Her friends, are suggested to be more outgoing and
different from others. The emphasis on each
syllable is on friends, walk and run.
Skinny dip connotes a mischievous atmosphere.
The rabbit hole is a reference to Alice and
Wonderland. This play on the lyrics, suggests a
contrast between the childhood story and an
adult twist.
This is the first reference to drug taking that the
lyrics have put forward. The helium part, makes
me think of the high frequency that the voice becomes
etc. So maybe when portraying this image I could
Use a distortion of some sort to show this.
“Poppin’ Poppin’
balloons with
guns”
There is a clear emphasis
on the onomatopoeic word
‘pop’. Again, there is a form
of juxtaposition in the
lyrics, balloons connotes a
sort of children's party.
Whereas the reference to
the gun suggests another
adult way to ruin
childhood.
“We paint white roses red”
Again, another reference to Alice and Wonderland. However, in
this context it comes across as a rebellious sign instead.
“Each shade from a different persons head”
Suggesting from the persons blood, giving the whole context
and eerie message.
“This dream, dream is
a killer”
“Getting drunk with a
blue caterpillar”
The dream she is referring is her as
Alice and wonderland being her
dream. Dream also suggests that it
isn’t a nightmare, suggesting
secretly that she loves it. She will
want to continue in her alternate
reality.
Again, there is a juxtaposition
between childhood stories and
adult reality. The caterpillar is an
intertextual reference to the
film/book Alice and Wonderland.
The word drunk stand out for
obvious reasons, so potentially this
could be signified using special
effects or lighting to show the
intoxication.
“I’m peeling the skin off my
face”
This is rather coded, and can be two
different things. It may mean that she is
having a worrying high off a particular drug
and actually is peeling skin off her face. Or it
could resemble a mask, that she is no longer
afraid of taking off. Her mask is what she
thinks people want to see, and herself being
crazy is what’s hiding underneath. Emphasis
is on the peeling, which again has long vowel
sounds. This must be an emphasis in my
video.
“Cause I really hate being
sane”
This is backing up my point about a mask,
she’s saying she hates to feel and act as
though she were normal. The obvious image
you get from this statement is a mental
patient. This is almost a torment for her.
“The normals refer to everyone
else in society. The social ‘norm’,
the idea that they scare this girl
suggests she feels like she doesn’t
fit it. Afraid also connotes that she
is powerless, it is also more
sensitive than scared. Creating an
actual sense of sympathy when
looking into the lyrics.
By saying this, there is a paradox.
By intending to say that normal
people scare her so she mingles
with other misfits that then
becomes normal.
The word ‘crazies’ doesn’t depict
good thoughts, it suggests a group
of social outcasts with very strange
appearances and attitudes.
“I’m nuts, baby I’m mad”
Almost like a self diagnosis, she admits that
she isn’t normal, which therefore conveys a
sense of addiction behind the statement. It
also shows a slight disregard for the
seriousness of psychosis. The term ‘nuts’ is
used, which shows the level of seriousness
is reduced. This is suggesting that she is the worst behaved out of all of her
friends. Showing the level of her craziness. The emphasis in this line
would be ‘you’ve’, because it can directly influence the audience,
therefore gratifying their needs.
“Tell the something
is wrong”
She’s saying that she needs to be diagnosed because she
feels as though she is actually mentally ill. It shows the
severity of her illness. This conveys emotions of concern.
That was back when she was pushing her
true self away, so her friends didn’t like her
for that. Now that she has accepted that she’s
crazy, her friends like her more. It could also
show that she is involved in the wrong crowd,
per say, and that the people she hangs out
with (that do drugs and get high) encourage
her to be crazy and do crazy things that might
not always be sensible, but now that there
are people that somewhat accept her, she’ll
do anything to prove that she’s crazy and that
its ok.
She is proud of herself, she doesn’t care what
people say or think about her. So she is saying
that her secret of being crazy, isn’t a big deal
anymore now she’s taken off her mask and now
she's just being who she really is.
Reference to a quote by Alice
herself:
“You’re entirely bonkers. But
I’ll tell you a secret. All the
best people are.”
also, this is possibly an
indication that she thinks
being crazy is fine / she is in
denial. She has convinced
herself that being crazy
is fine.
She so crazy she’s asking for a
prescription from the doctor,
but for some reason the
doctor doesn’t seem to see
anything wrong, the second
line is her explaining her
craziness. In this line, she may
be referring to her friend as
the doctor. Her friend doesn’t
seem to see anything wrong
with her, and Melanie is
trying to tell her friend that
she actually is crazy.
Alice is a normal girl who
when at a tea party with the
Mad Hatter thinks his ways are
strange and wrong for not
being like her. So Crybaby has
come to terms with not being
normal and is telling others
that they can stick to being
normal and she will do her
own thing.
This is also a sharp contrast to
the previous lines- the first
three lines try to convince the
doctor that Crybaby needs
medication, but she snaps
after the third, sinking into the
Alice in Wonderland delusion.

Lyric Analysis

  • 1.
  • 2. Her friends, are suggested to be more outgoing and different from others. The emphasis on each syllable is on friends, walk and run. Skinny dip connotes a mischievous atmosphere. The rabbit hole is a reference to Alice and Wonderland. This play on the lyrics, suggests a contrast between the childhood story and an adult twist. This is the first reference to drug taking that the lyrics have put forward. The helium part, makes me think of the high frequency that the voice becomes etc. So maybe when portraying this image I could Use a distortion of some sort to show this. “Poppin’ Poppin’ balloons with guns” There is a clear emphasis on the onomatopoeic word ‘pop’. Again, there is a form of juxtaposition in the lyrics, balloons connotes a sort of children's party. Whereas the reference to the gun suggests another adult way to ruin childhood. “We paint white roses red” Again, another reference to Alice and Wonderland. However, in this context it comes across as a rebellious sign instead. “Each shade from a different persons head” Suggesting from the persons blood, giving the whole context and eerie message.
  • 3. “This dream, dream is a killer” “Getting drunk with a blue caterpillar” The dream she is referring is her as Alice and wonderland being her dream. Dream also suggests that it isn’t a nightmare, suggesting secretly that she loves it. She will want to continue in her alternate reality. Again, there is a juxtaposition between childhood stories and adult reality. The caterpillar is an intertextual reference to the film/book Alice and Wonderland. The word drunk stand out for obvious reasons, so potentially this could be signified using special effects or lighting to show the intoxication.
  • 4. “I’m peeling the skin off my face” This is rather coded, and can be two different things. It may mean that she is having a worrying high off a particular drug and actually is peeling skin off her face. Or it could resemble a mask, that she is no longer afraid of taking off. Her mask is what she thinks people want to see, and herself being crazy is what’s hiding underneath. Emphasis is on the peeling, which again has long vowel sounds. This must be an emphasis in my video. “Cause I really hate being sane” This is backing up my point about a mask, she’s saying she hates to feel and act as though she were normal. The obvious image you get from this statement is a mental patient. This is almost a torment for her.
  • 5. “The normals refer to everyone else in society. The social ‘norm’, the idea that they scare this girl suggests she feels like she doesn’t fit it. Afraid also connotes that she is powerless, it is also more sensitive than scared. Creating an actual sense of sympathy when looking into the lyrics. By saying this, there is a paradox. By intending to say that normal people scare her so she mingles with other misfits that then becomes normal. The word ‘crazies’ doesn’t depict good thoughts, it suggests a group of social outcasts with very strange appearances and attitudes.
  • 6. “I’m nuts, baby I’m mad” Almost like a self diagnosis, she admits that she isn’t normal, which therefore conveys a sense of addiction behind the statement. It also shows a slight disregard for the seriousness of psychosis. The term ‘nuts’ is used, which shows the level of seriousness is reduced. This is suggesting that she is the worst behaved out of all of her friends. Showing the level of her craziness. The emphasis in this line would be ‘you’ve’, because it can directly influence the audience, therefore gratifying their needs. “Tell the something is wrong” She’s saying that she needs to be diagnosed because she feels as though she is actually mentally ill. It shows the severity of her illness. This conveys emotions of concern.
  • 7. That was back when she was pushing her true self away, so her friends didn’t like her for that. Now that she has accepted that she’s crazy, her friends like her more. It could also show that she is involved in the wrong crowd, per say, and that the people she hangs out with (that do drugs and get high) encourage her to be crazy and do crazy things that might not always be sensible, but now that there are people that somewhat accept her, she’ll do anything to prove that she’s crazy and that its ok. She is proud of herself, she doesn’t care what people say or think about her. So she is saying that her secret of being crazy, isn’t a big deal anymore now she’s taken off her mask and now she's just being who she really is.
  • 8. Reference to a quote by Alice herself: “You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.” also, this is possibly an indication that she thinks being crazy is fine / she is in denial. She has convinced herself that being crazy is fine.
  • 9. She so crazy she’s asking for a prescription from the doctor, but for some reason the doctor doesn’t seem to see anything wrong, the second line is her explaining her craziness. In this line, she may be referring to her friend as the doctor. Her friend doesn’t seem to see anything wrong with her, and Melanie is trying to tell her friend that she actually is crazy. Alice is a normal girl who when at a tea party with the Mad Hatter thinks his ways are strange and wrong for not being like her. So Crybaby has come to terms with not being normal and is telling others that they can stick to being normal and she will do her own thing. This is also a sharp contrast to the previous lines- the first three lines try to convince the doctor that Crybaby needs medication, but she snaps after the third, sinking into the Alice in Wonderland delusion.
