed a team tasked with changing the product mix. Conducted
market research. Developed, market tested and rolled out several new high-margin
products such as marinated chicken. Leveraged the new value-added products to
boost profits from $3M to $32M in the first two years.
Saved millions in a rightsizing. Perdue needed to trim excessive and rising labor
costs. Conducted studies of manpower needs across all departments, identifying
fat. Drawing on Lean practices, recalibrated staffing levels, reengineered
processes and streamlined systems to eliminate 47 full time equivalent positions.
Saved $1.6M in payroll costs first year alone while maintaining or increasing
productivity and quality.
Slashed turnover by 23%, cutting training costs. High rates of attrition at
Perdue elevated recruiting and training costs and impeded productivity
improvements. To counter plant-level issues, as part of a larger $60M enterprise
wide initiative, designed and implemented aggressive associate engagement and

management training programs. Met all targets, boosting retention rates by 12
points, saving $250K in training costs at a single plant.
Sr. Business Unit Lead, 2006-2011. Recruited to manage a key business unit. Directed
process, efficiency, productivity, training and product mix improvement programs.
Plant Manager, Allen Family Foods, 1992-2006. Directed production and operations, managing
budgets to $60M and leading 640+ management and other staff at poultry plants in Hurlock, MD
and Harbeson, DE. Key contributions include:
Accelerated productivity 7.6%, boosting profits by millions. Chain speed at
Allen Family Foods failed to keep pace with planned product runs schedules.
Leading a comprehensive productivity improvement initiative, reengineered capital
equipment, plant layout, processes, schedule and training. Ramped up chain
speed from 92 to 99% of capacity, contributing to a $10M first-year jump in profits.
Ramped up throughput 24%+. Looking to increase productivity and efficiency,
Allen Family foods wanted to expedite inspection processes. Directed
implementation of New Line Speed (NELS) processes, systems, workflows and
plant layouts, as well as improved training. Instituted strict new QA/QC processes.
Elevated productivity from 73 to 91 birds per minute with no decline in quality or
safety.
Strengthened accountability & processes, adding millions in profits. Allen
needed to increase plant yield, which fell below established Agristats industry
norms. Conducted extensive operations studies to identify root causes of poor
productivity. Designed and implemented improvements across all departments.
Instituted new performance metrics and statistical process controls with strict
accountability. Increased yields by 2% while simultaneously reducing plant
operating costs to drive a $2.5M jump in bottom line profits.
Earlier: Plant Manager, Townsend, Inc. Led operations at a plant in Jacksonville, FL, managing
up to 380 management and other personnel. Accomplishments include:
Generated a $15M P&L swing in a plant turnaround. Tasked with reversing the
tide of red ink at a newly acquired Townsend plant that was operating at a $10M+
annual loss. Redesigned the plant. Brought in new capital equipment. Working
closely with sales and marketing, revamped the product mix. Revamped staffing
and training, replacing deadwood where necessary with fresh talent. Generated
