The Internet of Things is about data, not things. Some forecasts that by 2018 the number of connect things will exceed the combined number of personal computers, smartphones, and tablets. Each ’thing’ can produce a tremendous stream of data from sensors and other sources. This presentation will discuss progress, examples, challenges, and opportunities with machine learning for the IoT. A short presentation will be done on some recent applications of ML (using H2O) to the domains of machine prognostics / health management (PHM) and agriculture. Presented by Hank Roark, Data Scientist / Hacker at
H2O.ai.
Wesley Booth is an Acadia University business student who is working on a research project how predictive analytics can be used in the agriculture industry and how this relates to precision agriculture and farmers here in Kings County. The example outlined in the presentation is using predictive analytics to improve apple scab detection and management.

COMMUNICATION & KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT Malawi presentation for Implementation Completion Report. for the Agriculture Productivity Program for Southern Africa - APPSA
The Goethe-Institut and the National Museums of Kenya organised a Post-SCECSAL-Conference on ‘LIBRARIES AS COMMUNITY MEMORY’ in Nairobi, Kenya. The purpose of this workshop was to explore ways in which African libraries – through various initiatives – can play an active role in collecting, processing, disseminating acting as repositories of indigenous knowledge. This was in cognisance of the fact that most of the cultures on the African continent are largely oral-based and information that would be useful for posterity is not documented in written form. The eThekwini Municipality’s Ulwazi Programme will be used as the case study.
While librarians are not necessarily the ones who would be expected to go out into the field to collect this information, they need to work closely with community field workers, who must be trained on how to gather information and present it to the librarians for processing and dissemination. The documentation/dissemination can be in different forms: book, CD-ROM, website, brochure, or a combination of two or more of these. The basic approaches in dealing with this phenomenon are numerous and we hope that the workshop can identify the most practical, sustainable and cost-effective approaches.
Presented by Chris Higgins at the Co-Design Workshop, Machynlleth, 16 October 2014. Half-way through a 4-year project to enable "citizen scientists" to use smartphones to upload crucial scientific data, this presentation shows the current state of progress on the COBWEB project.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Danish Agricultural Advisory Service
• Owned by farmers – used by farmers
• 35 local agricultural advisory centres and 1
national centre
• Turnover: 240 mill. €
• 3.500 employees
• Denmark's largest
consultancy
• 50.000 farmers
Danish Agricultural Advisory Service

3. • 2007-2008 project
• Goal was to develop a number of digital
based prototypes, supporting m-learning in
the workplace with farmers and farm
employees as the target group.
•
Definition of M-learning
• Learning that is facilitated and enhanced by
the use of digital mobile devices, which can
be carried and used anywhere and anytime.
Danish Agricultural Advisory Service
National Centre
4. • Potential
Content should not be a problem. An
organization providing m-learning must have
a steady production of content (created in
advance) for other media.
Authoring tools that can smooth out the
process of building and administrating
learning objects.
• Barriers
• Bringing learning objects within reach of the
farmer.
Danish Agricultural Advisory Service
National Centre
5. Conclusion
• Wait for WiMax and Android
Danish Agricultural Advisory Service
National Centre
6. Farmers don’t have time for
learning
- they are busy working and solving problems
Danish Agricultural Advisory Service
National Centre
12. Use of mobile devices
• 99 % of farmers use a mobile phone,
• 96 % read and 73 % write SMS messages,
• 73 % would like to be able to get a local weather
forecast on their mobile phone – 2 % do this on a
regular basis,
• 63 % expressed interest in receiving news,
• 55 % expressed interest in receiving market
information,
• 17 % have a PDA but one out of three of these are
not used because of problems with usability and lack
of sturdiness.

13. Learning styles
• Theorists like to understand the theory behind
the actions.
• Reflectors learn by observing and thinking
about what happened.
• Activists are those people who learn by doing
• Pragmatists need to be able to see how to put
the learning into practice in the real world
Danish Agricultural Advisory Service

14. • Learning objects
• Discrete elements of learning content that meet a
defined learning objective, and are possibly
independently assessable, which may take the form
of text, graphics, video, stills, animations, diagrams
audio.
•
Learning context
• Situated learning, there the mental representation of a
concept occurs not in an abstract or isolated form, but
in connection with the social and material context of a
specific learning situation.

15. • Bluetongue FAQ
• Danish authorities implemented a number of measures
including restriction zones and a vaccination campaign
including more than 1.5 million animals.
Danish Agricultural Advisory Service

16. • The castration of piglets
• A general introduction to the subject followed by a 2 minute video
explaining how and why. To check that the employee
understands, the video is followed by a multiple choice test with 4-6
choices per question and one or several correct answers

17. • Weed recognition
• As a farmer, if you see weeds in their full
grown stage, it is often an indication that you
didn’t notice that weed as a seedling and
therefore did not choose the right preventive
spraying.
• In this small game, the user shall match a
picture of some weed in their full grown stage
with a picture of the weed as seedling.
