Welcome!!
Hello everyone and welcome to today’s lunch
and learn activity. Today, you’ll have the
opportunity to come together with your grade
level team, have lunch, and learn new ways to
increase your students’ learning experience by
incorporating technology.
Today’s session will be led by our instructional
coach, Mrs. Salas, who will continue to work
with us and support us as we explore ways to
implement technology into our classroom.
2
3
WHY INCORPORATE TECHNOLOGY?
Incorporating technology into our daily instruction
can be both empowering and overwhelming,
especially when it’s already something that you
don’t feel comfortable with. This year, it is my goal
to help support my teachers by demonstrating how
technology can enhance instruction by utilizing it to
create an interactive and creative classroom that
provides the students with innovative resources.
4
What can you expect to learn from today?
How to manage technology in the classroom when:
✓ Facilitating group activities
✓ Conducting research
✓ Communicating Final Projects
By the end of lunch, you will have gained much more reassurance in
how technology can be used, in simple and easy ways, in order to
enhance and transform traditional learning as we strive to support
our 21st century learners and meet the requirements of our NC State
Standards.
5
FACILITATING GROUP ACTIVITIES
Classroom scenario:
For Social Studies, students will be placed in small groups of 4. Each group
will be tasked with creating a news report video illustrating the current
event their group was assigned utilizing the program FlipGrid.
How to manage technology while facilitating group activities:
Assign each student with detailed responsibilities
Example responsibility roles:
✓ Material Manager: Picks up, distributes, collects, turns in, or puts away
materials.
✓ Director: Keeps group on task and verifies that all members contribute
✓ Reporter: Takes notes on important thoughts expressed in the group
and writes the final summary.
✓ Editor: Checks for accuracy and clarity of thinking during discussions
and checks written work.
(Illinois
State Board of Education, n.d.)
6
CONDUCTING RESEARCH
There are 6 online research skills your students must know
prior to conducting research on the internet:
1. Check the sources
2. Ask good questions
3. Go beyond the surface
4. Be patient
5. Respect ownership
6. Use your networks
(Thomas, 2015)
7
COMMUNICATING FINAL PROJECTS
On your Google classroom, you can:
✓ Post due dates on the Google calendar where students will
be able to view it whenever they want and receive
reminders through the notification system.
✓ Instructions for final project can be posted on the Google
classroom for students reference.
✓ Grading rubric can be displayed on Google classroom
On the ClassDojo app:
✓ If parents are not able to view their child’s Google
classroom, they can access the ClassDojo app to receive
information on the final project and due date. They may
also ask questions if needed.
8
CONSIDERATIONS:
When it comes to technology, we can’t always predicate that things are
going to work out as we had hope had planned. For one, ensuring that
our students understand how to properly use the technology is important
in receiving accurate results. Two, we need to be comfortable with the
idea of being adaptable when technology resources are either not
enough, just enough, or in various forms. When we have an idea how to
adjust to different scenarios or situations, we’re better able to handle
ourselves and take control over the situation. To help illustrate, in the
upcoming slides, I’ll be providing some scenarios with possible solutions.
9
HOW TO MANAGE A
CLASSROOM WITH ONE COMPUTER
Solution: Connect your computer to an overhead projector or tv
This will allow you to be able to:
✓ Display creative presentations.
✓ Stream videos
○ Go on a virtual field trip to the African jungle so they can see
live images.
✓ Display animations, notes, pictures, etc.
✓ Display concept map
○ Fill in the bubbles during whole group discussion
10
HOW TO MANAGE A
MULTI-COMPUTER CLASSROOM
✓ Set up a designated area in your classroom for the computers.
✓ Inform students of your rules while in the computer area.
✓ Inform your students of the purpose of the computers and what
they’ll be used for. (group/individual assignments/research)
11
HOW TO MANAGE HANDHELD DEVICES
Examples of useful handheld devices:
✓ Calculators
○ Assist students with math
✓ Digital Camera
○ For projects, students can take photos of objects that will be
used for their project.
✓ Digital audio recorder
○ Students can record their voice to add extra media to their
presentations.
✓ E-book reader
○ Students can have access to e-textbooks if hard copies are
not available.
✓ Cell phones
○ Provides students with on-demand access to conduct
research during a class discussion.
12
HOW TO MANAGE iPADS, TABLETS,
OR LAPTOPS
✓ Independent or individual activities
✓ Whole Group activities
✓ Small Group activities
✓ Center activities
THANK YOU!!
Thank you for attending today’s lunch and learn
activity. I hope that the information shared with
you today provided you with a better
understanding for how to incorporate
technology into your classroom in easy and
simple ways. I will continue to follow up with
you all at our weekly PLC meetings. Thank you
and have a great day!

Editor's Notes

  1. Will it be possible to manage group activities? The answer is yes! But before we get ahead of ourselves we must keep in mind to limit the number of devices being used and create small diverse groups.
  2. Thomas (2015) suggests 6 skills for your students must know prior to conducting research on the internet. Check your resources: As a class, discuss how to evaluate a website. Identify if the website is up to date, how’s the security, does it provide in depth knowledge, and does it come from a trust source. Ask good questions Develop and refine search questions to get better research results Go beyond the surface Encourage students to pursue information to gain a broad perspective Be patient Encourage students that despite research challenges, to display an emotional resilience and continue to conduct their research. Respect ownership Inform the students the importance of respecting that the research found is not their work and to cite their sources to give them credit. Use your networks Social networks can be a great source of information and to share information.
  3. Having only 1 computer available may not be ideal but don’t let that discourage you from creating a meaningful and impactful lesson utilizing technology. Having 1 computer can make a big difference in supporting our diverse learners, especially those who are our visual and auditory learners. Here are some suggestions to consider if you only have 1 computer available.
  4. Having the option for each student to have access to a computer provides teachers with the ability to teach their students more information, enhance their learning experience with the help of various educational programs, and helps to keep the students engaged.
  5. Handheld devices provide support for subject content and help to deepen student knowledge while achieving a deeper level of learning. (Maloy, et. al., 2014)
  6. iPads, tablets, and laptops are great tools to have as they help support a diverse classroom as they serve to provide versatile learning opportunities. Here are some suggestions for incorporating these types of technology resources: During independent or individual activities students can get logged into ABCya.com which is an educational game program. Our young students can benefit from this website because it makes learning fun through the use of games. During whole group activities, teachers can use these devices to have students follow along with a text, have an individual copy of the PowerPoint presentation to follow along to, or participate in a quick Kahoot quiz. During small group activities, students can utilize these devices to access their iStation learning portal to help the teacher and students identify what needs to be reviewed during their small group session. During center activities, these devices can be used to help students complete tasks that are appointed to them at each station.
