Lung abscess is a localized necrotic lesion in the lung parenchyma containing pus that forms a cavity. It is generally caused by aspiration of anaerobic bacteria. The most commonly affected areas are the lower lobes and upper lobes posteriorly. Lung abscesses are usually caused by aspiration of oral/gastric contents but can also be caused by septic emboli, necrotizing pneumonia, or underlying conditions like granulomatosis. Symptoms include cough with foul sputum, fever, chest pain, and shortness of breath.
