Mildred and I spent the rest of the morning reading. I
asked Mildred about what made Clarisse do unique and
different. She did not reply, going on about how she did
not want to talk about dead people and how she liked
the people in her “family” better. I still cannot get
Mildred to be on the same page as me, on the same page
about books. I even asked her if her “family” loved here.
She dismissed the question.
3. Most of the books I could not understand. I’m starting to
doubt myself. How are books supposed to help?
Everything was really confusing. I had to sit down for a
while before I thought about the time I met Faber in the
park. Didn’t he know about books? We’ll I called him to
see what he could tell me. Faber still does not trust me
very much and hung up right away. I really need him to
help me understand these books! It’s driving me crazy, I
need help. Gosh, I’m so conflicted. Anyways, I’m off to
Faber’s house so he could realize that I really want him
to tell me about books.

I took the Subway to Faber’s house since it was not too
far. I tried memorizing lines of the Bible but the
Denham’s Dentifrice jingle could not let me concentrate.
Next thing I knew I was screaming at the radio where it
came out. I don’t know what happened. It’s just that the
noises coming out of the radio could not let me think.
5. Nonetheless, I made it to Faber’s house. Took me a while
to convince him that I’m really here to talk about books.
Quite a cautious old fellow he is. Once I got in, I showed
him the books I had. He then begins telling me
everything. He talks about why books were banned,
what they brought to society and just continued on and
on about the magic of books. Really helped clear things
up. I began to understand what these books were saying.
I really wanted to share this with everyone. I wanted
everyone to know about this! I needed to do something!
I suggested to Faber that we put books in all the
Firemen’s houses and get them to read books. Faber
dismissed the idea and told me to wait until the war was
over before we act. Anyways, Faber gave me an earpiece
so we could talk to each other. I’m currently on the
subway on my way home.

I got home and saw Mildred’s friends were already here.
Of course, they were sitting in the parlor watching the
TV walls. I thought I would try something and turned
off the TV as I tried to get them to talk. I wanted to see
how they acted. How they were different. How they
were ignorant. It was quite awkward at first, but I
managed to get them to talk about their families and the
recent presidential election. However, they talked about
how they did not care much about their families and
how they voted for the president based on his looks.
Boy, that got me mad. I could not understand why and
how a human could think that way. Faber was right
about how much the banning of books has affected us.
8. I could not stand it. I brought out a poetry book. Mildred
and Faber (through the ear piece) were both really mad. I
did not care. I had to show them the truth. I read them
Dover Beach. Mrs. Phelps started crying. Mrs. Bowles
continues by saying poetry is evil by making people sad
and miserable. Try as I might, I could not get them to
understand. Maybe I was wrong about this society;
maybe it is good to focus only on pleasure. Maybe they
were right about banning books and preventing people
from coming into to contact with thought and other
emotions. Anyways, I’m off the to fire station. I have to
confront Beatty. Good thing I have Faber with me.
